Bills Look Ahead To Next Year

Whaley At Senior Bowl: Doug Whaley took a few moments away from the Senior Bowl practices to speak to the media on a variety of subjects regarding the Bills. The GM said he wouldn't hesitate to draft a quarterback early in the draft considering that the top two quarterbacks are in the final year of their contracts. He said they have started the process in getting free agents Richie Incognito and Cordy Glenn under contract. Hesaid head negotiator Jim Overdorf will reach out to the agents for the two players. He said Aaron Williams is ready to go and reiterated early comments that they don't believe his neck injury is career threatening. He said he could have played if the team made the playoffs. Kyle Williams may not be ready for offseason workouts but should be good to go in time for training camp. The team doesn't know about the health of Percy Harvin but if he is healthy they do want him back.

Incognito To Pro Bowl: Richie Incognito will join Tyrod Taylor and Eric Wood in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl afterall. Last night it was announced that Incognito will join is linemate and quarterback after Cardinals guard Mike Iupati who decided not to go. Three of the team's four alternates are going to play in the game. Teams will be picked tomorrow night. Taylor and Wood are serving as replacements for Carolina QB Cam Newton and C Ryan Kalil who are Super Bowl bound. Marcel Dareus is the only Bills alternate not going. LeSean McCoy was the lone representative originally but he will not play because of his knee injury. This is the second Pro Bowl for Incognito who was rated one of the top guards in the league this year. Wood is the first Bills center to go since the late Kent Hull in 1990 and Taylor is the first Bills QB since Drew Bledsoe in 2002.

Bills Hire Coach: The Bills made history with little fanfare last night announcing in a press release that they have hired Kathryn Smith as the new Quality Control Special Teams coach replacing Michael Hamlin who was released earlier in the month. She becomes the first full-time NFL female coach. The Cardinals had a female part time linebackers coach during training camp last year. Rex Ryan consulted with Bruce Arians before the hire and said in a release, "I consulted with Bruce Arians on this since he was really the first NFL head coach to make this kind of move when he hired a female linebackers coach through the summer. You can see the success some of these young ladies are having in the coaching profession, such as the young lady that is an assistant to Coach (Gregg) Popovich at the San Antonio Spurs, and realize how exciting this is for women like Kathryn Smith as well as the Bills organization.” Smith has worked for Ryan the past seven years, six with the Jets and last year with the Bills. She has been his Administrative Assistant the past two years. She began her NFL career with the Jets in 2003 as a gameday/special events intern. She stayed with the Jets for 12 years becoming a college scout intern in 2005 and a player personnel assistant in 2007.

Statement On Historic Hiring: Rex Ryan released a statement on this historic hiring that said, "Kathryn Smith has done an outstanding job in the seven years that she has worked with our staff. She certainly deserves this promotion based on her knowledge and strong commitment, just to name a couple of her outstanding qualities, and I just know she’s going to do a great job serving in the role of Quality Control-Special Teams. Kathryn has been working in a football administrative role and assisted the assistant coaches for years. She has proven that she’s ready for the next step, so I’m excited and proud for her with this opportunity. She will work with Danny Crossman and Eric Smith involving a number of responsibilities.”Front Office Page.

McCoy Not Pro Bowl Bound: As of now the Bills will not be represented in the Pro Bowl in Hawaii a week from Sunday. LeSean McCoy was the lone Bill voted in to the game but he has backed out because of his late season knee injury. He will be replaced by Chris Ivory of the Jets. The Bills still have a chance to be represented as Tyrod Taylor, Richie Incognito, and Eric Wood are alternates.

Bills Sign RB: The Bills have added a running back to their roster by signing former Florida St. product James Wilder Jr. to a futures contract. He is a big, bruising back who spent the past two seasons on the Bengals practice squad after signing with them as an undrafted free agent in 2014. In college he appeared in 39 games rushing for 1,375 yards with 20 TDs. Depth Chart.

Bills Special Teams Middle Of The Pack: The Dallas Morning News released their annual study ranking the special teams in the NFL. It comes as a surprise to most that the Bills ranked right in the middle as they had the 16th ranked special teams in the league. Holding them back was Dan Carpenter leading the league in missed extra points and horrid play from the return game. That was balanced out by solid punting from Colton Schmidt who finished 7th in the league in net average and the coverage units which ranked first in kickoff coverage and average drive start after kickoffs thanks to solid kicks from specialist Jordan Gay.
