NEWS ARCHIVES - SEP 15TH - SEP 21ST, 2014 PREVIOUS WEEK

Bills Suffer First Loss Of The Season

Gameday Grades: The defense was dominated by the high flying Chargers offense until they tigthened up when it was too late. The offense waited too long to move the football as most of their yardage came in garbage time. It is all reflected in our weekly player grades. Gameday Grades.

Bills Lose To Chargers: The great start to the football season came to a crashing halt as the visiting San Diego Chargers controlled the game throughout and sent the Bills to their first defeat of the season 22-10 at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Philip Rivers threw two touchdown passes in building a 20-3 lead early in the third quarter as they used ball control to dominate the football game. Rivers finished 18 of 25 for 256 yards. Donald Brown ran the ball 31 times for just 62 yards. The Bills lone touchdown was a Fred Jackson 11 yard score on a screen pass. Dan Carpenter added a 45 yard field goal on a very windy day. Nick Novak hit two field goals for the Chargers and they added a safety when EJ Manuel was called for intentional grounding in the end zone. The offense seemed out of sync throughout as there were little holes for the running game and Manuel didn't seem to be on the same page as his receivers for most of the game. He finished 23 of 39 for 238 yards with many of those stats coming in garbage time. There were no turnovers for either team in this game. Bills Blitz.

Many Players Banged Up In Loss: Chris Williams left the game in the first half after re-aggravating his back injury. He was replaced in the lineup by Kraig Urbik. Marcus Easley hurt his left knee when it got bent backwards. He did not finish the game as he was helped off with the help of trainers and teammates before being carted off. Da'Norris Searcy left the game with an ankle injury and Aaron Williams went off with a lower leg injury in the fourth quarter but returned to the game. Marquise Goodwin took a really hard shot trying to make a catch and was on the ground for several minutes before walking off under his own power and he returned to the game. Fred Jackson came off in the fourth quarter with an apparent left arm issue but quickly returned to the game. Stephon Gilmore was shaken up in the first half but also quickly returned to the game. Injury Page.

Gameday Inactives: As expected Keith Rivers is inactive again with his groin injury. He was listed as doubtful. Randell Johnson is also inactive after being ruled out Friday with his knee injury. Lee Smith is active for the first time all year after being out with a toe injury. The five players that were listed as probable on the injury report are all active including Robert Woods who hurt his ankle during Wednesday's practice. Healthy inactives are Cyril Richardson, Cyrus Kouandjio, Bryce Brown, Chris Gragg, and Ross Cockrell.

Stormy Weather Possible: It looks like weather will be a factor in today's game between the Bills and the Chargers. There is an 80% chance of thundershowers during the day. Chances of stroms are expected to diminish a bit as the game progresses. The wind will be out of the WSW at about 13mph. The temperature during the game is not likely to reach 70°.

Woods Misses Practice: Robert Woods was not on the practice field when the Bills hit the field today. He was limited on Wednesday after he injured his ankle in practice. Doug Marrone said he wouldn't be ready to play if there was a game today but there is optimism that he will be ready for Sunday. Randell Johnson missed practice for a second straight day and Chris Williams was limited as they were resting his back. Stefan Charles was limited for a second straight day whle Lee Smith and Sammy Watkins practiced fully for a second straight day. The team also announced Andre Reed will be honored at halftime and get his Hall of Fame ring. Reed led the charge on to the field last week that honor goes to Lee Evans this week.

Chargers Preview: The Bills remain home at the Ralph for a second straight week as the high flying San Diego Chargers make the long trek East from the West Coast for a big early season AFC showdown. Should be a tough matchup but the Bills will have the fans in a frenzy once again after their 2-0 start that has them in first place in the division. Game Preview.

Johnson Lone Player To Sit: The Bills were back on the practice field today preparing for the Chargers game on Sunday. Randell Johnson was the lone player to sit with a knee injury suffered on Sunday. Keith Rivers was back on the field on a limited basis. He said he felt pretty good and is progressing well. He considers himself day to day. Robert Woods was limited with an ankle injury and Stefan Charles was limited with his hip injury. Lee Smith practiced fully for the first time since injuring his toe in the preseason. Sammy Watkins once again practiced fully but his ribs seem to still be an issue. Injury Page.

Unanimous Approval: The NFL Finance Committee gave unanimous approval to Terry and Kim Pegula as the next owners of the Buffalo Bills. The Pegulas made a brief statement after the meeting but did not take any questions. They said they will not consider themselves NFL owners until after the deal is approved by all the owners. That will happen in their fall meetings on October 7th and 8th. NFL Executive VP Eric Grubman said this is a huge step in the process. He also said that everyone involved in the sale has a lot to proud of at the way they handled the process. He feels the Pegulas have done a nice job of respecting the process and not releasing too much information.

Bills Tickets Going Fast: The 2-0 start and the longtime future secured has helped the ticket office. The Bills announced that the next three home games has only club seats left which means there will be no blackouts at least during the first half of the season. Of the final four home games, the December date with the Packers is closing in on a sellout and ticket sales have increased for the other three home games as well against Kansas City, The Jets, and Cleveland. The team advises if you want non club seats to those games get them soon.

McNair On Pegula: NFL finance committee chair Bob McNair said Terry Pegula is certainly passionate about football and Buffalo. He feels the Bills need to stay put but adds a new stadium will be needed. McNair said Pegula is certainly open to the idea of a new place and will work very hard to accomplish it. A new stadium is not a big topic in this meeting. Before the meeting McNair said he doesn't see any problem in Pegula getting approval.

Spiller Honored: C.J. Spiller became the second Bill in as many weeks to win the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honor. Spiller was honored because of his 102 yard kickoff return for a touchdown that was huge in stemming off a Miami rally in Sunday's game.

Finance Committee Meeting Today: The Pegulas and members of Ralph Wilson's trust are expected in New York City today for a meeting of the NFL finance committee where they are expected to decide whether or not they will reccommend the Pegulas for ownership of the Bills. At the meeting the Pegulas are expected to tell the committee they are prepared to pay for the team with a wire transfer for the entire $1.4 Billion. They are expected to get the recommendation easily.

Meeks On IR; Dean Signed: The Bills have placed Jonathan Meeks on injured reserve ending his season. He suffered a neck injury in the preseason and never could get back on the field despite practicing on a limited basis. His spot on the roster was taken by LB Larry Dean. He signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and played in 48 games over three years mostly on special teams with Minnesota. Front Office Page.

Bills Fairly Injury Free: There was a rash of injuries in the NFL during week two action but the Bills came away relatively unscathed. On Monday, Doug Marrone only reported two injuries, Stefan Charles suffered a hip injury and Randell Johnson injured his knee. The coach said Sammy Watkins had just soreness after the game as he battles his painful rib injury. Keith Rivers was due to test his injured groin yesterday and today to see if he's ready to practice at all this week. Injury Page.
