Bills Blown Out By Jets 31-13

Drew BledsoeAnother Pathetic Effort : The Bills need an overhaul in all three aspects of the game. The special teams had a key penalty and gave up some huge returns. For the seventh time this year there were no takeaways from the pathetic Bills defense. The offense was also held to one touchdown for the third straight game. It was total team loss and it shows when you break it down position by position. Gameday Grades.

Jets Blow Out Bills: It was a game every bit as bad as the Patriots loss. The Bills were in a must win situation but fell to the Jets 31-13 at the Meadowlands. Curtis Martin ran all over the Bills for 120 yards and Drew Bledsoe turned the ball over three times as the Jets dominated the game as they opened up a 24-3 lead and won easily. We will have our complete anlaysis and gameday grades in a bit. Complete Review.

Injury Update: Antoine Winfield was in and out of the game with a lower leg strain. Coach Williams doesn't believe it is serious. Travis Henry left the game briefly when he got his bell rung but he returned and played well. London Fletcher played without aggravating his knee injury. Tony Driver is recovered from his hip injury but he was inactive anyway. Injury Page.

Playoffs Probably Out: The Bills loss coupled with a Patriots and Dolphins win puts the Bills in sole possession of last place in the division two games behind Miami and a terrible 1-3 division record to go along with the 2-6 conference record. All these numbers mean one thing, the Bills are not going to the playoffs. Coach Williams ever the optimist thinks the Bills are still in the mix.

Gameday Weather: It should be a beautiful day for football today at the Meadowlands. It will be mostly sunny with a high temperature of 51°. It will be a bit windy as they will be out of the WNW at 10 - 15 mph.

Jets Add Coles: The Jets have added WR Laveranues Coles on the injury report as probable. He was experiencing back spasms and missed Thursday's practice. Injury Page.

Friday November 22, 2002

Thomas Upgraded: Both teams are amazingly very healthy for Sunday's game. The lone Bill on the injury report, London Fletcher is practicing and will play on Sunday. The Jets have upgraded Randy Thomas to probable and he will start at guard. Injury Page.

Favors May Play: Recently signed Greg Favors may see some action this week against the Jets. He is practicing with the team and will most likely see action on special teams. There are a few defensive packages that also may see him at outside linebacker.

Fletcher Will Play: Jay Riemersma practiced yesterday and will play on Sunday. He is listed as probable on the injury report. Fletcher playing is very important because of the lack of an experienced backup on the depth chart at his middle linebacker position.

Jones Moved: The Bills made more roster moves today, moving Marcus Jones to the reserved injured list as expected. That freed up a roster spot, the club used to activate TE Brady McDonnell off of the practice squad. He will take the spot of recently released Cory Geason. They then re-added WR Clarence Coleman to the practice squad. Front Office Page.

Williams Calls This A Highlight Game: Coach Williams' press conference was dominated by talk about the special teams. He feels the Jets kick return game is going to be something to watch since they burned the Bills for two scores in the opener. On defense, he said the team needs to worry about Curtis Martin first. They have the same system they had in the opener, just a different quarterback. He feels Chad Pennington has worked well with his teammates to execute well. He called this game the highlight game of the year so far as it is the start of three straight division games. He knows the Bills have to bring their A game since the Jets are playing very, very well right now. He feels the key to the rest of the season is playing well along the line of scrimmage. He also said the team is going back to the basics as far as the red zone offense goes since it is important for them to improve in that aspect of the game. Takeaways is another area they look to improve, hopefully even getting some of them on special teams.

Williams Feels Favors Can Help: Coach Williams said that Greg Favors should be a good acquistion down the stretch. He called him a tough, physical guy who will help on special teams. Favors knowledge of the system will help accelerate his helpfulness on the field.

Bledsoe Knows This Is A Pivotal Game: Drew Bledsoe held his Wednesday press conference this afternoon and spoke about how pivotal this game is to the entire season. He knows that this game counts like two and a loss puts the Bills in a big hole, and a win lets them control their own destiny. On the Jets, he said they are playing as good as anyone right now and the defense is playing at a very high level for them. He felt the approach last week was very good but the downfall was not finishing the drives. He admits that the team needs to run the ball down in the red zone.

Bledsoe Leads Pro Bowl Balloting: The Bills are doing very well in the fan balloting for the Pro Bowl. Drew Bledsoe leads all AFC players in votes. Eric Moulds tops the AFC WR voting, while Brian Moorman tops the voting for punters in the AFC. You can place your vote at NFL.com.

One Injury To Report: The Bills only have one injury to report. London Fletcher is listed as probable with the slight knee sprain he suffered against Kansas City. The Jets only have two players on the injury report. Two guards are listed as questionable for them. Injury Page.

More On Jones: The deal signed by Marcus Jones on Monday was a three year deal, worth about $3.3 Million, not including any bonuses. The Bills must love this guy, that his a nice contract for someone that physically can't play and needs more surgery. The Bills are also picking up his surgery and rehab expenses.

Tuesday November 19, 2002

Bills Sign Favors: The Bills continued their busy week in the front office by signing free agent LB Greg Favors to a contract. They also released Reggie Germany from the reserved-injured list. Favors was a fourth round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs but spent the last three years in Tennessee, so he is used to Gregg Williams defense. Favors plays on the outside and may challenge Keith Newman for some playing time. These moves come on the heels of the Marcus Jones signing and the release of two Corey Gleason and Maugaula Tuitele yesterday. Depth Chart.

Division Matchup Huge: The Bills and Jets are two teams going in the opposite direction. The Jets have won three straight, the Bills have lost three straight. Both teams are at .500 and in the logjam known as the AFC East playoff race. Both teams face virtual must wins on Sunday, so we expect a dogfight. The Bills look to avenge the opening day loss and Drew Bledsoe will try to make up for his interception late in the game last week. The Jets have a new look since opening day as Chad Pennington is now the quarterback and playing extremely well. Complete Preview.

Monday November 18, 2002

Bills Make Roster Moves: The Bills officially signed free agent DE Marcus Jones this afternoon. After being on the roster for 24 hours he will be placed on injured reserve so he can have more knee surgery. Tom Donahoe told FAN TV today that the signing was basically the first roster addition for next year since he won't play this season. The Bills made room for Jones by releasing two players, TE Corey Geason and LB Maugaula Tuitele. That leaves the Bills with one open roster spot, and they will have two spots open when Jones goes on IR. Look for another signing soon. Front Office Page.

Red Zone Blues: The Bills got into the red zone four times yesterday and came away with just one touchdown. They have now only scored two touchdowns in two games as suddenly the high powered offense is really sputtering. The big question on everybody's minds is why the Bills didn't run the ball more with Travis Henry in the red zone? He was running well but only got three touches inside the 20 on a possible 15 attempts. That is shocking considering he was running well and has had a nose for the end zone this year.

Injury Update: The only injury of note yesterday was London Fletcher. As we reported yesterday he is one of many players that were banged up in the second half. He actually went into the locker room for a while and has been diagnosed with a slight knee sprain. He is expected to be ok. The other banged up Bills should be fine. Injury Page.
