Is this a different Flutie we're going to see? by Rick Serafin October 20, 2000 While the Buffalo Range and Buffalo Bills Insider upgrade their server, we are printing some of their articles here on Bills Daily. Here's one from Buffalo Range webmaster Rick Serafin. Doug Flutie isn't adding any fuel to the Rob Johnson vs Flutie fire this week. In Wednesday's press conference, Doug admitted he was excited about starting this week vs the Vikings, but he also made it clear that he is only Johnson's backup. "I'm the backup," he said. "That's the way it is." This is a different stance then when Doug told the media that he should have been the starter entering the playoffs against the Titans last season. Flutie's play last season was average, but he did create a following of die hard fans stretching from the southern tip of Western New York to the far reaches of the great white north in Canada. The fans are hoping for a sequel to the '98 season when Doug replaced an injured Rob Johnson and led the team to the playoffs. He was also instrumental in keeping the Bills franchise in WNY. The bottom line here is, Doug just wants to win. He will support Johnson as he has done all year thus far, or he will take the ball and hope there's still some magic left in that right arm of his. "It's a lot more fun to be out on the field throwing the football than to be standing on the sideline cheerleading," he said. "I'm just going to go out and try to win a game or two. If it's two weeks, it's two weeks. If it's three or four, it's three or four. And when Rob gets healthy, he's the starter." Gameday Main Page Articles Index Back to Bills Daily Homepage |
