Long Offseason Begins
Whaley Gets Contract Extension: The Bills brass held their end of the year meetings in Florida and the news to come out of it was a contract extension for Doug Whaley the team announced today. All week there have been talks of an extension and also talk that if they don't make the playoffs in 2016 Whaley and Ryan may be out. Kim Pegula tweeted a picture of Whaley signing the contract and then tweeted that the meetings went great and they are already looking forward to next season.
Bills Lose Coach: Assistant OL coach Kurt Anderson has left the Bills to become the offensive line coach at Arkansas. He served as interim OL coach for the Bills when Aaron Kromer was suspended for the first six games of the season. In a statement released by the team's website Anderson said, "I'm so thankful to head coach Rex Ryan and the Bills' organization for everything they have done for me during my time in Western New York. It was a difficult decision to leave a community that has been good to me and my family." Front Office Page.

Brooks Gone? Unrestricted free agent Ron Brooks appears to think his time in Western New York is over. He tweeted on Friday, "Preciate everybody with the Buffalo Bills and the great fans of WNY!!! It's been a good ride. Sad to leave but business is business." He then deleted the tweet but it wouldn't be a surpise to see him go elsewhere as he is buried on the depth chart in Buffalo.

Bills Sign WR: The Bills have reportedly signed former Packers wide receiver Jarrett Boykin according to a tweet from his agent. Boykin played with Tyrod Taylor at Virginia Tech and the two had great success together catching 53 passes for 847 yards and 6 TDs in 2010. In 2013 in Green Bay he caught 49 passes for 681 yards and three scores. He was in training camp with Carolina this past year but didn't make the team. Our depth chart is updated for the offseason. We have put the injured reserve players back on the chart and took out all unsigned free agents. Front Office Page.

Whaley Contract Extension Likely: Shortly after Vic Carucci reported sources saying that Doug Whaley and Rex Ryan were given an ultimatum it now appears the opposite is happening. Carucci's report said if Whaley did not build a playoff team next year he and Ryan would be fired. Reports came out throughout the day saying the opposite however. Jeremy White of WGR was the first to report that Whaley is about to get a contract extension as he is in the final year of his deal. Carucci's paper the Buffalo News also reported this among other people from the local media who also reported that the ultimatum story is false. If Whaley gets a new deal that would mean no ultimatum was given. It would make sense to let him play out his deal if that was the case, similiar to what they are likely doing with Tyrod Taylor. Terry Pegula told the Buffalo News in a text that the report of an ultimatum is BS. Twice with the Sabres Pegula has given extensions only to fire them less than a year later so he isn't adverse to paying off contracts.

Pegula Ultimatum? Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News reports that a source says Terry Pegula met with Doug Whaley and Rex Ryan last week and told them to get the team to the playoffs next year or be fired. Pegula issued a statement last week saying both men were safe but gave no timetable as to how long they are safe for. Ryan has four years left on his deal while Whaley is in the final year of his contract. Jeremy White of WGR reports that the team is finalizing a contract extension for Whaley, if that is true than this ultimatum almost assuredly didn't happen. Sources also told Carucci that Ryan will make two or three changes to his coaching staff but defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman is apparently safe.
Players Signed: The Bills took care of some house cleaning by signing seven of their nine practice squad players to futures contracts. Cyril Richardson, Ronald Patrick, Phillip Thomas, Jonathan Dowling, Blake Annen, Jacob Maxwell, and Cedric Reed are now under contract for next yeawr. The team also extended the contracts of three of their four exclusive rights free agents. Colton Schmidt, Mike Gillislee, and Mario Butler are now locked up. As exclusive rights free agents they had no other options anyway. The team also locked up Greg Salas who would have been an unrestricted free agent. You can follow all roster moves and check out our list of free agents this offseason on our newly launched 2016 edition of our Front Office Page! .

End Of Season News Conference: Rex Ryan and Doug Whaley held their end of the year press conference this afternoon. The message was they are going to stay the course and they will need to do some tweaks but they are on the right path. They are not happy with the 8-8 record and expect the defense to get better. They will not be able to do major restructuring because they don't have that flexibility this year. They will concentrate on keeping their own and said Richie Incognito and Cordy Glenn are the priorities to re-sign. Ryan said Tyrod Taylor is his quarterback next year and Whaley said he will have a chance to earn a longterm contract. Ryan would not commit to Dennis Thurman returning but said the evaluation process has not started yet. His former defensive coordinator Mike Pettine is now available along with his brother. Whaley called reports of friction between him and Ryan is just tabloid journalism. Kyle Williams wants to return and all signs point to him remaining with the Bills. Whaley said Aaron Williams' injury is not career threatening and they expect him back next year ready to go. Marcell Dareus broke his foot late in the game yesterday but finished the game anyway.
Lynn To Interview: ESPN reported first that Bills RB coach Anthony Lynn will interview for the Dolphins head coaching job on Wednesday. Former Bills coach Doug Marrone is also suppose to interview in Miami. Rex Ryan admitted they gave permission for the Dolphins to speak with him.
Locker Cleanout Day: The players went through the depressing day of cleaning out their lockers, saying their goodbyes, and meeting with the coaches while the media waited for comments. Marquise Goodwin said that he will attempt to qualify for the olympics next year and if he does, he will ask the Bills for time off during training camp next year. Robert Woods admitted he tore his groin muscle in the preseason and tried to play with it all year before shutting things down for the last month of the season. Richie Incognito did say that he feels he owes the Bills for taking a chance on him and that they have told him he is an offseason priority to resign.
Bills To Draft 19th: The Bills will pick 19th in the NFL draft after yesterday's win cost them a few spots in the draft order. The Jets are the only team not in the playoffs that will pick lower than the Bills who pick last of all the 8-8 teams based on strength of schedule.
