NEWS ARCHIVES - SEPT 9TH - SEPT 14TH, 2003 PREVIOUS WEEK

Bills Pull Out Another Rout

Drew Bledsoe - AP Photo Passing Game Rises Again: The offensive philosophy has changed this year to a power running game and ball control. Today against Jacksonville neither of those things worked so they had to flashback to early last year and rely on the right arm of Drew Bledsoe. In a game that was reminiscent of last year, the passing game shined in the rout of Jacksonville and the receivers and QB both deserved A+ grades. Gameday Grades.

Bills Blowout Jaguars: The Bills went to 2-0 with a 38-17 blowout win over Jacksonville. Travis Henry ran for three scores and Drew Bledsoe had a huge game, throwing for 314 yards. The offense was the story today as the passing game was clicking on all cylinders as the team refused to suffer a letdown from the opening day rout of the Patriots. Game Review.

Bills Come Away Ok: Into the fourth quarter the Bills had a few players slowed by the heat including Travis Henry, Pierson Prioleau, Sammy Morris and Takeo Spikes but they all returned. Morris was shaken up a second time late in the game. Jeff Posey was replaced by Josh Stamer for most of the second half but no word on if Posey was hurt. Injury Page.

Gameday Weather: The heat will be a factor in Jacksonville today as the high temperature is expected to be 87°. There will be partly cloudy skies with a 10% chance of rain.

Bills In Jacksonville: The Bills take to the skies today for the first time this regular season as they travel to Jacksonville for tomorrow's steamy weather matchup with the Jaguars. They held their last preparation on the field yesterday and Drew Bledsoe kept the offense on the field for an extra 15 minute walkthrough without the coaches.

Jaguars Banged Up: The Jaguars are a bit banged up heading into Friday's game against the Bills. They have downgraded DB James Tripp to questionable and feel that WR Micah Ross will not be available with his injury. Injury Report.

Heat May Be A Problem: Coach Gregg Williams said that the team is prepared for the heat of Florida as they are making sure everyone stays hydrated all week. The high temperature is expected to be 87° and the team has only played 15 games in their history in weather that hot. It could be a factor the next two weeks as the Bills travel back to Florida to face the Dolphins next week but that is a night game.

Bills Add Myers To Practice Squad: The Bills waited only a day to fill their open spot on the practice squad. WR Jerel Myers rejoins the Bills on the practice squad. He was with the team all spring and summer but was released in August. He takes the spot of another wide receiver, Rodney Wright was released yesterday.

Triumphant Return To Boston: The last we checked in with Bills Daily correspondent Tony Bogyo he was psyching himself up to make the trek from Boston to Buffalo for the opener. Now he tells us about his journey and triumphant return back to enemy territory. Complete Story.

Aiken Questionable: Sam Aiken is the lone Bill on the injury report and has been upgraded to questionable with his hamstring injury. He likely will end up being inactive anyway. The Jaguars have six players on the report, one doubtful, one questionable, and four listed as probable. Injury Report.

Williams Presser: Coach Williams said that the team knows that they only had 24 hours to enjoy the win and the focus remains outstanding on the team. There were a lot of things to work and the team had very good attendance on the off day yesterday with everyone but a few showing up to look at film. The coaching staff led by Rusty Jones is getting the team ready for the 90° heat of Jacksonville by keeping the team hydrated. The coach saw some really good things from Jacksonville in film study especialy QB Mark Brunell and RB Fred Taylor. He calls Taylor a very special back in this league.

Bills Release Wright: The Bills announced today that they have released WR Rodney Wright from the practice squad. They haven't named a replacement leaving them with one open spot on the squad.

Bledsoe Speaks To Media: Drew Bledsoe addressed the media during his usual Wednesday press conference today. He warned that success could be as hard to deal with as failure. The veteran leaders need to step up so that the preparation is as good as it was last week and consistently that good all year. He feels the team will not be overconfident because the Jagauars defense represents a different but tough challenge then the Patriots did. Bledsoe said the team will pick Bobby Shaw's brain a bit since he played in Jacksonville. The key to dealing with the heat is keeping hydrated during the week but it is an advantage for the Jaguars. He feels Josh Reed will have a good year and said he has to because the team is counting on him. On Sammy Morris, he says he was ready to step into the third down back role last year and expects good things from him like he did on opening day. He said their are issues to address including the two turnovers and ten penalties they suffered against New England as well as some missed assignments.

Spikes Awarded: Takeo Spikes was named the AFC Defensive Player Of The Week for his two interception effort against New England on Sunday. It was the second time in his career that he won the honor and the first time a Bill got that honor on opening day.

Bills Can't Letdown: The Bills must guard against a letdown this weekend in Jacksonville after their emotional rout of New England on Sunday. The Jagaurs should be fired up for their home opener as they look to atone for blowing a 17 point lead in the second half on opening day. Should make for an interesting battle. Game Preview.

Bills Fans Uneasy: Fans may begin to grow uneasy as the national media begins a groundswell of support and predictions that the team is going to win the division and beyond. This isn't the same as flying under the radar and sneaking up on teams. Joe Chenelly has his weekly commentary. Complete Story.

Bills Get Measure Of Revenge: For one day everything was right with the world. The Bills and Bledsoe got their revenge on the Patriots from last year's two demolitions at the hands of New England. Complete Story.

Haggan To Practice Squad: The second practice squad move the Bills made yesterday was adding seventh round pick Mario Haggan to the squad. He was released last week when Lawyer Milloy was signed. Haggan replaced Jerton Evans on the squad, he was released.

Bills Add QB: The Bills have signed QB Brandon Doman to the practice squad. To make room for him they once again released QB Jason Johnson. Doman was a fifth round pick of the 49ers last year and did not play for them in 2002. He was cut this preseason after he was beat out for their third string job by Ken Dorsey. Coach Williams said that the team will talk about moving him up when he becomes familiar with the system. The team is currently only carrying two quarterbacks.
