Bills Lose Out On More Free Agents

A Look Back At Recent News: We are now deep into free agency and it is a good time to pause on this Sunday morning and look back at the recent events regarding the Buffalo Bills. Tony Bogyo is back after a nice well deserved lay off to look at the recent news in his own humorous way as his fictional buddy "Wally" returns in this give and take regarding the team. Complete Story

Saturday March 13, 2004

Teague Bonus Due Monday: The Bills have a decision to make this weekend regarding the future of Trey Teague. The starting center is due a $2 Million roster bonus on Monday. It seems to make more sense for the team to release him by Monday and save the cap money. There backup plan was free agent Chris Bober but he has signed a five year deal with Kansas City and cancelled a trip to Buffalo.

No Interest Williams: Updating an earlier report, the Bills apparently have not contacted free agent TE Roland Williams. It was reported earlier this week that the Bills had interest in the Rochester native but his agent said he has not heard from the Bills.

Friday March 12, 2004

Henson A Cowboy: Close the door on another possible QB of the future for the Bills. Drew Henson is now a member of the Dallas Cowboys. They sent a third round pick in next year's draft for the rights to Henson and signed him to an eight year contract that is voidable after the fourth year. The Bills were interested in Henson but found their contract demands unreasonable.

Vincent Decision Nears: Various reports say that Troy Vincent has narrowed his choices to three teams, Buffalo, Kansas City, and Cincinnati. A decision could come by the end of the weekend. Stay with Bills Daily for the latest developments on this situation and other free agent news.

More On Volek: The agent for free agent QB Billy Volek and the Bills have both denied a report that the Bills are sending Sam Wyche to Nashville to meet with Volek on Sunday. His agent confirmed the team spoke to Volek on Wednesday but no visit has been set. Volek has already received two offers from other teams and the Falcons have had them down to Atlanta twice already.

Bills Lose Another: The Bills have now lost their third unrestricted free agent as Sammy Morris has signed with division rival Miami. That leaves the team with a hole on special teams although they weren't suppose to bring back their captain anyway. That leaves three unrestricted free agents still on the market for the Bills.

Volek Visit Disputed: WNSA-FM said sources tell them that the report of the Bills heading to Nashville to meet with Billy Volek are false. They say the Bills have no plans to visit the free agent quarterback. It was reported in the Nashville Tennessean and the Buffalo News that a Bills contingent led by Sam Wyche was on their way to Nashville on Sunday.

Bills To Meet Volek: In an unusual free agent twist the Bills go to Tennessee to meet with Billy Volek instead of setting up a visit to Buffalo for the free agent quarterback. Volek thought it was important enough to travel and visit Atlanta, Green Bay, and Denver himself but the Bills have to travel to him. They will meet in Nashville on Sunday. Volek led the Titans to a 28-26 victory over the Bills in his only career start last season. The Falcons supposedly have strong interest in him and the Titans are also looking to re-sign him. QB coach Sam Wyche is suppose to be among the Bills contingent going to meet with Volek.

Vincent Talking To Seahawks: The Bills have competition for the services of Troy Vincent. The Seahawks reportedly have begun contract discussions with the free agent cornerback. The Bengals have an offer on the table for him and reportedly the Bills gave him a second offer this week as well. Vincent was in Kansas City this week but left without an offer and it appears they are no longer in the running for his services. If a bidding war develops that may leave the Bills high and dry at the position.

Smith To Browns; Bober To Visit Miami: Another free agent visitor has signed elsewhere. The Cleveland Browns have signed RB Terrelle Smith. He was in town on Monday along with CB David Macklin who then signed with Arizona. In other free agent news, the Bills await a visit from C Chris Bober. He is expected sometime this week. He also has a visit scheduled with Miami.

Bills Like Williams: WOKR-TV in Rochester is reporting that the Bills have begun preliminary negotiations with free agent TE Roland Williams. He was released by Tampa Bay and visited the Bills last off season as a free agent. He is a Rochester native and would probably like coming home.

Bills Lose Out On Macklin: One of the players the Bills brought in for a free agent visit has signed with another team. CB David Macklin agreed to a deal with the Arizona Cardinals. He visited the bills on Monday and then signed with Arizona. He was considered a backup option for the Bills if they can't get Troy Vincent. There is a report that the Bills made a second offer to the free agent corner from Philadelphia.

Morris Offered Deal: Sammy Morris was offered a deal by New England. He has also visted Miami and Cleveland. He should pick a new team soon. He is not in the Bills' plans for the 2004 season.

Metzelaars Back In NFL: Former Bill TE Pete Metzelaars is back in the NFL. He has been hired as the offensive quality control coach for the Indianapolis Colts. He is reunited with former Bills GM Bill Polian in his first job as a coach in the league.

Morris Visits Miami: Sammy Morris brings his free agent tour to Miami today. As we reported earlier, he has already visited Cleveland and New England. His agent accepts the fact that Morris will not be a primary back anywhere he goes but he is looking for more playing time in the backfield than he will get in Buffalo behind Travis Henry and Willis McGahee.

Bills Sincere About Vincent: The agent for free agent cornerback Troy Vincent said the Bills interest in his client is sincere. Buffalo and Cincinnati are vyeing for his services and Vincent is scheduled to be in Kansas City today. The Bills and Vincent's agent did speak last night. If a bidding war ensues for Vincent he may become to expensive for the Bills blood.

Bober In Later This Week: Free agent center Chris Bober is due in town later this week for a visit. He won't be in earlier because of a family funeral. He was in Kansas City yesterday and has had offers from his current team, the Giants, and the Bengals. He won't make any decisions until visiting Buffalo his agent says because of his tremendous respect for his former OL coach Jim McNally. If Bober does sign with the Bills it is unclear where he would play. He has experience at tackle, guard, and center. The Bills current center, Trey Teague has a $2 Million option bonus due later this month, because of that he may be a salary cap casualty before that bonus is due. Bober could step in as the starting center or play guard. Bober's agent said McNally is pushing hard to bring his client to Buffalo but admitted he doesn't know where he would fit in at this point.

Polk Visits Texans: Unrestricted free agent LB DaShon Polk is visited with the Houston Texans yesterday. The Bills have already lost two of their unrestricted free agents. Polk and Sammy Morris are now on their free agent tours and may leave the team as well. Polk will visit with the Jets today. He is a valuable special teams contributor but will go elsewhere for a chance at more playing time at linebacker. He is expected to weigh his options after today's visit.

Cincy Edge On Vincent? The Cincinnati Enquirer is reporting that the Bengals have the inside track on signing Troy Vincent. He is leaning towards Cincinnati because of his past relationship with defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. He was the defensive backs coach in Philadelphia from 1999 to 2002. The Bills may still be in the running for his services.

Two Visit Today: The Bills hosted two free agents today. David Macklin and Terrelle Smith are in town. Macklin is a four year pro, spending all four years in Indianapolis. He was their starting cornerback in 2001 and 2002. He only made four starts a year ago. He did pick off two passes in a playoff game against Denver this past year. Smith is a fullback who caught six passes last year and has spent his entire four year deal in New Orleans. He has started in 39 of his 59 career games.

Volek To Visit? The prize of the free agency crop at quarterback may be Titans backup Billy Volek. He is visiting Green Bay at this time and is setting up a visit to Denver. A Tennessee newspaper is reporting that the Bills are interested in bringing him in for a visit at some point but none has been scheduled at this time. The Titans would still like to keep Volek and are in negotiations with him, they are heavily strapped with cap concerns though. Volek was the man behind center when the Titans beat the Bills this past season 28-26. He played very well in that contest.
