Bills Blow Out Chiefs 35-17
Bills make statement of their own in home opening win.

Gameday Grades
The Skinny:
The Bills bounced back nicely from the opening day loss at the Meadowlands to blow out the Chiefs 35-17 at the home opener at Ralph Wilson Stadium. C.J. Spiller ran for two scores and 123 yards on just 15 carries. He also had three receptions for 47 yards including a 27 yarder that setup a score. Ryan Fitzpatrick played mostly error free ball as he hit on 10 of 19 passes for 178 yards including a 10 yard touchdown pass to Scott Chandler just before halftime and a 49 yard catch and run for a score by Stevie Johnson. Leodis McKelvin added an 88 yard punt return for a score to give the Bills an insurmountable 35-3 lead before the Chiefs scored two late touchdowns. Nick Barnett forced a fumble that was recovered by Bryan Scott and Alex Carrington forced a fumble that was recovered by Mario Williams. The Bills defense had five sacks including two by Kyle Williams and one each by Marcell Dareus and Kelvin Sheppard.

The Turning Point:
There really wasn't one play that turned this game around since the Bills dominated from the beginning. We would choose Carrington's sack that was recovered by Mario Williams with the score still 14-0. That play allowed the Bills to put the game away before halftime.

The Big Drive:
The 11 play, 84 yard drive to Spiller's 17 yard touchdown run that gave the Bills a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The drive set the tone for the entire game. Fitz hit Spiller for a 19 yard catch and run and then ran for 20 yards himself on third and four to setup Spiller's score.

Stat I Did Like:
Turnover Ratio: The Bills were +3 in this category as Mark Cassell through one interceptions and the Chiefs lost two fumbles while the Bills didn't turn the ball over.

Stat I Didn't Like:
This is nitpicking but I didn't like that the Chiefs had 422 total yards offensively.

Quick Slants:
- The Bills announced the defense first and instead of making Mario Williams the final player introduced they showed class and introduced Dareus last.
- I guessed easily before the game that the Chiefs would start the game with the ball and 1st and 10 from the 20. I figured whoever won the toss would choose for the Chiefs to have the ball first and I figured on a touchback from John Potter.
- The soldout crowd was on its feet the entire game.
- Spiller is the class of the NFL after two weeks. If he continues this pace it will be hard for Fred Jackson to regain his starting job.

My Take:
The Jets made a statement in the opener and dominated the Bills. The NFL changes rapidly from week to week so it was nice to see the Bills make a statement in week 2 by dominating the Chiefs and end the doom and gloom talk for at least one week.

What's Ahead:
The Bills head to Cleveland to battle the Browns who are winless after two games.

  • C.J. Spiller - He had 170 total yards offensively and two scores. He has come in to his own.
  • Kyle Williams - Had two sacks and led a spirited defensive effort.
  • Marcell Dareus - Played with a heavy heart and had a sack.

  • Goats
  • None - Great team effort.

  • Player Of The Week
  • C.J. Spiller - gets the award for the second straight week. May not give back the starting job.
