Bills Open Training Camp
Bills Sign Two Offensive Linemen: The Bills filled two of their five open roster spots by signing offensive linemen Antoine Caldwell and Tony Hills. Caldwell was a third round pick of the Texans in 2009 and has 19 starts in 40 games for Houston mainly at guard. He may be able to challenge for the starting left guard spot that has Doug Legursky and Colin Brown battling it out for the starting job. Hills is a journeyman tackle who appeared in four games for the Colts last year. Depth Chart.
Camp Is Open:Training camp officially gets started with a night practice tonight beginning shortly after 6pm. The players reported on Friday and took part in conditioning exams on Saturday. There were also organizational meetings and a full team meeting Saturday night. Doug Marrone and Doug Whaley both seem to understand why Jairus Byrd is not in attendance but Whaley said the lines of communication remain open but it is unclear if talks have taken place recently. Marrone spoke to the media Saturday and said that there will be a 50-50 split at quarterback with EJ Manuel and Kevin Kolb each taking equal reps with the first and second team. They then expect the competition to shake out and how they perform early in camp will help make the decision on the rotation for the early preseason games. Marrone said they will get things going slowly in camp before ramping it up. There will be a full intrasquad scrimmage on Monday night Aug. 5th. Marrone said all the players are full go with the exception of Chris Hairston and they hope he can be cleared to be activated off the PUP list soon.

Scott Released: The Bills released OL Chris Scott after he didn't live up to the conditioning expectations the team had for him. That leaves the team with five open roster spots although one is reserved for Jairus Byrd. Depth Chart.
Bills Release Schuler: The Bills now have four open roster spots after releasing TE Mickey Shuler. The son of the former Jet geat was signed by the Bills back in May. Front Office Page.
Smith Reportedly Restructures: The odds of veteran WR Brad Smith making the team increased with a report from Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post. He reports that he has agreed to restructure his contract with the team. Smith has been moved fully to wide receiver by Doug Marrone who isn't a fan of the wildcat and won't use him at quarterback. He had two years left on his four year deal that would have paid him almost $6 Million if he stayed on the team for both seasons under the former deal.

Players Report To Camp: Today was move in day at St. John Fisher College as every player with the exception of Jairus Byrd arrived for the start of training camp. The players will have meetings and an informal workout tomorrow before the first official practice of the summer on Sunday night. Optimism ruled the day as the players spoke to the media. Mario Williams brought an assortment of Superman hats as he feels he is turning over a new leaf this year. He is among a contingent of defensive players that has spoken to Byrd as they are trying to give him tidbits of the new defense so he can hit the ground running when and if he reports. Williams said Byrd definitely wants to be in Buffalo and at camp. The team has three open roster spots on the 90 man squad, one is being held for Byrd and the other two will likely not be filled as they will be held if needed to replenish injuries. Stevie Johnson says he's 100% healthy and Kyle Williams says he's ready to practice after missing the offseason workouts while recovering from Achilles surgery. Doug Whaley told John Murphy on his show tonight that the team doesn't expect to have anyone else start camp on the active PUP list besides Chris Hairston.

Anderson Released: The Bills have made a couple of roster moves before training camp gets underway. They released Mark Anderson and placed Chris Hairston on the PUP list. Anderson played in just five games in his one season with the Bills after signing a four year $21 Million contract which he earned just over $8 Million of. He reportedly passed his physical but he has struggled all spring overcoming his injury from last season and didn't fit in to Mike Pettine's scheme. Hairston has been battling leg and ankle problems since last season and his move to the PUP list leaves the Bills short on experience in training camp at right tackle. He is on the active PUP list which means he can come off when healthy. Front Office Page.

Whaley's Statement: Bills GM Doug Whaley released a statement regarding the Jairus Byrd contract situation. "We worked very hard to come to a long-term agreement with Jairus, but unfortunately, were unable to reach one before today's deadline," Whaley said. "Our attention will now be focused on a one-year agreement with him and on training camp with our continued efforts to prepare our team for the upcoming season."

No Long Term Deal For Byrd: The 4pm deadline passed quietly and there has been no agreement reached between the Bills and Jairus Byrd as was expected. WGRZ reports Byrd was looking to be the top paid safety in the game while the Bills were looking to make him the 4th or 5th best paid safety in the game. Now it will be a waiting game to see if Byrd signs his tender and goes to camp or beings a holdout. He can't be fined if he doesn't go to camp since he's not under contract.
Byrd Deadline Day: Today is the day as the Bills have until 4pm to lock up Jairus Byrd to a long term deal or else he will have to play for the Bills under a one year deal or sit out. It looks extremely unlikely a deal will be struck. Adam Schefter reports there are no talks scheduled today. Schefter believes this contract dispute will likely linger into the preseason if not longer.
