Bills Coaching Search Going Nowhere Fast

Harbaugh Latest To Turn Bills Down? CBS's Charley Casserly reported yesterday on NFL Today that the Bills offered the job to Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh and he turned it down. It's hard to think the Bills would offer anyone the job without an interview but if this is true (or if he turned down an interview request) than he is another in a long line of people that just think the Bills are too pathetic to coach.

Grimm Not Interested? Since the Bills did not interview Russ Grim this week they will be unable to interview him until after next week's conference championship games unless the Cardinals lose to the Saints today. It appears that Grimm isn't in a rush or very interested in interviewing for the Bills job. The Buffalo News reports that his close relationship with former head coach Mike Mularkey may be swaying him against interviewing for the job. He would just be another in a long line of coaches that don't want the job in Buffalo.

Bills Sign Three Futures: The Bills signed three players that were on their practice squad this year to future free agent contracts. This is a practice that happens with practice squad members that they want to put on the active roster since that squad doesn't exist in the offseason. They gave the deal to DTs Rashaad Duncan and Lonnie Harvey and OT Jason Watkins. All three players were added to the practice squad late in the year and they were all undrafted free agents this past fall.

Fewell To New York: Perry Fewell became the third member of the 2009 coaching staff to find a new job yesterday. He finally decided to take the job as the defensive coordinator of the Giants. He was holding out hope he would get the Bills head coaching job but apparently figured he would not get it. He is one of only two people that have interviewed for the position leaving Leslie Frazier as the favorite for the job at this point. What's your thoughts on the coaching search? Take our poll on the homepage and let us know.

Schottenheimer Went With Gut: Brian Schottenheimer talked to the media today and gave his reasons for turning down an interview with the Bills. He said he went with his gut and it wasn't about the Bills but it was about the Jets. He is very happy with the Jets and decided it was the best place for him at this time. He was very flattered by the Bills interest. He said he will listen to other jobs that come up but he probably will still stay in New York. He said he absolutely wants to be a head coach but it has to be the right situation at the right time and you can't put a price tag on happiness. So in one way he said it wasn't the Bills and in another way he indicated the Bills job was just the wrong head coaching job.

April In Philly: A second former Bills coach is off the market. Highly coveted special teams coach Bobby April has been hired by the Eagles. He had a great six year run in Buffalo and is regarded as perhaps the best special teams coach in the game.

Kugler Finds Job: The first member of the much maligned 2009 coaching staff has found a job. Sean Kugler has taken the same OL coaching job with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Kugler is well regarded for how he handled the series of injuries at the offensive line position as well as the release of Langston Walker and the trading of Jason Peters.

Final Goat Tally: We have tallied up our goats from each week of the 2009 season as we have done for the past several season. Terrell Owens led the way with seven goats while four other players had four each. Trent Edwards had no gameballs. Final Goat Tally.

Schottenheimer Says No: Brian Schottenheimer has reportedly turned down a chance to interview with the Bills. Adam Schefter reports he not only turned down an interview while the Jets are in the playoffs, he turned one down for after the Jets are eliminated as well. He has said he's very happy as the offensive coordinator of the Jets. Cardinals OL coach Russ Grimm is expected to interview at some point but the Bills continue to get turned down left and right.

Final Gameball Tally: We have tallied up our gameballs from each week of the 2009 season as we have done for the past several season. Fred Jackson led the way with six gameballs while five other players had four. Trent Edwards had no gameballs. Final Gameball Tally.

Bills Get Permission For Schottenhemier: Various reports say the Bills have been granted permission to speak with Brian Schottenhemier about the open coaching position. Both sides should meet sometime this week in New York. The Bills also have asked permission to speak to Russ Grimm as we reported yesterday but he's expected to turn down the request at this juncture. Ron Rivera is also expected to turn down any request to be interviewed until after the Chargers are out of the playoffs.

Bills Ask For Permission: The Bills have asked the Cardinals for permission to speak to Russ Grimm and the Jets for permission to speak to Brian Schottenhemier according to Jay Glazer. It is unclear if there will be time to interview Grimm who has a short turnaround between a late game Sunday and an early game Saturday. The report says the Jets have yet to give the Bills permission to speak to Schottenheimer. Either interview would have to be done this week or have to wait until their teams are eliminated or go to the Super Bowl to speak to either candidate.

Coaching Rumors Continue: Week two of the coaching search continues and the Bills will likely target assistants from teams that played this past weekend in the wildcard playoff round. They have this week only to interview these coaches as long as their teams are involved in the playoffs. Among those coaches that they may look at are Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, Cardinals OL coach Russ Grimm, Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garett, and Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott. They did not interview one potential candidate during last week's window. That was Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, a report out of San Diego said he declined to be interviewed for the job. John Clayton reports that Grimm will turn down any requests the Bills make to interview him.
