Bills Lose Out On McCown

McCown To Cleveland: The Bills lost out on Josh McCown as he agreed to a three year deal with the Cleveland Browns tonight. Reports say that it was a very close decision between the Bills and the Browns but he decided to go to Cleveland leaving the Bills still searching for another quarterback.

Bills, Browns Bidding: Reports out of Buffalo and Cleveland say the two teams are involved in the bidding to land Josh McCown. The free agent wants to be on a new team before free agency starts on March 10th and according to the reports he would like to make a decision as early as today.

Bills Talking Deal With McCown: Vic Carucci reports that the Bills are in discussions with Josh McCown on a possible contract. McCown visited with the Bills 10 days ago and completed visits with the Bears and Jets during the combine. He also visited the Browns for two days this week. The sources told Carucci it is unknown if any of the other suitors are also making an offer. McCown wants to have a new team by as early as tomorrow. McCown has a history with offensive coordinator Greg Roman, quarterbacks coach David Lee, and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer.

Spiller Keeps Door Open: C.J. Spiller appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Tuesday and said he would like to return to the Bills but the ball is in their court. He did say he will weigh all his options and wants to go to a place where he can win and is wanted. He also wants to go to a place where he is a good fit. He went on to praise Greg Roman, Rex Ryan, and new Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Doug Whaley said at the combine last week that they would like to keep Spiller and have exchanged proposals but their is a gap between the two sides. There were conflicting rumors on Tuesday that the Bills are interested in trading for Rams QB Sam Bradford but sources told Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News that the Yahoo sports report is not true.

Hughes Talks Continue: Doug Whaley made the rounds at the combine today first talking on WGR than meeting with the Buffalo area media. Whaley said they they have exchanged contract proposals with the agent for Jerry Hughes and the two sides talked last night. It sounds like talks are progressing. Whaley said they want a longterm deal with Hughes so they don't want to use the franchise tag. Whaley also said they also exchanged proposals with C.J. Spiller's agent but the two sides are not close hinting he will likely hit the market. Whaley also feels it won't be easy to keep Da'Norris Searcy since they have a lot of money wrapped up in Aaron Williams at the safety position. If they can't keep him Duke Williams, Jonathan Meeks, and Baccari Rambo would fight for the starting job. The team also would have a different plan for Brandon Spikes than he has for himself so he will likely leave. They do want to re-sign Marcus Easley because he is a special teams ace. They have not approached Mario Williams about restructuring his contract yet but do have it in their back pocket if they need him too. They also will make a new deal for Marcell Dareus a priority after they deal with their free agents.

Scouting Combine Underway: Coaches, scouts, agents, and general managers gather in Indianapolis for the scouting combine. Everyone will be getting a closer look at the top prospects in the upcoming draft while agents look for deals for their clients. Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News reports that Russ Brandon and Jim Overdorf will meet with the agents for all their big free agents while in Indianapolis to see if there is common ground on new deals before the players hit the market on March 10th. The time period to place franchise and transition tags on players is now open.

Bills Release LB Rivers: The Bills made a roster move on Tuesday as they released LB Keith Rivers. He signed a two year deal before last season but was quickly relegated to the bench because of the emergence of Preston Brown at linebacker. He also doesn't likely fit the scheme being introduced by Rex Ryan. The release of Rivers saves the Bills $1.7 Million in cap space while leaving the Bills with $500,000 in dead money on their books. McCown Leaves Without A Deal: Josh McCown visited with the Bills today but contrary to reports that a deal may be imminent he left town without a contract. ESPN reported he wants to see his other options and gather all the information necessary to make a decision before signing with a team. He is expected to visit with a few other teams before making a decision on where he will play next year.

Bills Looking To Sign McCown: ESPN is reporting that the Bills are visiting with Josh McCown today and are looking to sign him. There was a picture released on twitter of McCown with Greg Roman at last night's Sabres game. McCown was released by Tampa Bay last week and is free to sign with any team. He will meet with club officials today and both sides reportedly want to make a deal. He started 11 games last year for the Bucs and threw 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions with a passer rating of 70.5.
