Bills Crush Bengals 33-20
by Steve Saslow
December 7, 1998

Eric Moulds has officially arrived. In the last two games Moulds has caught 14 passes for a whopping 373 yards and three touchdowns including two against the Bengals in the Bills 33-20 rout. The big play was a nifty catch and run with the Bills trailing 13-10 late in the first half. Moulds ran a slant pattern, broke four tackles and then pulled away from the defenders on his way to a 70 yard touchdown to give the Bills a lead they would never relinquish.

Doug Flutie had an up and down day, he used the short passes well and mixed in an occasional long pass on his way to his second straight 300 yard game. On the downside Flutie threw three interceptions that led to two Cincinnati touchdowns. Andre Reed had a big day catching 7 passes mostly in the slot as the Bills took advantage of the secondary blitzes that the young Bengals defense threw at Flutie.

The Bills came out like gangbusters looking to take out last week's frustrations on the poor Bengals. The Flutie to Moulds day got off to a quick start with a 55 yard bomb on the opening play from scrimmage that set up Antowain Smith's one yard touchdown run three plays later. The Bills kept up the intensity on their next possession after a three and out series by the Bengals. A nine play drive for a field goal was highlighted by a 23 yard run by Flutie where he refused to slide down as he smelled the end zone but was tackled 8 yards short. The first of four Steve Christie field goals gave the Bills a quick 10-0 lead less than 7 minutes into the game.

The Intensity seemed to drop after that and a poor decision by Flutie got the Bengals back into the game when he threw across his body on the run looking for Smith of all people and was picked off which set up a Darnay Scott touchdown to pull the Bengals within 4. The Bengals had the momentum and marched down the field with their next possession for a controversial touchdown reception by Carl Pickens. Pickens was juggling the ball as he came down in the end zone and then dropped it, but the refs ruled he came down with it for six. After Moulds' 70 yarder gave the Bills the lead back the defense clamped down and gave the Offense a chance to tack on a 52 yard FG as time ran out in the first half giving the Bills a 20-13 lead.

The third quarter consisted of two more Christie FGs as he enjoyed the warm december weather for a change. The defense also began to tee off on the Bengals QBs putting alot of pressure on Neil O'Donnell and Jeff Blake. The fourth quarter was much of the same with the defense dominating and Flutie and Moulds hooking up one more time. Flutie did some excellent scrambling and found Moulds for a 30 yard touchdown pass. There was nobody within 15 yards of him as he caught it and walked it in for the score that gave the Bills an insurmountable 33-13 lead. The defense took over getting most of their 6 sacks in the quarter including three by backup nose tackle Pat Williams who was all over the field after coming in for a banged up Ted Washington. The Bengals final score came after Flutie threw his third interception of the game setting up Corey Dillon's garbage score.

My Take:

  • The Bills didn't play that well but they did what they needed to do against a weak opponent to win rather easily. What's impressive is that they stayed focused despite the roller coaster week they had off the field from the Pats game to the Lease to Wilson vs. Tagliabue, to Perry's tragic car accident. Credit has to be given to Coach Wade Phillips who had done a fantastic job keeping this team together through adversity. The players deserve the credit too, as they have proven over and over again how resilient the franchise really is.

  • Owner Ralph Wilson received a game ball from the players who showed how much respect and admiration they have for their owner. They showed their appreciation for his sticking up for the team against the Commissioner. Wilson's reaction to the ridiculous fine has earned him high praise around the league and more importantly from his players who may have played a little harder for him.

  • With Doug Flutie "you live by the sword or die by the sword." The same way he makes those magical plays, including the 30 yard touchdown to Moulds in the fourth quarter, he throws a few bad interceptions like the one that set up Cincinnati's first touchdown.

  • What was surprising in the Bills 448 yards of total offense was the fact that they had more success in the air then on the ground against the worst run defense in the league. Antowain Smith rushed for 77 yards but 28 of those came on the final touchdown drive.

  • One more thing....Is Lonnie Johnson still on the team???!!
