Bills Lose Another Heartbreaker

AP Photo - Trent Edwards & J.P. Losman Goodell On Bills Future: To put a bigger damper on a depressing day for Bills fan how about some statements from Roger Goodell on the long term survival of the Bills in Buffalo. Goodell said fan support is the key to a team staying in Buffalo when Ralph Wilson is gone. He says Wilson has done a great job of keeping the team economically viable in the depressed region. The real issue is keeping the community support at this high level to keep the team in town. Goodell doesn't usually go to Monday night games but wanted to be at Ralph Wilson Stadium, he's a Jamestown native.

Good Grades For Defense: The defense played a stellar game forcing six turnovers and holding the high powered Dallas offense at bay for most of the game before wearing down at the end. The offense really could do nothing scoring just one field goal. The special teams had some good (a touchdown) and some bad (the onside kick loss). Gameday Grades.

Another Tough Loss: Cowboys rookie kicker Nick Folk hit a 53 yard field goal as time expired to hand the Bills another crushing loss 25-24. The Bills did almost everything right forcing six turnovers including five Tony Romo interceptions. They returned two of them for scores as George Wilson and Chris Kelsay scored touchdowns. Terrence McGee returned a kickoff 103 yards for a score as well. The Bills thought they iced the game when Jabari Greer wrestled a two point conversion pass away from Terrell Owens with :20 left. The Cowboys though recovered the ensuing onside kick and moved the ball into range for the winning kick. Game Review.

Butler Hurt In Loss: Brad Butler left the game with a hip contusion and did not return. Terrence McGee was slowed in the 2nd half with leg cramps that kept him in and out of the lineup. Marshawn Lynch banged up a shoulder and was in and out as well late in the game. Injury Page.

Monday October 8, 2007

Wilson To Start: Wide Receiver turned Safety George Wilson will get the start at free safety with Donte Whitner playing strong safety. Whitner is expected to play some at free safety as well with Bryan Scott getting some reps at strong safety.

Ellison To Start: Keith Ellison is officially back. He will start at weakside linebacker tonight. Angelo Crowell moves back to the strong side.

Gameday Inactives: With all the injuries the Bills have only one healthy inactive for tonight's game. Copeland Bryan is that player. The injured inactives are: Ryan Denney, Coy Wire, Ashton Youboty, J.P. Losman, Jim Leonhard, and Peerless Price. Fred Jackson is the emergency QB.

Warm, Storms Possible: The warm summer-like weather in the Northeast will continue for tonight's prime time battle at the Ralph but with it may come some thunderstorms. The gametime temperature will be in the low 70s falling to about 70° when the game ends. There will be a 30% chance of thunderstorms during the wild tailgaiting and the early portion of the game turning partly cloudy with winds light out of the west southwest at 9mph.

Sunday October 7, 2007

WR Shuffle: The surprising end to Peerless Price's season created a shuffle at the wide receiver position. The team has decided to go into this game with just four receivers, S George Wilson could play there in a pinch. Sam Aiken will get more reps than he is used to getting throughout his NFL career as he becomes an outside threat as the number four receiver. He hads a little height to the unit. It is undetermined who will be the number two receiver but it won't matter much as Josh Reed and Roscoe Parrish will see a lot of playing time. Parrish is used to playing in the slot but he's likely to move outside in the three receiver set with Reed in the slot. The coaches have been weary of over using Parrish because of his size but he may finally get the reps he has wanted all year.

Saturday October 6, 2007

Cowboys Banged Up: The Cowboys are a bit banged up in the secondary as well although there won't be any sympathy coming from the Bills who are more banged up. CB Terrence Newman is back for the Cowboys after missing a few weeks with a foot injury but they will be without CBs Anthony Henry and Courtney Brown. The Bills will be getting Keith Ellison back but remain decimated in the secondary. Injury Page.

Friday October 5, 2007

Hargrove Activated: The Bills have made a move everyone expected by activating Anthony Hargrove from the exempt list after being on the reserved-suspended list the first four weeks of the season. To make room for him they placed Kevin Harrison on injured reserve. That move was also expected as Harrison tore up his ACL on the opening kickoff against the Jets.

Price Done For Year: The injury epidemic has spread to the offensive side of the ball in a very surprising way. Peerless Price has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a bulging disc in his neck. He underwent surgery today. This was a shock as Price has practiced and played all season. Price will be placed on injured reserve next week. Tests yesterday revealed the damage to the neck which wasn't the result of a hit but developed over his career instead. J.P. Losman and Ashton Youboty have been ruled out of Monday's game. Keith Ellison is listed as questionable. Injury Page.

Thursday October 4, 2007

Ellison Practices Again: Keith Ellison made it through a second practice today but didn't practice with the first unit. He still may start on Monday night or play without starting. Ashton Youboty did not practice again as well making it more likely he won't play on Monday. Injury Page.

Youboty Likely Out; Denney Close: Ryan Denney is closing in on returning to action but will remain out this week. He did some individual work on the blocking sleds at the beginning of practice yesterday then went to work with trainers. It appears he will return after the bye. Ashton Youboty did not practice yesterday and appears likely to be out this week with a sprained ankle. He has not been ruled out officially at this point. Injury Page.

Wednesday October 3, 2007

Losman Out; Ellison Back: Dick Jauron said today that J.P. Losman will not play on Monday night although he is not listed as out as of yet. He is progressing well from his sprained knee but he is not ready to practice yet. As expected Trent Edwards will now get his second straight start against the Cowboys on Monday night. Some positive injury news, Keith Ellison returned to practice and did almost everything. If he doesn't have any complications including soreness and responds well tomorrow there is a good chance he will be back in the starting lineup at weakside linebacker on Monday night.

Safety Switch: Jim Leonhard has been ruled out as well Monday night, he hopes to get back after the bye since he feels better than he did Monday but he's not ready to practice. The Bills have decided to shake up the safety position in Leonhard's absence. Donte Whitner will move from strong to free safety and Bryan Scott will start at strong safety against Dallas. Whitner has the speed to play the new position while Scott has the size to get up in the box and do some hitting in the run defense.

Hargrove Exempt: The Bills took Anthony Hargrove off the reserved-suspended list but did not activate him. He was placed on the exempt list. The team has until 4pm on Monday to activate him or release him. It is very likely they will activate him at that point and place Kevin Harrison on injured reserve. He is permitted to practice with the team while on the exempt list this week.

Greer Honored: Jabari Greer was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week. He becomes the first Bill to win a weekly honor this year. He had a big interception against the Jets and also had five tackles and a pass breakup.

Bills Face Tough Battle: With a win under their belt the team will be psyched for their first home Monday night game since 1994 and their first appearance since 2000. This will be a much tougher battle than last week as the Cowboys high powered offensive attack should take advantage of the Bills depleted defense. Complete Preview.

Look At History Of QB Situation: Fans are annointing Trent Edwards as the future QB star of the Bills. You may want to temper your enthusiasm a bit and take a look at the history of another ugly QB controversy before buying your Edwards jersey. Complete Story.

Monday October 1, 2007

Losman Concerned: J.P. Losman told the media today that he is concerned for his starting job after the performance put out by Trent Edwards yesterday. He said in this league you never want to go out with an injury because you may not come back. He called it the nature of the league that no job is secure. Dick Jauron said it makes sense that Edwards will start the Monday night game against the Cowboys but wouldn't rule out going back to Losman if healthy. He said they will wait and see how the week develops since they have an extra day to prepare for the Monday night game. Losman said Trent played well as did the entire offense. Losman said his number one focus right now is rehabbing his knee, he isn't really worried too much about the starting job at this point.

Youboty May Miss Game: Coach Jauron said that Ashton Youboty may miss the Cowboys game. He is taking a wait and see approach and won't rule him out yet. He expects his sprained ankle to take a week or two to heal but it could be less than that.Injury Page.

Harrison Injury Serious: It looks like another player is headed to injured reserve. Kevin Harrison suffered a serious knee injury on the opening kickoff yesterday and Dick Jauron said today he's likely lost for the year. He is likely to placed on IR this week with the activation of Anthony Hargrove off of the suspended list. The injury news wasn't much better on Jim Leonhard he suffered a calf injury late in the game and said he felt a pop. He was hobbling around the locker room today not walking well at all. Injury Page.

The Debate Begins: The debate has begun on sports talk shows and with fans around the country. Who should be the starting QB, Trent Edwards or J.P. Losman when healthy? Fans are saying Edwards based on the poll on our homepage by a 77% clip at this point. Edwards was steady and poised in his first start against a weak Jets defense. As we reported yesterday, Dick Jauron said he will start the player that gives him the best chance to win at any position, not a ringing endorsement for Losman. Edwards will inevitably get the start this week as it appears too soon for Losman to play. I guess it's time to take a wait and see approach. If Edwards can do it on again on Monday night against an undefeated team than we have a full blown controversy. If he struggles we still need to see what we have in Losman but time is running out quickly on him to prove he's the future of the team. A few interesting tidbits, Edwards became the first Bills rookie QB to win his first start since Joe Ferguson in 1973. He also had the best completion percentage by a Bills rookie ever and 8th all time with his 22 of 28 passing. The Bills showed faith in him and surprised the Jets by coming out throwing on 9 of the first 12 plays. The Jets and everyone else thought the team would pound the ball on the ground.
