Rex Ryan Agrees To Become Next Bills Head Coach

Ryan Reportedly Accepts Deal: The Associated Press reports that Rex Ryan has agreed to join the Bills as their head coach. Vic Carucci reports that a deal is done in principle but not signed yet. It is widely reported that the 49ers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman, who interviewed for the Bills top job, will be Ryan's offensive coordinator. The two worked together in Baltimore. There are still conflicting reports on whether or not Jim Schwartz will remain onbaord as the defensive coordinator. Some reports say Ryan wants to bring Dennis Thurman with him for that role, he served the same role with the Jets. QB coach David Lee also may be returning to Buffalo where he coached before joining Ryan with the Jets.

It's Rex Ryan! Several reports say Rex Ryan will be the next head coach of the Buffalo Bills. The finishing touches are being put on a reported five year deal worth $27.5 Million. He was back in Florida Saturday night for a second interview and the team put on a full court press, according to Adam Schefter, and he chose the team he thought wanted him the most. Ian Rappoport says that Marc Trestman or Greg Roman will be his new offensive coordinator. Roman interviewed for the Bills head coaching job and Vic Carucci says he's their man for offensive coordinator. Ryan does run a 3-4 defense which likely means another change at defensive coordinator. One report says he is expected to bring Dennis Thurman with him, he was his defensive coordinator with the Jets. Carucci reports that the Bills have every intention of keeping Jim Schwartz who is under contract for two more years but is a 4-3 guy. Ryan has a career 46-50 regular season record as the Jets head coach and went to back to back AFC Championship games in his first two years as a head coach and has a 4-2 record in the playoffs. He becomes the first coach to switch teams in the same division since Bill Belichick in 1997.

Ryan Begins 2nd Stage: The Bills have begun the 2nd stage of interviews as Rex Ryan was in Florida tonight according to Adam Schefter to have his 2nd interview with the team. The Associated Press reports that the team expects to interview other candidates for a second time before deciding on their next head coach. It is unknown how many candidates will get a second interview but 12 received initial interviews. Reports say Ryan has aligned himself with former Bears head coach Marc Trestman who would reportedly be his offensive coordinator if he lands a head coaching job.

London Morning Game: The Bills have announced that their game in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars on October 25th will start at 9:30am EST. That makes it a 1:30 start in London. This past year they started a game at 9:30am from London for the first time and it was considered a big success for the league. Ticket packages for the game are being offered by Prime Sports with details on the team's website.

Wheatley Leaves: RB coach Tyrone Wheatley has left the Bills to take the same position with the University of Michigan on Jim Harbaugh's staff. Wheatley is an alumni of the school and with the situation in Buffalo up in the air he made the move. Michigan did not need permission from the Bills since it is only needed when making a lateral move in the NFL. In other coaching news, Adam Schefter reports on ESPN that the Giants are expected to interview Bills DL coach Pepper Johnson for their open defensive coordinator position. This would be a loss for the Bills since you would think they would like to keep the defensive staff intact. Chris Mortensen rpeorted on ESPN that if Doug Marrone doesn't get a head coaching job he will be able to join the Texans as a consultant. He is no longer considered the favorite to land the Jets job and is still expected to interview in Chicago. He also interviewed for the Falcons job. The Bills are expected to wrap up their first round of interviews today as Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. He will be the 12th man interviewed for the job and is considered a favorite of GM Doug Whaley. Other interview may take place depending on what happens in the playoff games this weekend. The Bills reportedly want to talk to Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton. McDaniels is unlikely to interview inside of the division however.

Player of the Week Winners: As we do every year we have put all our player of the week winners on one handy page with the key stats that won them the awards. Sammy Watkins and Corey Graham were the only players to win the award multiple times as they both won it twice. Player Of Week Winners.

Final Goats Tally: As we do every year we add up our goats given out each week and tally them up. This year we must have been feeling pretty good because we gave up far less goats than in years past. Kyle Orton easily led the way with five goats while Nickell Robey finished in second with three goats. Three players had two and the rest had one goat. Final Goats Tally.

Final Gameball Tally: As we also do every year we have tallied up the gameballs we gave out each week during the NFL season and put them in a handly list. Sammy Watkins and Jerry Hughes led the way with gameballs in five games. Fred Jackson, Dan Carpenter, and Corey Graham were second with four each. Final Gameball Tally.

Final Grades.

Schwartz Interviewed: The Buffalo News reports that the Bills have interviewed their own defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz for the open head coaching job as expected. Sal Maiorana of the Rochester D&C originally reported that the team will indeed meet with Rex Ryan. Kim Jones of the NFL Network reports that interview will happen tomorrow. The NFL Network also reports they will meet with 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman on Friday. Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson reportedly will be interviewed today after Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur was interviewed yesterday. As always, keep track of the latest on the coaching search with our tracker box on the right side of our homepage.

Bills Add Guard: The Bills have made their 13th signing of the offseason as they added guard Alex Kupper to the roster, signing him to a futures contract. He was an undrafted free agent in 2013 and spent the past two seasons on the Texans practice squad. Eric Wood knows him well as he has worked out with him a lot. He told WGR he's excited to have him on the team. Depth Chart.

Watkins Finalist: Sammy Watkins has been named a finalist for the 2014 Pepsi Rookie of the Year award. He joins Odell Beckham, Jr., Teddy Bridgewater, Mike Evans, and Jeremy Hill as finalists for the award. Fans can vote for the winner at NFL.com. Watkins finished the season with 65 catches for 982 yards and six touchdowns. He faced an uphill battle to get the award as Beckham Jr. put up phenomenal numbers despite missing the first month of the season with a hamstring injury.

Bills To Meet With 4 This Week: Bills brass took yesterday off to regroup and plan to do four interviews this week according to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News. The first interview reported by the paper happened today and that was with Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. The Bills will meet with Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan on Thursday and the news confirmed they will also meet with Detroit defensive coordinator Teryl Austin on Saturday according to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News and Cincinnati offensive coordinator Hue Jackson on Wednesday. Carucci's report also says that Doug Whaley is telling all the candidates that EJ Manuel is doing very well and spoke of him in high regard. He also let the candidates know that progessing his development will be a high priority for whoever the new coach is. The team has already interviewed Mike Shanahan, Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich, Denver offensive coordinator Adam Gase, Seattle offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Our coaching tracker is constantly updated on the right side of our homepage.

Interview Requests Continue: The Bills search for a head coach continues to get bigger and more varied as two new names were added to the mix last night. Reports say the team has requested permission to interview Browns OC Kyle Shanahan and 49ers OC Greg Roman. The Shanahan request came two days after they interviewed his father Mike. There is a report that they may be looking at the father for a GM or czar type role and the son for the head coaching job. We keep you up to date on the ever expanding list of coaching candidates on our tracker box on our homepage.

Shanahan Interviewed: Adam Schefter reports that Mike Shanahan interviewed with the Bills on Sunday. The team has also requested permission to speak to Eagles OC Pat Shurmur. The Bills will not be able to schedule an interview with Colts OC Pep Hamilton during the time period allowed by the league. If the team wants to speak to him they will have to wait until after the Colts are eliminated from the playoffs. The Bills are reportedly trying to setup an interview with Bengals OC Hue Jackson after officially being given permission to speak to him. Doug Marrone is in Atlanta today interviewing with the Falcons.

Marrone Stunted Hackett? Fred Jackson was on WGR this morning and spoke frankly about the events at One Bills Drive over the past week. Jackson admitted that Doug Marrone could have handled leaving better than telling them by text message calling it "like a punch in the stomach". The players attitudes are that they were surprised but need to move on because Doug Marrone has already moved on. When speaking about the offense, Jackson praised Nate Hackett and said he's aggressive by nature but was not allowed to do what he wanted which suggests Marrone handcuffed his hand picked offensive coordinator.

Depth Chart Updated! We have re-launched our depth chart for the 2015 offseason. We have put all players that were on injured reserve, and are under contract for next season, back on the chart. We have taken off unrestricted free agents but left the restricted and exclusive rights free agents since the Bills have the right to match or right to first refusal for these players. We have also added the 12 players that have recently been signed to futures contracts. Depth Chart.
