Training Camp Continues

Day Off: The players get a well deserved day off after eight straight practice days that included 10 full practices in all and six walk throughs. Yesterday's practice saw some red zone work again as the team tries to fix the woes they had last year down deep. Kirk Chambers sat out with a sore foot that has been bothering him. Coach Jauron thought it would help for him to get an extra day of rest with the day off coming up today. Injury Page.

Saturday August 1, 2009

Morning Practice: The Bills hit the field this morning for their only practice of the weekend. The players get tomorrow off. Corey Mace and Antwain Spann saw their first action with the team. Spann is getting reps at safety according to Chris Brown from the team's official website. Kirk Chambers was not on the field today along with Steve Johnson, Shawn Nelson, John McCargo, Copeland Bryan, Marcus Smith, and Dustin Fox.

Roster Moves: The Bills officially announced the signing of Corey Mace. As we reported yesterday they were bringing back the player that was on their practice squad for most of the past two years. He had been with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. They have also signed free agent CB Antwain Spann. They made room for the two players by releasing K/P Dan Urrego and injured DT Ventrell Jenkins. Spann was with the Patriots the past three years appearing on special teams mostly and bouncing on and off the practice squad. They may look at putting Spann at safety or cornerback. The waiving of Urrego means Brian Moorman and Rian Lindell have to take on all the punting and kicking duties. Mace was brought back because of injuries at the defensive tackle spot. Depth Chart.

Veterans Rest: The Bills held an afternoon practice session today with many notable players on the sidelines. Dick Jauron chose to rest many veterans including Terell Owens, Lee Evans, Aaron Schobel, and Terrence McGee. The coach said they just needed the day off and since they know what they can do they have the luxury to rest them. Trent Edwards got very limited work since he has thrown many balls in the first week of camp. One veteran practicing was Roscoe Parrish who left Thursday's workout after tweaking his ankle.

Mace Returning? The Toronto Globe & Mail is reporting that former Bills DL Corey Mace is leaving the CFL's Argonauts to re-join the Bills. He was on the Bills practice squad the last two years but not signed in the offseason. The Bills have not announced the deal and would have to make a roster move if he was signed since they are at the roster limit of 80.

Hawthorne Activated: The Bills have another wide receiver in their arsenal as they have activated C.J. Hawthorne from the active PUP list and he's now eligible to practice with the team. To make room the team waived P.K. Sam who was battling a minor quad injury. He was placed on the waived/injured list on Wednesday. Since nobody claimed him the Bills got his rights back and released him.

Jersey Unveiled: The team held their 50th anniversary celebration after last night's practice. They played a 50th anniversary video then unveiled the 50th anniversary throwback jerseys. The jerseys were modeled on stage by Trent Edwards, Lee Evans, Terrell Owens, Chris Kelsay, Brian Moorman, Paul Pozluszny, and Donte Whitner. The night was closed with a fireworks show.

Night Practice: It was a packed house for last night's practice that was cut a bit short by the 50th anniversary celebration. Eric Wood hit the field for the first time. Wood admitted to being a little rusty but said he was excited to be there. The only new injury was suffered by Roscoe Parrish who tweaked an ankle but there was no further information available. Sitting out the workout were Copeland Bryan, Dustin Fox, Ventrell Jenkins, Steve Johnson, John McCargo, Shawn Nelson, and Marcus Smith. Nelson is expected back in the next day or so. Injury Page.

Anniversary Celebration Tonight: The Bills will officially kickoff their 50th anniversary season with a celebration after tonight's practice. The players will model their new thorwback jerseys on a stage that is being setup. It will be followed by a fireworks display and a performance by the Empire Statesmen Drum and Bugle Corps. Practice runs from 7:10pm to 9:05pm.

Byrd Had Surgery: Reports have surfaced that the reason Jairus Byrd was placed on the non-football injury list was because he had an operation to repair a sports hernia two weeks ago. The recovery period for such an operation is around 4-8 weeks. He is supposedly on the shorter end of that range and could be ready to practice in two weeks. Byrd missed all the offseason activities because of the late final exam schedule at Oregon. All those factors along with the holdout will probably hurt Byrd's chances of making an impact early in the season. In other injury news, Leodis McKelvin left yesterday's workout with a strained quad that he considered minor. Injury Page.

Byrd, Wood Deals Done: The Bills have announced that they have officially signed two more draft picks as they have come to terms with Eric Wood and Jairus Byrd. Wood is ready to practice immediately and should be on the field tomorrow. Byrd was placed on the active non-football injury list which means he's active but not ready to practice just yet. The Bills opened up a roster spot by placing WR P.K. Sam on the waived/injured list.

Wet Practice: Today's lone practice session was rather uneventful with a small crowd on hand for the workout under rainy conditions. The defense had the better of the offense most of the game according to the team's website. Dustin Fox was added to the list of banged up players not practicing. He sat along with John McCargo, Ventrell Jenkins, Copeland Bryan, Shawn Nelson, Marcus Smith, and Steve Johnson.

Closing In On Signing Byrd: Russ Brandon was on Sirius NFL radio this morning and said that although Eric Wood is not signed yet they expect a deal done at anytime with him and 2nd round pick Jairus Byrd. He hopes to have them both in camp in the next day or so. He said they are still working on Aaron Maybin but indicated they still have a ways to go to sign him.

Bills Sign WR: The Bills addressed their depleted receiving corps by signing free agent Shaine Smith. He was with the Rams during last year's training camp. He spent the 2007 season on the Jets practice squad after graduating from Hofstra. Depth Chart.

Sam Leaves Early: P.K. Sam left practice early with a quad injury. The team is getting hit hard at the wide receiver position as he joins Steve Johnson, C.J. Hawthorne, and James Hardy on the shelf. The team reportedly took a look at veteran Reche Caldwell on Tuesday. His agent said the workout went well and he hopes to hear from the team soon. Also sitting out practice yesterday were Ventrell Jenkins and Shawn Nelson. Injury Page.

Wood Agrees To Deal: Several reports say that the Bills have agreed to a deal with their 2nd first round pick Eric Wood. The Bills have not confirmed the deal but Dick Jauron said after last night's practice that the two sides are very close and they hope to have him in camp today. Terms were still being finalized last night on what is believed to be a five year deal. That leaves just top pick Aaron Maybin and the first of the two 2nd round picks, Jairus Byrd unsigned. Byrd is an interesting case since many picks around his slot have signed so a deal should be able to be worked out fairly easily.

McCargo Sidelined; Stroud Returns: John McCargo missed practice last night due to a minor hamstring injury according to Dick Jauron. Marcus Stroud returned ahead of schedule from his minor hamstring injury. He took part in practice last night. He was expected to miss up to a week but missed only two days. Injury Page.

Tuesday July 28 2009

DiGiorgio Back: John DiGiorgio is back with the Bills two days after being waived. He cleared waivers and was placed on the Reserve/PUP list keeping his rights with the Bills since he has one year left on his contract after this season. He will not be eligible to play this year as he will recover from micro fracture surgery two weeks ago as his torn ACL did not heal properly. Front Office.

No Vick In Buffalo: Russ Brandon squashed growing rumors about the Bills possible interest in Michael Vick. He told the Buffalo News that he likes the roster as it is now and they have no interest at this time. With the vocal support of Terell Owens, Drayton Florence, and George Wilson some thought the Bills may go after him.

Hairston Waived: A tough break for RB Justise Hairston who was placed on the waived/injured list by the Bills today two days after injuring his knee during warmups on Saturday. He is no longer on the team. He never even got a chance to practice with the team. Injury Page.

First Night Practice Today: The Bills have a morning walk through along with meetings and weight lifting today. They then have their first of seven night practices during training camp just past 7pm tonight. Tickets are required for tonight's workout the morning walk thru, as always, is not open to the public. The team is scheduled for 45 minute morning walk thrus the rest of the week.

Monday July 27, 2009

Johnson Out Indefinitely: Steve Johnson is out indefinitely after suffering an injury to his rib cartilage during yesterday's practice. He is very sore right now and isn't expected back anytime soon. Copeland Bryan was helped off the field today as we reported earlier. He has a hamstring injury and it's too early to know the severity of the injury. Injury Page.

Wilson In Attendance: Owner Ralph Wilson made his first trip to training camp during today's session in pads. He addressed the players at the close of practice. The team went through a walk through again against a 3-4 defense. Pads were popping throughout the practice. Steve Johnson did not practice and Copeland Bryan had to be helped off the field after an injury according to the Rochester D&C.

Bills In Pads Today: The Bills will hold only one practice today but it will be the first one with pads on as they hit the practice field just after 11am today. Marcus Stroud will remain sidelined with his hamstring injury but other than that they appeared to get out of the first two days ok. The linebackers will be in the autograph tent after the practice session.
