NEWS ARCHIVES - OCT 13TH - OCT 19TH, 2008 PREVIOUS WEEK

Bills Go To 5-1 With Win Over Chargers

Total Team Effort: The Bills put together a nice team effort to pull out a huge win over the Chargers. The banged up defense made their share of plays to keep the Chargers high powered offense from putting up big numbers on the power less scoreboard. The offense moved the ball well although they struggled to finish off drives they did enough for a big home win. Gameday Grades.

Bills Win 23-14: Trent Edwards completed 25 of 30 passes and Kawika Mitchell had an interception and a forced fumble in the fourth quarter to lift the Bills to a 23-14 win over the Chargers to ensure they will stay in sole possession of first place heading into three straight division games. The power in the stadium went in and out as TV and radio coverage was spotty throughout but the Bills put up a solid effort to pull out the win. Lee Evans and Marshawn Lynch both scored touchdowns and Rian Lindell hit three of four field goals in the win. Check out our complete review on our gameday homepage and take our poll on who you think was the player of the game on our homepage. Game Review.

DiGiorgio Hurt: The Bills played without Aaron Schobel and Melvin Fowler who missed the game with their injuries. Ashton Youboty suited up but did not play. Brad Butler, Jason Peters, and Brian Moorman all got banged up but were ok. John DiGiorgio suffered the most serious injury as he hurt his knee and did not return. Injury Page.

Weather Nice: It should be a nice crisp autumn day in Western New York for today's game. The gametime temperature will be in the low 50s with little wind and sunshine with little chance of precipitation.

Battle At Safety? With the injuries at corner, the Bills may use a lot of three safety sets. That means we may see more of George Wilson tomorrow against the Chargers. You may see more of him even if Ashton Youboty plays since he got some first team reps this week even though Ko Simpson was healthy enough to problem. That leads me to believe that there may be a battle for that starting safety spot next to Donte Whitner.

McGee Out: It's official, Terrence McGee has been ruled out of his second straight game with a sprained knee. Complicating the woes at corner is that Ashton Youboty is questionable after being limited in practice this week with a foot injury. Leodis McKelvin will likely start at corner. The Bills say they will get created in the defensive backfield with just three healthy corners, two of them being rookies. Expect Donte Whitner to be moved around the field a lot as he will likely play both safety positions and the nickel. Aaron Schobel and Melvin Fowler are also questionable after not practicing at the end of this week.

Schobel, McGee, Fowler Remain Sidelined: It appears less likely each day that Aaron Schobel, Terrence McGee, and Melvin Fowler will play on Sunday. None of the three practiced again on Friday as Schobel was still wearing a boot. McGee was doing a few things on his knee but not nearly enough to play. Injury Page.

Thursday October 16, 2008

Fowler Out Today: Melvin Fowler joined Aaron Schobel and Terrence McGee on the sidelines today. Fowler is bothered by an elbow injury and did not practice last week. He did practice Monday and Wednesday. Duke Preston took the first team reps in his place and would start if Fowler can't go. Dick Jauron said all three players are 50-50 for Sunday's game. Injury Page.

McCargo Back: John McCargo is back with the Bills and he practiced with the team today. McCargo made a brief statement after practice saying that anything he says would not be positive at this time and doesn't want to talk until a later time. Dick Jauron said he's glad to have him back and has no problems with him. He doesn't believe the situation will be awkward. What do you think? take our poll on our homepage and let us know!

Deal Off: Reports say the deal between the Bills and the Colts is off. John McCargo reportedly failed his physical because of a bulging disc in his back discovered during his exam. The Bills were suppose to receive a fourth round pick for him. His rights revert back to Buffalo and its unclear what the Bills will do next.

Wednesday October 15, 2008

Schobel In Boot: It appears the consecutive game streak that Aaron Schobel has is in serious jepoardy. He has been playing with a nagging foot injury but it appears to continue to get worse. He did not practice again today and is wearing a walking boot for the first time since suffering the injury. Terrence McGee did test his sprained knee out on a very limited basis today in practice. Everyone else practiced including Trent Edwards and Roscoe Parrish who both say they are ready to play this week. Derek Fine is also practicing for the first time this year after being out with a thumb injury Injury Page.

Bills Offered A 3? Various reports say that the Bills did come through with an offer of a third round pick for Tony Gonzalez. Reports say that they were one of two teams to offer a third round pick for him but the Chiefs stood firm on either a second round pick or a second and a fifth. Gonzalez reportedly is upset he wasn't moved for a third like he was told he would be.

Tuesday October 14, 2008

4th Rounder For McCargo: Reports says that the Bills get a 4th round pick for John McCargo. This is a bit of a blow since they traded up into the first round to get him.

McCargo Traded: The Bills did pull off one trade at the trading deadline but it wasn't the much anticipated addition of Tony Gonzalez. Instead there was a substraction, they traded John McCargo to the Colts for an undisclosed draft pick. McCargo was the one big bust of the short lived Marv Levy era as GM. They traded up to get him in the first round three years ago and while he showed flashes he never peformed consistently. What do you think of this trade? Take our poll on our homepage and let us know!

Good Matchup This Week: The players have their normal Tuesday off today and the will hit the ground running tomorrow to get ready for the big matchup with the Chargers. It will be a big game to see where the Bills are out after their bye. They will look to establish the run against a good team that got a breakout game last week. It will be their first time at home in nearly a month. Complete Preview.

Monday October 13, 2008

Banged Up Players Practice: Trent Edwards wasn't the only hurt player to return to practice. Joining him on the practice field were Ko Simpson, Chris Kelsay, Roscoe Parrish and Ashton Youboty. Parrish is ahead of schedule in his recovery from thumb surgery and may play as early as this week. Simpson's hamstring injury wasn't that serious since it wasn't in the middle of the hamstring. Not practicing today were Aaron Schobel and Terrence McGee. Schobel hopes to play through ligament damamge in his foot. McGee remains out with a sprained knee at this time. Injury Page.

Edwards Expects To Start Sunday: Trent Edwards was able to participate in the full practice today and says he's fine and ready to play on Sunday. J.P. Losman took the first snaps of practice during a no huddle drill but Edwards took the remainder of the first team reps. He was sharp in practice as he said he slowed things down to ease himself back in after missing all of the bye week practices but didn't show any rust. He did have some headaches after the concussion but they have been gone since the weekend. He was given medical clearance to practice but will have a baseline test tomorrow to make sure his results are similiar to the test he took before the season. That is likely the last obstacle in keeping him from playing on Sunday.

Edwards Practices: Chris Brown is reporting on the team's website that Trent Edwards is practicing with the team today and taking part in at least individual drills. He was taking handoffs and throwing some passes. This is a good step towards him possibly playing on Sunday.

Bills Go Back To Work: The Bills get back to work today after a nice four day weekend to rest bumps and bruises and to get away from the game. Everyone is anxiously awaiting word on whether or not Trent Edwards will play this weekend. Don't expect Dick Jauron to give any more insight until Wednesday at least. Adam Schefter reports on the NFL Network that the Bills aren't in a rush to get Edwards back on the field as they want to make sure he's better. The Buffalo News reports he had what is called a "standard" concussion and he is feeling better but the team will give no word on whether or not he'll practice this week and play on Sunday.

Bye Week Help: The Bills got some help on the bye week as the Patriots got blown out 30-10 on Sunday night by the Chargers. This could be a double break for the Bills since San Diego was due for a breakout game and now they may have got it out of their system. The loss by the Patriots drop them to 3-2 and keeps the Bills in sole possession of first place in the division. The Patriots are tied with the Jets for second as New York beat winless Cincinnati yesterday 26-14. The Dolphins didn't join the logjam in 2nd place as they fell to Houston on a last second touchdown yesterday and fell to 2-3.
