Bills Run To Victory by Steve Saslow November 16, 1998 The Bills used a potent running attack and some big defensive stops to overcome many mistakes in their 13-10 win over the Patriots. Antowain Smith ran for 88 yards and Thurman Thomas chipped in with 76 yards on just 11 carries to lead the way for Buffalo. Doug Flutie seemed to move the team at will completing big third passes and running for 49 yards of his own. Three turnovers hurt the Bills including Flutie's two interceptions in the end zone. After Flutie's second interception Bruce Smith had two sacks forcing New England into a three and out series. A questionable play call by Phillips on the Bills next possession could've been deadly. With just under three minutes to go and the Bills facing a 4th and 4 at the Pats 27 yard line, Phillips decided to go for it instead of kicking the 44 yard FG that could have given the Bills a 6 point lead. Flutie's pass to Andre Reed was incomplete. But the Bills defense came up big after a couple of First downs, Drew Bledsoe's 4th down pass fell incomplete icing the the big division win.
