Bills Make Big Splash With Owens Deal

Players Happy To Have T.O.: To a man all the Bills players interviewed about the signing of Terrell Owens were all for it and not concerned about his reputation. Lee Evans didn't seem upset that some catches may be going another way. He said, he's very excited and likes the move. "This is a great move. To play with a receiver, a player of his caliber is something I'm looking forward to." Donte Whitner said he's happy for all the fans and has been getting feedback of excitement from them (he's constantly interacting with fans on his facebook page). "I know what type of player he is and the type of attention he commands from when we played against him. I also know the type of player Lee Evans is. I'm excited for the whole offense." The man who will have to get along with Owens the most is young QB Trent Edwards. "I am really excited about the addition of Terrell Owens to our team," Edwards said. "We spoke earlier and both look forward to working hard this offseason. We share the common goal of winning football games. His ability and experience will add to our offense and the weapons we already have." Chris Kelsay was surprised saying that the team had other needs besides wide receiver but he's a great talent.

Mixed Feelings: Everyone has an opinion on the shocking signing of Terrell Owens. I have received many texts and phone calls asking me what I think. I hate to be wishy washy but my feelings are mixed. He has been known as a cancer in the locker room and when things go badly in a small market like Buffalo things can quickly get out of control. I struggle to think how Dick Jauron will keep Owens under control. Nevertheless it is a good move from a marketing standpoint alone. The team desperately needed to create a buzz from a lackluster offseason that began with the unhappy decision to keep Jauron and continued with a revolving door of unsuccessful free agent visits. You can't get more excitement than the Owens deal. It put the Bills back on the NFL map in one quick swoosh. It should put more fans in the seats as well so for a PR move it rivals only the Drew Bledsoe trade. Let's hope it ends better. On the field Owens will give the Bills a dynamic weapon opposite Lee Evans and makes the team much more explosive. I'm just afraid that explosiveness will also happen off the field.

Brandon Said Decision Was Easy: Russ Brandon was the only member of the Bills organization to address the media tonight. He spoke to the team's website after the press conference as well. Brandon flew down to Miami to speak with Terrell Owens when they made the decision to go for him. The entire offseason they have wanted to add a playmaker to the offense but never dreamed one of the greatest playmakers in the history of the game would become available. They spoke about out and decided it was an easy decision to go after him. Brandon and John Guy flew down to Miami to pick up Owens after negotiations began last night with his agent Drew Rosenhaus. They had a great visit and got the deal done. Owens spoke football with Dick Jauron and the offensive coaches this afternoon and he liked what he heard.

Owens Looking Forward To Opportunity: Terrell Owens spoke to the team's website after his signing. He said once the process began his agent found the Bills as a potential suitor and they were high on his list. He acknowledges that Buffalo is different but he is different. He says he's a passionate and loyal person and now that he's a Bill he will give them 181%. On Trent Edwards Owens said, the two men will help each other and will have an ear for each other. Everyday will be a growing process and he's looking forward to the opportunity. He feels he will handle the transition well and learn the offense without too much difficulty since he's used to learning new systems. He says he likes his chances in Buffalo and the way the league is each year anyone can win it. He sees tremendous upside for the team especially the way things started out last year. He hears there are a lot of enthusiastic young players on the team and he feels they can surprise some people. Owens said he's looking forward to being in Buffalo and he expects to change the minds of the skeptics. He told Buffalo to get their popcorn ready because things will get more exciting this year.

Ticket Office Open Tomorrow: The Bills announced that the ticket office will be open tomorrow from 9am-12pm as they try to capitalize on an anticipated wave of fan enthusiasm thanks to the Owens signing.

Owens Introduced: Terrell Owens was introduced as the newest member of the Bills at an evening press conference. Wearing a red Bills cap, Owens said he had left "America's Team" in Dallas to become a member of "North America's Team", a reference to the Bills playing in Toronto. The team did not announce terms of the agreement, but Owens' agent Drew Rosenhaus spoke on ESPN and said that it was a 1 year deal for $6.5 million, all of it guaranteed. $4 million was in signing bonus and the other $2.5 million will be paid out in salary. Rosenhaus said 3 or 4 other teams had expressed interest in his client but Owens wanted to come to Buffalo. The fact that he will make $800,000 more playing for Buffalo than playing in Dallas this year obviously helped the deal.

Owens a Bill: Both the NFL Network and ESPN are reporting that wide receiver Terrell Owens has agreed to a 1 year deal with the Buffalo Bills. The Bills have not made an official announcement, but they have called a press conference for 6:15. Stay with Bills Daily for further updates.

Bills Interested In T.O.? Pro Football Talk is reporting that the Bills may be interested in getting Terrell Owens as shocking as that seems. They followed up on an internet rumor and said that Dick Jauron is the one lobbying the front office to go after T.O. It would be even more surprising if it ever happened. Owens wants the ball and wants a quarterback who gets it to him. He likely would not want to share receiving duties with Lee Evans and probably doesn't think much of the city, the team, or Trent Edwards. In other words, it won't happen. What do you think? Take our poll on our homepage and let us know!

Jones Stays In Chi Town: The Bills lost out on another veteran free agent as Kevin Jones has re-signed with the Bears for a reported $3.5 Million over two years. Fox Sports reports that the Bills courted him heavily before losing out on him. This is a growing trend this offseason as the Bills continue to lose out on players that have visited One Bills Drive.

Two Visitors Today: The Bills hosted two more players today at One Bills Drive. Veteran DE Jason Babin and LB Mike Peterson was in town. Babin was a first round pick of the Texans in 2004 as an outside linebacker he built himself up and was moved to defensive end this pat year and he played against the Bills twice for two different teams as he started the year with the Seahawks and finished it with the Chiefs. He has 15 sacks in his six year career including two in 2008. Peterson is the third veteran linebacker in as many days to visit One Bills Drive. He played with the Colts his first four years in the league and has spent the past six years in Jacksonville. He played outside linebacker for the Colts but manned the middle for the Jags. He was benched for six games last year by Jack Del Rio.

Keiaho Likes City: Freddy Keiaho spoke to the media after his visit with the team today. He called Buffalo a green, clean, nice city and liked that it is close to Canada. He thinks the Bills really like him and they spoke to him about possibly playing the sam linebacker position. He feels the team will be fine whether he signs here or not. Like Cato June yesterday he said a lot of the terminology and scheme is the same as he is used to so the transition would be pretty easy. He was drafted as a sam linebacker but has played more mike and will linebacker. The Bills play their will linebacker in the sam position. He thinks the Bills are a talented football team that is on the upswing. Keiaho feels he can be a better football player and if he feels this coaching staff can do that it could be a good place for him.

Lynch Gets 3 Years Probation: To update our earlier report Marshawn Lynch received three years probation as he pleaded guilty to one of three misdemeanor charges and the other two misdemeanor charges were dropped. He pleaded guilty to carrying a firearm in a vehicle. The charge for carrying a loaded firearm and the one for carrying an unregistered firearm were dismissed. Along with the three years probation Lynch has to do 80 hours of community service by Sept. 1st. Lynch and his lawyer took swift action to get this case behind them unlike his hit and run last year. A suspension is likely from the commissioner's office. There is a good chance he can get up to a four game suspension as a repeat offender of the league's personal conduct policy.

LB Visits: There is a third visitor to One Bills Drive today as LB Freddie Keiaho is in town. He joins previously reported Kevin Jones and Joey Galloway as players in town today. Keiaho is a former third round pick of the Colts and he has started the past two seasons at weakside linebacker. The Colts defense is very similar to the Bills cover two defense. A player like Keiaho or Cato June, who visited yesterday, would presumably be able to step right in to the Bills linebacking corps alongside of Kawika Mitchell and Paul Posluszny. Keiaho finished second on the team in tackles last year with 114.

Lynch Pleads: Pro Football Talk is reporting that Marshawn Lynch has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges from the possession of a firearm from the incident last month in California. The PFT website has a statement e-mailed them from Lynch that states: "Today I pled guilty to a misdemeanor violation of having a firearm in a vehicle, I am embarrassed by my recent arrest and conviction. I deeply regret that I placed myself in this situation. I have made mistakes in the past. Although I have learned many lessons over recent years, I obviously have not learned enough. I apologize to my family, the Buffalo Bills organization, my teammates, the Buffalo community, and Commissioner Goodell. I have already learned from this recent mistake and am sincerely committed to being a more responsible citizen and better representative of the NFL. Now Lynch should expect a suspension from the NFL under the personal conduct policy.

Two More Visits: The Bills are hosting two veterans today as WR Joey Galloway and RB Kevin Jones are in town. Galloway was in New England yesterday and Jones was rumored to be coming to One Bills Drive for a visit yesterday. Jones has battled injuries throughout his career. He's a former first round pick of the Lions and was on the Bears last year. He only had 34 carries last season. The Bills are still looking for that third running back as insurance with Marshawn Lynch's status up in the air. They are still looking for a veteran #2 WR as well and that has brought the veteran Galloway to town. He has spent the last five years in Tampa Bay and was bothered by injuries much of last season. He has three 1,000 yard seasons in his career.

Greer Has Fond Memories: As Jabari Greer leaves for New Orleans he had some nice things to say about his time in Buffalo. He thanked the fans for the tremendous amount of support they gave him. He said Buffalo will always hold "a special place in his heart". He went on to say he had no remorse or regrets and appreciates everything that happened in Buffalo. His deal with the Saints is reportedly a four year deal worth around $23 Million according to the Buffalo News.

Wednesday March 4, 2009

June Feels He Would Fit In: Cato June called the Bills a great organization and knows the Tampa 2 scheme fits him well. He thinks this team is on the brink of being a championship team which is a great asset and a great way for him to continue his career if he signs with the Bills. He feels it would be an easy transition because the terminology is similar but it's all about fitting in with the players that are already in Buffalo. June had lots of success in Indianapolis and played with Tampa Bay last year. He was recently released. He would probably play the will linebacker spot in Buffalo. This was his first free agent visit.

Greer Heads To Sin City: Jabari Greer is now officially an ex-Bill. He has reportedly signed a deal to join the New Orleans Saints. His fate with the Bills was sealed when they signed Drayton Florence yesterday.

Bills Don't Get Coles: The Laveranues Coles saga is now over and as usual the Bills don't get their man. Coles has signed a four year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals worth a reported $28 Million. There were many unsubstantiated rumors that the Bills were offering a three year deal worth around $6 Million a year.

Chambers Re-Signing Official: The Bills made the re-signing of one of their own officially today. They announced that unrestricted free agent Kirk Chambers has re-signed with the team. We had reported last Thursday that he agreed to a deal but it now has been signed. Chambers could compete for a starting job at guard this year or stay as the main backup at the tackle position.

June, Foster Visiting: As reported yesterday LB Cato June is in town visiting with the Bills. The team confirmed he is in town and they also confirmed that RB DeShaun Foster is in town for a visit. The team continues to look at #3 RB options because of the possible suspension of Marshawn Lynch. RB Kevin Jones and LB Pat Thomas have also been rumored to be coming to town today but there is no confirmation at this point on their arrival.

Tuesday March 3, 2009

Bills Turn To LB: Now it appears the Bills are turning their attention to linebackers in the 2nd wave of free agency. PFT is reporting they will meet with two of them tomorrow as former Bucs and Colts LB Cato June and Chiefs LB Pat Thomas are reportedly making the trip. June is a perfect fit for the cover two and it was thought the Bills would go after him when he left Indy. Thomas had nine starts last year. It seems like tomorrow will be a very busy day at One Bills Drive as we reported earlier RB Kevin Jones is also suppose to visit.

Bills Sign Florence: The Bills have reportedly signed their third free agent of the offseason as Drayton Florence reportedly agreed to a two year, $6.6 Million contract with the team. He visited last Thursday and was interested in going back to San Diego. He started 38 games for the Chargers at cornerback from 2005 - 2007. He played for Jacksonville last year gaining eight starts. The move likely shuts the door on Jabari Greer returning. Florence likely moves into the nickel role but should battle Leodis McKelvin for the starting job. He will also face a challenge from Ashton Youboty for the nickel spot. Depth Chart.

Coles Leaves Cincy: Laveranues Coles remains on the market as he reportedly left Cincinnati without a deal. Rumors are swirling that the Bills have given some unknown deadline to sign with the team so he can't use the Bills as leverage to drive up his price for other teams. Other rumors say the Bills have been in contact with his agent since he left Cincinnati. None of these reports have been substantiated at this point. Either way this should come to an end sooner rather than later.

Jones To Visit Tomorrow: Pro Football Talk is reporting that the Bills will entertain free agent RB Kevin Jones tomorrow. He is a former first round pick of the Detroit Lions and played for the Bears last year. The Bills continue to look at their options at the position because of Marshawn Lynch's issues.

Bills Officially Re-Sign McIntyre: The Bills made it official by re-signing FB Corey McIntyre today. It was move that was reported on Thursday. This means the fullback will be kept in the offense this season. Front Office Page.

Greer Still Possible: It is somewhat of a surprise that Jabari Greer remains on the market. Some thought he would quickly be gobbled up at the $8 Million a year range. The first wave of free agency is over and Greer likely won't be getting that much money which puts the Bills back in the picture although they were never out of it completely. Greer has visited with Detroit and Tampa Bay and the Bills still reportedly have a decent offer on the table. If he doesn't get a good offer from the Lions or Bucs he may just end up coming back to the Bills. If that happens expect 2009 to be the last year of Terrence McGee's career as a Bill. He's a free agent after this season. If Greer does go elsewhere the Bills should try to lock up McGee this offseason.

Coles In Cincy: The Dolphins are out of the race for Laveranues Coles but a new horse is in the race as Coles is scheduled to visit with the Bengals today, a day after they lost T.J. Houshmandzadeh to the Seahawks. The Vikings were also in the hunt for T.J. and they might also enter the race for Coles. The Bills were seen as frontrunners before Houshmandzadeh signed with Seattle.

Monday March 2, 2009

Miami Not An Option For Coles? Several media reports say that Laveranues Coles will not be going to Miami as they are reportedly not interested in him. That may give the Bills the inside shot on getting him. The team seems interested in him and there doesn't seem to be other teams that interested right now as there aren't reports of other visits for him.

Listen To Us Tonight! I will be on Bills Fan Radio tonight at 9pm. Listen in and call with any questions about the Bills! Mike Hill from ESPN will also be on the program as well. I'll be following him.
