NEWS ARCHIVES - APR 15TH - APR 21ST, 2013 PREVIOUS WEEK

Schedule Releases As Draft Prep Continues

Schedule Tidbits: The Bills will be playing three games against teams that are coming off of bye weeks week 7 at Miami, week 8 at New Orleans and week 11 versus the Jets. The Bills bye is the last week of the bye weeks it is the latest they have had a bye since the single bye weeks started. They open and close with the Patriots just like they did 10 years ago in 2003 when they beat them at home in the opener and closed with a loss by an identical 31-0 score. You can take a little over a week vacation in Florida in December and take in road games in Jacksonville and Tampa Bay. The league must have been listening to the Bills complaints about too many home games in December because the only Ralph Wilson Stadium game in the final month is against Miami. The game in Toronto is against Atlanta and marks the fourth straight game there against an NFC opponent. The Bills open with two straight home games for the first time since 2000 and have three of the first four at the Ralph.

Schedule Released: NFL schedule has been released. The Bills will play their first two games at home as they open and close with the Patriots. The lone primetime game is in Cleveland on Thursday night Oct. 3rd. They will play Atlanta in Toronto on the first day of December and will only play one game at the Ralph in December against Miami. The big road game in New Orleans is October 27th. 2013 Bills Schedule.

Bills Sign Five Tryout Players: 5 of the 11 tryout players at this week's veteran mini camp have reportedly been signed by the Bills. Former UNLV RB Frank Summers has been signed to a one year deal. He is a big bruising running back who was with the Steelers and is expected to serve as a fullback. They also added LB Kourtnei Brown from Clemson, DE Jamie Blatnick from Oklahoma State, San Diego State Punter Brian Stahovich, and K Chris Koepplin. Stahovich has a big leg and will be legitimate competition to Shawn Powell. Blatnick spent some time with the Broncos last summer and on their practice squad last season. Brown was on the Redskins practice squad, and Koepplin spent some time with the Patriots training camp. Front Office Page.

Bills Wrap Up Temp Camp: The Bills have wrapped up their first veteran mini camp. It was voluntary but every player was there except Jairus Byrd who has yet to sign his franchise tag. Stevie Johnson sat out again today and missed all team drills in the camp with a minor strain in his back. He did some work on the side. It was an up temp camp and Doug Marrone told the media they are definitely headed in the right direction. Marrone said if he's not tired after a practice he has done the team a disservice. According to media reports, he even lined up at center on a few plays. The coach was busy trying to establish relationships with the players as he roamed all over the field. He was impressed how the quarterbacks handled the volume of information they had to process. The new defense has Mario Williams playing many different positions. He doesn't know where he will line up from one down to the next.

Stevie Has Back Strain: Stevie Johnson has not practiced this week during the first two days of the voluntary veteran minicamp. He suffered a mild back strain during individual drills on Tuesday. He will get looked at again by the team today in hopes of hitting the field in the final day of the camp today.

Schedule To Be Released: Time to make your fall plans as the NFL will release the schedule at 8pm tonight. We will have the Bills complete schedule shortly after it comes out on the right side of our homepage and our schedule page.

Nix On Byrd: Buddy Nix said during the pre draft luncheon that the team has had some contact with Jairus Byrd and they are trying to get a long term deal done. He is the lone veteran not at the voluntary mini camp that started today.

Pre Draft Luncheon: The Bills held their annual pre draft luncheon for the media today. It is a usual game of cat and mouse as Buddy Nix said he wanted to give the media information to do their job but not enough that it tips their hand. He said he does feel there is a franchise QB that will be available at 8th overall and says the class is better than people think. He feels there are two to three franchise guys in the draft and as many as seven that can win in the NFL. Nix doesn't anticipate much of a chance to move down but they are "open for business" and will take any and all calls. Scout Doug Majewski on Ryan Nassib: "Strong arm, touch, and timing are strengths. "You look at the body of work, lots of factors go into it." He has been on the team's radar before they hired Doug Marrone. Nix said losing Andy Levitre and Chad Rinehart did not change their draft plans and he feels good about the guards they have on the roster right now. The signing of Kevin Kolb didn't change them either but it makes him "sleep better at night". A scout called WR Cordarelle Patterson "a freak of an athlete." Nix confirmed that they will move Aaron Williams to safety this year. Doug Whaley said that WR Tavon Austin is high on their radar. Nix loves Nigel Bradham in this defense saying he fits great and can fly. They are also excited to finally have a healthy Marcus Easley.

Voluntary Mini Camp: The Bills begin a voluntary veteran mini camp tomorrow that will last three days. This extra camp is allowed because they have a new coaching staff. It is likely almost all veterans will be in attendance. One player that likely won't be there is Jairus Byrd according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. He is one of only two franchise players in the league that has yet to sign his tag. Unless he signs it, or a long term deal is worked out, he likely won't participate in the camp. He has been silent since the Bills have placed the tag on him.
