Bills Beat Giants

Saturday August 20, 2016

Ryan Presser: Rex Ryan said it was a really good performance especially the defense. Thought the effort was great and held them to one third down conversion. Offensively they kept slugging it out and popped some things. Very pleased with the majority of the game. They had seven penalties and that is something they need to keep hammering at. On Marcell Dareus he said they came together as a family and they support Mario 100 percent and their thoughts are with him. It is more important than the suspension and he's excited that he is trying to get his life right. On Karlos Williams he said every decision is make on three factors the team, the team, and the team. Ryan refused to get into why he was cut. He says it's the past and they are focused on what is ahead of them. This football team works really hard and it was nice to see the results. He feels the shoutout in the preseason means nothing. He was extremely happy with how his top two QBs played for the second week in a row and didn't think Cardale Jones played badly either. He loves the really good competition at the wide receiver spot. On Jordan Gay, he said he's very dissapointed with his kicking in the game. He feels he has done a really good job i]on the practice field. The coach said the only injury was to Mike Gillislee and said he's in concussion protocol.

Who Helped Themselves: While the third string QB hurt himself the top two QBs played very well. Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel both did well in the first half leading the Bills to three touchdown drives that should have been five scoring drives. Jerry Hughes was in midseason form and was a menace in the Giants backfield.

Who Hurt Themselves: This list is small as the Bills totally dominated the Giants but it starts with Jordan Gay. He got his first real chance as a place kicker and he failed miserably. He missed an extra point and a trip shot field goal. He better hopes they keep a kickoff specialist again or else he is gone. Blake Annen struggled as he was called for a holding penalty and dropped a pass. Cardale Jones cooled down going 6 of 12 for 83 yards and an interception in a scoreless second half.

Bills Shutout Giants 21-0: The Bills put all the off the field issues behind them and took care of business on the field. The defense dominated at all levels as the Bills shutout the Giants 21-0 at New Era Field. They had four takeaways and shutdown the run throughout sans a 67 yard run when the game was no longer in doubt. Tyrod Taylor played into the 2nd quarter and his last pass of the day was a 13 yard touchdown to LeSean McCoy. He went 7 of 10 for 132 yards and the score. He would have had more but Jerome Felton fumbled on the goal line. EJ Manuel looked very good finishing out the half including leading the team to two touchdown drives. He almost had a third touchdown drive but a controversial play was ruled incomplete as Greg Little battled for the ball in the end zone. Manuel went right back to him after a turnover and hit him for a 19 yard touchdown. Jonathan Williams also had a one yard plunge. On the injury front, Mike Gillislee took a big hit and went into concussion protocol.

Dareus To Rehab: Marcell Dareus left New Era Field in street clothes and shortly after he released a statement through the team that said, "After careful consideration of recent events within my life, I have made the decision to enter a rehabilitation facility. I feel this is the best decision for me, my family and my teammates as I move forward with my career. I appreciate the support of my teammates and the Bills organization through this process." The Bills added, "we are fully supportive of Marcell and this decision to take the time he needs to seek treatment." Doug Whaley said, "he’s family and we are being supportive of him of this step in his life," Whaley said. "I told you guys we wouldn’t give up on him and again we wholeheartedly support this effort." Whaley added he doesn't have a timetable for Dareus to return to the team but you would think it would be when the suspension ends.

Karlos Williams Released: The Bills announced a surprise move before today's game with the Giants. They have released Karlos Williams. It seems to be a shocking move considering first cuts are a week away. The team may feel he's not serious about his conditioning and he was going to be away from the team for the first four weeks which could get him more out of shape. It may make sense to part ways now. The team is loaded in the backfield and they love how good Reggie Bush looks. The timing of the move is very odd a couple of hours before a preseason game this far from cut day. There may be more to this story. Depth Chart.

Gameday: The Bills will play their last home preseason game and their first game ever under the name of New Era Stadium. Rex Ryan said that Tyrod Taylor may play into the second quarter and he's thinking of playing Sammy Watkins for one series. He expects most of the starters on both sides of the ball to play into the 2nd quarter. We will have our blurb on which players helped themselves and which hurt themselves in the game later tonight!

Day 15 Camp Notes: It's hard to believe that training camp is just about over. The Bills held a night practice last night and have another night practice on Monday before breaking camp. They will finish their preparations for the season back at One Bills Drive. Last night's practice lasted just about an hour and a half instead of the normal two hour sessions. Marcell Darues suffered the injury of the day as he hurt his arm but did return to practice. Afterwards, he was seen with a large ice pack on his right elbow. On the field, Jarrett Boykin continues to shine as of late with two more great catches. It was a good night for the kickers as they combined two go 13 for 13 on field goal attempts. Sammy Watkins got the night off and Rex Ryan said he may see the field briefly on Saturday while most starters on both sides of the ball are expected to play into the 2nd quarter. Jerel Worthy got some first team reps at nose tackle as the team prepares for a month without Dareus. Richie Incognito appears closer to returning to action as he battles sore ribs. Manny Lawson was ready to talk to reporters after practice about the investigation against him but the Bills PR staff wouldn't let him.

Bills Statement On Lawson: Despite adamant denials by Manny Lawson and his agent he is indeed under investigation for an alleged domestic violence incident that could have him suspended for the opening day and maybe more. Tim Graham of the Buffalo News broke the story earlier this week and it was vehemently shot down by Lawson's camp. Since then other media outlets have had sources say that the league is indeed investigating and the Bills released a statement today, “we are aware of an investigation by the NFL under the Personal Conduct Policy but we have not heard from the league regarding the results.”

New Era Press Conference: Terry Pegula got the press conference started saying that people who knew Ralph Wilson say he would have been proud to turn the page today with this stadium naming deal. He went on to say he was overcome by the presence of Ralph during his first time on the field. This was followed by a video presentation. CEO Chris Koch said it's a special moment for him and his family as he thanked the Pegulas and the organization for choosing New Era. He has spent the last 20 years building New Era into the brand it has become today and adding New Era Field makes a statement about their committment to the city and their love of football. He knows they have big shoes to fill in changing the name from Ralph Wilson Stadium. He is looking forward to keeping the high standards set by Mr. Wilson. They are entering a new chapter and he's extremely confident this partnership will have a positive impact on the city and it shows what One Buffalo is all about.

Stadium Name Announcement Coming: Today at 11am the Bills and New Era will announce the stadium naming rights deal. It will be called New Era Field and the new nickname will likely end up being "The Cap". A picture on twitter showed the back of the scoreboard that use to say Ralph Wilson Stadium. It now has an advertisement for New Era with the words The Cap in it. Reports say the deal is a seven year deal, the remaining amount of years in the lease, worth around $40 Million which is a nice revenue stream for the Pegulas. They waited a year to do a naming rights deal out of respect for Ralph Wilson. It's been reported that Ralph had been looking at selling the naming rights before he died. Mary Wilson gave the move her blessing in a statement to AP that said, "I love Buffalo, and with all of the resurgence that it's enjoying right now, it's fitting that the new naming rights agreement is with New Era. "Naturally, there's an element of sadness for me personally, that I hope fans would understand. But I'm excited for the Bills' organization and for New Era with their successes. It's so great that a local company of this magnitude will be on this stadium." Some thought Ralph's name would still be somewhere but that apparently is not the case as they don't want to cheapen the deal. New Era has the right to first refusal on a new deal after the lease runs out and it includes a provision that gives them the right to put their name on a new stadium. This is the first indication that the owners are thinking of the future with a new stadium. We will have our usual press conference snippets during and after the announcement.

It's New Era Field: Jeff Russo of WKBW is reporting that he has confirmed the new name of the stadium formerly known as Ralph Wilson Stadium will be New Era Field. There will be a press conference to announce it tomorrow at 11am. There was a picture on twitter that showed the wind blowing the white tarp over the sign and revealing a part of an F under the New Era logo.

Dareus Missed Test: Marcell Dareus addressed the media after practice today and said he found out about the suspension after Saturday night's game and it is the result of a missed drug test. He said he apologized to the team and he knows words don't matter his actions are all that is important. There is some discrepency on when the team found out, Dareus said he told the team immediately while Rex Ryan said he found out yesterday with everyone else. He called it a dumb decision and said it is time to move forward saying that talk is cheap. He feels the team has his back and they love him and know what kind of person he is.

Day 14 Camp Notes: The Bills got Dez Lewis and Reggie Bush back at practice today. Lewis missed nearly a week with a shoulder contusion after his collision with Aaron Williams who remains sidelined with a concussion. Bush was back after being excused for personal reasons for two days. Kevin Seymour got first team reps in the slot for a second straight day with Nickell Robey-Coleman sidelined with an ankle injury. He was out of the boot but walking gingerly today on the sidelines. Richie Incognito and Cordy Glenn continue their work on the side with their injuries.

Dareus Comments: Marcell Dareus released a statement on his instagram feed that stated, "with deepest regrets I want to apologize to the Buffalo Bills organization, my fans, my family and the entire NFL football community for the incident that led to me missing 4 games for the upcoming 2016-2017 season. I will not make excuses for the events in question and will allow the process to proceed as is required by the NFL; however, please know and understand I am committed to the game and am more committed to my Bills organization and fans. This temporary setback will only fuel my desire and commitment to bring Buffalo championships and the Super Bowl. I ask at this time that you continue to believe in me and I will continue to invest all that I have to bring honor and respect to the organization and my fans and ultimately bring Buffalomafia what it deserves - a Super Bowl! Thank you for continuing to support me - I will rise above this setback, as with every challenge brings an opportunity for growth and supreme success!

Bills Statement On Dareus: The Bills released a statement on the suspension of Marcell Dareus that said: "We are very disappointed Marcell chose to put himself first, before his teammates, coaches and the rest of the organization through his recent actions. From ownership down we have made it clear his behavior is unacceptable. We will continue to take the necessary steps to work with him in order that he adheres to the policies set forth by our league. As an organization, we will move forward with our preparations for the start of the 2016 NFL season in Baltimore on September 11." Strong words from the team but they are just words the team is spiraling out of control and the season hasn't even started yet.

Dareus Suspended: The disastrous training camp continues for the Bills. Marcell Dareus has been suspended four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy. He either failed or missed a test for marijuana use. He was suspended one game last year for an arrest for possession of synthetic marijuana in Alabama. The news gets worse as Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reports Manny Lawson may be facing a one game suspension for a domestic violence incident.

Day 13 Camp Notes: The big news on day 13 of training camp was the return of Manny Lawson to practice. He passed his physical and was activated from the PUP list. He took his turn with the first unit at outside linebacker in 11 on 11 drills. They did limit his work in his first day back. Karlos Williams continues to round back into shape as he even took a couple of snaps with the first unit. Nickell Robey-Coleman led the list of players not practicing as he was seen with a walking boot on. Cordy Glenn is out of his walking boot but still not ready to return to practice. Aaron Williams was on the sidelines for the first time since suffering his concussion on Thursday. Also sitting out practice for the Bills were Greg Salas, Dez Lewis, Reggie Bush, and Richie Incognito. Bush was excused yesterday for personal reasons. Shaq Lawson of course remains sidelned as well Rex Ryan said on WGR this morning there is no timetable for his return. Robert Kugler left practice early with trainers after getting shaken up.

Bills Release Hankerson, Barnes; Sign two: One former Falcon joins the Bills and another one is out. The team has released WR Lance Hankerson two days after that Rex Ryan called "a horrible game" against the Colts. Hankerson dropped three passes in that game but has struggled throughout training camp and never really got into the crowded third WR race. They also released DT T.J. Barnes and filled those two roster spots by signing two defensive linemen. They have added Brandon Deaderick and Alameda Ta'Amu. Deaderick appeared in 13 games for Rob Ryan's defense in New Orleans in 2014. He most recently was in Texans camp last summer. He has 17 career starts in 60 games. He has 62 career tackles and 5.5 sacks including three forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. Ta'Amu is a big clogging the middle nose tackle. He appeared in 21 games for the Cardinals in 2013 and 2014. Depth Chart.

Bills Sign Bierman: The team has now official announced the signing of veteran pass rusher Kory Biermann. The former Falcon visited with the Bills during the offseason and will add much needed depth to the outside linebacker spot. He has played his entire nine year career in Atlanta. He has played mostly defensive end in a 4-3 defense but will make the move to Outside linebacker in the Bills 3-4 scheme. He’s played in 114 games in his career and has 37 starts with 23.5 sacks, two interceptions, six passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in his career where he has been mostly a rotational player. To make room on the roster they placed IK Enemkpali on the waived-injured list. If he clears waivers they can place him on injured reserve, or negotiate an injury buyout.

Day 12 Camp Notes: Karlos Williams took to the field for the first time after passing his physical and was taken off the PUP list. Jim Dray returned after missing a week with an ankle injury. Sitting out today's practice were Aaron Williams, Richie Incognito, Cordy Glenn, IK Enemkpali, Reggie Bush, Greg Salas, and Dez Lewis. Rex Ryan confirmed that Enemkpali is out for the year with a torn ACL. Bush was excused for personal reasons. Aaron Williams remains in concussion protocol and Lewis is day to day with a shoulder contusion from their violent collision on Thursday. The team got through the rest of practice today ok healthwise. The offense stuggled in red zone drills in the practice that wrapped up a few minutes earlier than it has been wrapping up.

Sunday August 14, 2016

IK Has Torn ACL: Ian Rapoport was the first to report that IK Enemkpali has a torn ACL. He is also has now reported that an MRI has confirmed this and he will be out for the year. It is an injury that futher depletes the fragile depth at outside linebacker. Lorenzo Alexander was brought in for his special teams prowess but he is the next man up and may end up starting there if Manny Lawson isn't ready for the start of the season. Undrafted Erik Striker now has a better chance at making the club and could be a key backup at linebacker.
