For the 17th year in a row, Bills Daily tries to predict who the Bills will draft. Obviously these are just our best guesses along with some wishful thinking and we give you alternate picks in the early rounds if the players they want are gone already. This is a tough job to begin with made tougher by the fact the Bills don't have a first round pick this year thanks to the Sammy Watkins deal. | 1-19 ( #19 overall) | DT Jarran Reed - Alabama The Bills need to use this pick on a front seven guy specifically luckily the draft is very deep at these spots. The problem is the guys that are the best fits likely will be gone leaving the Bills to draft a talented player who may not fit as well as they like or they may trade down to get better value later in the round and pick up extra picks to fill more holes. Reed is a solid run stuffing tackle who could be plugged in on run downs in between Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams. A nice fit but doesn't have the versatility to be a three down player. Other possibilities here include DE Shaq Lawson of Rex Ryan favorite Clemson. He is a solid pass rusher but may not fit the 3-4 very well. Alabama's ILK Reggie Ragland also fills a need but he's too similar to Preston Brown, they need a more versatile middle backer who can drop into coverage. LB Darron Lee of Ohio St. is a very good fit but likely won't get past Atlanta at 17. | |
| 2-18 ( #49 overall) | QB Christian Hackenberg - Penn St. This may be the place that we see the Pegula-Penn St. connection comes in to play. The Pegulas know Hackenberg as well as anyone and rumors say the Bills are very high on him. He was awesome under Bill O'Brien his first two years at Penn St. but really struggled the past two years. Maybe with proper coaching he can fulfill his potential. He won't have to play right away. They have basically said they will draft a QB if not Hackenberg look for them to pull the trigger on another project passer later in the draft and use this pick on one of the two WRs from Ohio St. Michael Thomas or Braxton Miller. | |
| 3-17 ( #80 overall) | ILB Nick Kwiatkoski - West Virginia He is a three down inside backer who moves well laterally and has some good quickness. Should fill the role vacated by Nigel Bradham very well and has a chance to start as a rookie next to Preston Brown. If they don't take Hackenberg they may pull the trigger on Cardale Jones of Ohio State here. S Su'a Cravens of USC maybe a good fit here too he can be a hybrid safety/linebacker for Rex Ryan. | |
| 4-19 (#117 overall) | WR Charone Peake - Clemson Rex Ryan's affinity for Clemson players may come into play here. The Bills need more talent at wide receiver, specifically tall receivers. Peake is over 6'2" and has the speed of a smaller player. Could be an intriguing project. | |
| 4-41 (#139 overall) | OT Caleb Benenoch - UCLA The Bills are likely to take an offensive tackle at some point. Benenoch is good value in the fourth round. He has a mean streak which Rex Ryan loves and may be able to develop into a solid right tackle with time and coaching. | |
| 5-18 (#156 overall) | S Jayron Kearse - Clemson If the Bills still don't have their QB by this time, taking Stanford's Kevin Hogan may be the best bet with their fifth round pick. Assuming they take on earlier, the Ryan/Clemson connection could come into play here. Kearse is flexible enough to play either safety position something Ryan loves. They need some more depth at the position and Kearse may be able to compete for some playing time later in the year. | |
| 6-17 (#192 overall) | CB Kevon Seymour - USC The Bills take at least one corner every year and if they still haven't picked on by now this would be a good position to look for a diamond in the rough. Seymour has good size who is explosive and solid in coverage. He is raw, like anyone picked in the 6th round would be, and will require some coaching but has a chance at a future spot on the roster. | |
| 6-43 (#218 overall) | DE Ron Thompson - Syracuse Would project to an outside backer in the Bills 3-4 scheme. He has enough athleticism and experience to make that adjustment. He's a good effort player that they may want to take a flyer on at a position that is weak in depth. | |
