Bills Take Washington In 3rd Round: The Bills had holes in the front seven and filled them in a big way with picking front seven players with their first three picks in the draft. They added Ohio State defensive linemen Adolphus Washington in the third round with the 80th overall pick in the draft. They took him even though his college teammate Braxton Miller was there and Michigan St. QB Connor Cook was still on the board. The passing on QBs in the first two days has to be a vote of confidence for Tyrod Taylor. Washington his expected to compete for a job right away and fills the third major hole along the front seven as 1st round pick Shaq Lawson and 2nd rounder Reggie Ragland filled the other holes. Urban Meyer referred to Washington as a defensive end in a defensive tackle's body. He is considered a solid pass rusher who needs work against the run. He did not play in Ohio State's bowl game this past year because of an arrest. He called it a mistake that he has learned from. Draft Capsule.

Washington Conference Call: Adolphus WashingtonHe is very excited to play for the Buffalo Bills and to work with the coaching staff that gave him some good advice when he met with them. He doesn't care if he plays the 5 or the 3 technique he will play where they want him to play. He feels he can get after the passer pretty well and hopes he can help them right away that way and then work in against the run. He thought his meeting with the Bills was the best one he had. Coach Ryan said he'd probably take him and he would come in and play right away.

Whaley On Washigton: They felt he was one of the best interior defensive linemen in the draft. He has things he needs to improve on like dealing with double teams. Whaley said he will come in and compete to start since they have holes. Whaley said he may play the 5 technique or the nose because he has a lot of versatility. Whaley said it would be gameplan specific to see where Washington, Kyle Williams, and Marcel Dareus would play across the line. Whaley admitted they had big holes on the front seven so they had to fill them and he's very excited that they were able to fill them better than they thought they would. Like his first two picks, Whaley said he didn't think Washington would be there with the 80th pick in the draft. Whaley admitted they may not go for best player available tomorrow as they may go to fill holes. He said a QB is still on the docket and they are still leaning towards drafting a QB on day three.

Ragland Conference Call: Reggie Ragland is very thankful and blessed to play for Rex Ryan who is a defensive minded coach. He called his pre draft meeting with Ryan as laid back and all business on the field. He showed the coaches he can regurgitate back to them everything they asked him during the pre draft meetings. He will come in and work hard to earn his playing time. He feels he can easily play on the weakside in the 3-4 and he isn't scared of competition. He is called a throwback linebacker and said it is a complement since he's a tough player who is smart and can call out defenses. His one health concern is an enlarged aorta but most teams don't expect it to be a problem with his playing career. He just found out about it at the combine and will see a specialist after the draft. He knows he's athletic enough to be a three down linebacker even if critics say he isn't. Draft Capsule.

Bills Trade Up To Fill Another Hole: The Bills were able to get a player some mocked to them in the first round but they had to move up eight spots in the 2nd round to get him. The Bills took Alabama ILB Reggie Ragland with the 41st pick in the draft. They made a trade with the Bears to move up from the 18th pick in the 2nd round to the 10th pick to fill the 2nd hole in the front seven in this draft. The move cost them the first of the two 4th round picks which was the 117th overall pick and next year's 4th round which was a steep price to pay according to the draft value chart but they got the man they really wanted. He's a versatile player who they think can play the Wil in the Bills 3-4 next to Preston Brown and will be penciled in as a day one starter. He works off his blocks well and is a solid tackler and very active on the field. May only project to a two down player but they can afford to get that in a 2nd round pick.

Whaley On Ragland: Doug Whaley said Reggie Ragland was so high on their board they would have taken him at 19 as he was 2nd on the board at that spot behind their first round pick Shaq Lawson. They made a concerted effort to go up and get him trying to trade up as early as Cleveland's top pick in the 2nd round before finding a partner in Chicago. Ragland and Preston Brown will be on the field at the same time. Ragland is 258 pounds and runs in the 4.6s. Many thought he was a true Mike but they think he can play the Wil while Brown stays at the Mike. The value of the remaining quarterbacks were not worth taking one there. Whaley calls Ragland a leader and a winner. The first two guys they picked are tough physical love football guys that have won a lot at the collegiate level. With the expertise of their coaches they feel he can play Wil and they will see if he can play three downs. He was versatile at Alabama coming off the edge at times while playing the Mike and the Wil. They ran a similiar defense in Alabama so they think he will pick it up quickly. They are excited to get the two guys they coveted in the first round at areas of need. They never thought they would get Ragland and Shaq Lawson. Whaley thinks Ragland is very athletic and doesn't want people to let his size fool you.

Tarpley, Maxwell Released: The Bills officially released A.J. Tarpley who announced he is retiring earlier this month. Lawson Press Conference: The Bills introduced Shaq Lawson in a press conference this afternoon at One Bills Drive. They quickly introduced the newest Bill who said his first impression of Buffalo is great. He experienced a lot seeing the city for the first time. When he was still on the board at #19 he said "Rex come get me." Lawson feels great being apart of his aggressive defense. He first met Rex as a freshman when he and his son were moving into the dorms. Rex said to him maybe he can be a first round pick someday. During his Pro Day Rex asked him if he's ready to be a Bill. He had a great vibe and felt really comfortable when he met with the Bills. He's just ready to play, he knows they will do a lot of different things with them and he's ready to do what is needed to help the team. On his shoulder he said again he's 100% and ready to play football. Jacksonville was the only team that flagged him at the combine. Teams said his range of motion has improved and he doesn't feel he would need surgery and any point. He did wear a brace the last couple of games his junior year. He will have an impact right away and help lead the team to the playoffs. He is a guy with great character and will not waste his opportunity with off the field issues. He can't embarrass the program or himself. He was the first player taken by the Bills in the first round that didn't come in for a pre-draft visit in a few years. Possible Players For Bills Tonight: The Bills may see the glut in the front seven of this draft may allow them to fill a hole at defensive tackle or inside linebacker in round two now that their number one priority of getting an edge rusher is taken care. Players still on the board include Shaq Lawson's partner in crime in Clemson Kevin Dodd, Mississippi State's Chris Jones or Alabama tackles Jarran Reed and A'Shawn Robinson. At linebacker everyone is talking about Myles Jack still being on the board with his micofacture knee issue. Reggie Ragland is another Alabama product who would look good in the middle of the Bills defense on first and second down. Hybrid Safety/LB Su'a Cravens is someone the Bills may hope fall to them in round three. WRs who are available include Ohio State's Braxton Miller and Michael Thomas. QBs available include Connor Cook, Christian Hackenberg, Dak Prescott, and Cardale Jones. Some of these QBs may be there in round three. Cook will likely be off the board by the time the Bills pick in round two.

Day Two: The NFL Draft continues tonight at 7pm with rounds two and three. Several top defensive tackles and middle linebackers remain available but may not be there when the team picks 18th in the 2nd round. Only three quarterbacks are off the board but another couple may be gone before the Bills pick. Reports say the Cowboys desperately tried to trade back into the first round to get Paxton Lynch including trying to make a deal with the Bills before he went to Denver. Look for Dallas to possibly take a QB with the third pick in the 2nd round. Cleveland, San Francisco, and New Orleans all can possibly take a QB before the Bills are back on the clock again.
