Bills Knock Off Jets 21-12
Opening day win leaves the Bills in first place.
by Steve Saslow
at
Week 1
Jets  12
Bills  21
The Skinny:
Tyrod Taylor threw touchdown passes to Charles Clay and Andre Holmes from one yard out while Mike Tolbert had a one yard plunge to lead the Bills to a 21-12 victory over the Jets. The win temporarily puts the Bills in sole possession of first place in the AFC East. LeSean McCoy ran for 110 yards on 22 carries and added 49 yards on five receptions in the win.

The Big Drive:
The six play, 64 yard drive to Taylor's touchdown pass to Holmes in the third quarter. It gave the Bills an eight point lead.

Stat I Did Like:
Yards Rushing Given Up: They only gave up 38 yards on the ground in the win.

Stat I Didn't Like:
Penalties: They had six for 50 yards. Could have been worse but could be better.

Scene Setters:
- The team honored the greatest comeback in NFL history during a halftime ceremony.
- Part of honoring that great moment in the 1992 wildcard game was having Steve Christie and Pete Metzelaars lead the charge before the game.

Key Matchup Results:
The winners of the battles highlighted in our preview article:
RB LeSean McCoy vs. LB Darron Lee: Winner: McCoy. He had a big game it the win with 159 yards total offense.
LT Cordy Glenn vs. OLB Josh Martin: Winner: Glenn. He was solid all game but did get help from Dion Dawkins as they split time.
LB Preston Brown vs. RB Matt Forte: Winner: Brown. The Jets had nothing going on the ground..
CB Tre'Davious White vs. WR Jermaine Kearse: Winner: White.Kearse had seven catches for 59 yards but wasn't much of a factor.

Keys To The Game Results:
How the keys highlighted in our preview article turned out:
1. Move Taylor Around: Success! He moved around a lot more than he did in the preseason. He had 38 yards rushing on 8 carries.
2. Get Early Lead: Success! He led them to a touchdown and a 7-0 lead in the second quarter.
3. Play Disciplined Football: Success! They could have done better but they were disciplined enough.

My Take:
A win that puts them in sole possession of first place is nice but it was against the worst team in the league. Things will get tougher and it starts next week.

What's Ahead:
The Bills go on the road for the first time as Sean McDermott and Brandon Bean head home to Carolina and the Bills take on the Panthers in their home opener.

Gameballs
  • LeSean McCoy - The team's best player had a big game.
  • Jordan Poyer - He was solid and had a nice interception and a sack as well.
  • Ramon Humber - He led the way with 13 tackles.

  • Goats
  • None - Nice team win.

  • Player Of The Week
  • LeSean McCoy - He led the Bills to the win.

  • Positional Breakdown and Grades - No grades this week. They will return next week!
