Bills Continue Preparations For The Draft

Pre Draft Luncheon: Today Doug Whaley and his top scouts held their annual pre-draft luncheon for the media. This is the time when they put out false information to throw other team's off of their draft plans. Several tidbits did come out however. Whaley said it is very, very good possibility they will draft a quarterback but when is unknown. He did say that Tyrod Taylor will be the number one quarterback this year even if they draft a QB in the first round. He also feels they are more likely to move down the draft board instead of up it. They feel the draft his deep at DL and QB. As far as the heirachy goes, the Pegulas have the final call during the draft but they have never vetoed a move. Whaley said they do bring a different perspective to the discussions and bring up stuff they never talked about before. The team won't know the status of Seantrel Henderson before the draft and they are keeping in house the reasons they released Tony Steward. The team brought in 25 or 26 of a possible 30 pre-draft visitors and said they are now done with hosting draftees. At linebacker they are looking for quicker guys over bigger guys especially with their division rivals using three wide receivers most of the time.

Whaley On WGR: Doug Whaley was on the Howard Simon show this morning on WGR. On rumors that the Bills were intersted in moving up the #2 spot in the draft he said that they have proven in the past that they are open to anything. He also said it is possible that the team will be able to extend Cordy Glenn, Stephon Gilmore, and Tyrod Taylor before the season starts without making any more cuts since the first year cap figures of big deals are usually small. He said he's more optimistic than pessimistic that he will be able to get deals done with Glenn and Gilmore. Numbers wise getting defensive line guys is a priority and they love the depth at the position in this year's draft saying they can get quality guys into the sixth round. They will look to match the talent of a player with the value. If they fail to do that the chances of making a mistake goes way up that is why they stay true to the board. He called the receiver position slim this year in the draft and the linebacker class is the most top heavy of any position. The depth overall in the draft has them excited especially since they have an extra 4th and extra 6th round pick. On the QB position, Whaley feels Jared Goff is more plug and play ready than Carson Wentz. He feels Christian Hackenberg has unbelievable size and arm talent which you can't coach. They feel they have accomplished what they wanted to in free agency but feel there will be another wave when players are released after the draft.

Bills Release Steward: The Bills have released LB Tony Steward. The player showed shock in a twitter message before thanking Buffalo for his time there in a second tweet. The team made it official a short time later. The move leaves them with just three middle linebackers with Preston Brown, recently signed Zach Brown, and little used Kevin Reddick. Steward was a 6th round draft pick last year and saw limited playing time while battling injuries. The move is a surprise because of the lack of numbers at the position. Depth Chart.

Day 2 Of Offseason Program Today: The Bills are back in the fieldhouse today for day 2 of the offseason conditioning program. Many players wore shirts that said "All In", Rex Ryan admitted he stole the mantra from the head coach at Clemson. Aaron Williams was on the field and he no longer is too concerned that his neck injury will cause him to end his career. He did re-iterate that he won't know for sure until he hits somebody. Rex Ryan is also optimistic about his safety being ok. Ronald Darby was cleared to return to workouts after having offseason hernia surgery. Marcell Dareus was cleared after having foot surgery. Robert Woods (groin surgery) and Jairus Wynn (knee surgery) were also cleared to workout. Marcus Easley, Stephon Gilmore, Jerry Hughes, and Kyle Williams were not cleared. Easley looked pretty good moving around however after suffering a grusome knee injury late last season. Williams is improving but not cleared after knee surgery last season. Hughes had wrist surgery while Gilmore had his shoulder repaired. Injury Page.

Players On The Field: The players were on the field inside the fieldhouse this morning going through drills. According to various media tweets Sammy Watkins, Seantrel Henderson, and Kyle Williams were the notable absentees from day one of the voluntary camp. Williams is recovering from surgery that cost him most of last season. Corbin Bryant was on the field as he signed his one year tender before the first workout. The team has also announced the release of CB Cam Thomas.

Offseason Program Begins: The players are back in Orchard Park today as the team begins their offseason conditioning program. It is a voluntary program so not every player will be their everyday but attendance is normally close to 100%. Today begins phase one of the program and no on the field work is allowed. There will be meetings in the morning followed by workouts in the weight room along with some teaching of techniques. Jeremy White of WGR is reporting that Tyrod Taylor is in town and is expected to attend the beginning of the program.
