Bills Lose Opener 13-7

Sunday September 11, 2016

Gameday Grades: Everyone was worried about the communication on the defensive side of the ball but it was the offense that struggled with communication and execution while the defense was the reason they were even in this game near the end. Gameday Grades.

Bills Blitz: Joe Flacco hit Mike Wallace for a 66 yard touchdown in the second quarter and that was about all the fireworks in this defensive struggle as the Ravens beat the Bills 13-7 on opening day in Baltimore. That score gave them a 10-0 lead that would hold up. The Bills lone touchdown was a half yard plunge on a fourth down run by LeSean McCoy. Justin Tucker hit field goals from 50 and 37 yards out while Dan Carpenter missed his only attempt from 49 yards out. Tyrod Taylor had a rough homecoming throwing for just 111 yards on 15 of 22 passes thrown. Bills Blitz.

Injury Update: Cordy Glenn and Jim Dray both suffered ankle injuries two plays apart when the Bills were going in for the first touchdown. They were both listed as questionable to return then Glenn was quickly ruled out. Dray did return later on. Jerel Worthy suffered a knee injury in the final minutes. He told Jay Skurski that x-rays were negative and he should be fine. He had it wrapped heavily after the game. Injury Page.

Gameday Inactives: Colt Anderson and Kevon Seymour lead the list of inactives as they were ruled out on Friday with injuries. Two of the three players listed as questionable are also inactive as Jonathan Williams and Cardale Jones will sit. Williams practiced fully all week so it's likely a healthy scratch. Jones would have been inactive as the third QB anyway. The other inactives are Walter Powell, Patrick Lewis, and Bryson Albright. Powell would have been a returner if not for the recent signing of Brandon Tate.

Gameday Weather: It's finally here the beginning of the season! The weather will be perfect in Baltimore for this game. The gametime temperature will 82° with winds out of the North Northwest at 10mph and the skies will be partly sunny. It will get into the mid 80s and sunnier as the game progresses.

Gay Promotion Official: The Bills made it official late this afternoon that they have promoted kickoff specialist Jordan Gay from the practice squad. He fills the open roster spot vacated by the suspension of Seantrel Henderson. Depth Chart.

Injury Report: Colt Anderson and Kevin Seymour have been ruled out of the opener with their injuries. Rex Ryan indicated that Seymour may be ready to go on Thursday night. Neither player practiced all week. Cardale Jones did not practice on Thursday and Friday and is listed as questionable. He's expected to be inactive anyway as the third quarterback the question will be if he dresses as the emergency QB or not. Jonathan Williams and Ryan Groy are also questionable but both practiced fully today. For the Ravens the three players that sat all week were ruled out and the four that practiced fully all week are listed as questionable. There are no longer probable designations on the final injury report.

Henderson Suspension Official: The Bills have been officially informed that Seantrel Henderson has been suspended four games and it starts immediately. He is eligible to come back to work on Monday October 3rd after the Patriots game. It was unlikely Henderson would have had an impact the first month of the season anyway as he rounds back into shape in his battle with Chron's Disease. He did drop his appeal and his agent released a scathing statement to Adam Schefter about the NFL's policy in his client's treatment of the disease. The team now has an open roster spot. Joe Buscaglia reports that Jordan Gay was taking kickoff reps and all signs point to him being activated to fill that spot and handle kickoffs on Sunday.

Contract Changes: ESPN's Field Yates is reporting that the team has restructured the contract of Eric Wood and extended the contract of his backup Patrick Lewis. The Wood move frees up $2.5 million in cap space for this year. They converted $3.775 million of his $4.775 million base salary to a signing bonus. he now has a voidable year on his deal for the 2018 season. Lewis who was recently claimed off of waivers signed a one year extension that gave them cap relief. He was due to get $1.671 million in base salary this season which was his restricted tender amount. His 2016 salary was reduced to a non-guaranteed $800,000 and he was given a $200,000 signing bonus. He will have a $1.2 million non-guaranteed base salary in 2017.

Bills Back Practicing: The Bills took the field this afternoon to continue preparing for the opener against Baltimore. Cardale Jones and Colt Anderson did not practice along with Kevin Seymour who was working in individual drills again. Jones is battling pain in his shoulder from the third preseason game but it's considered pain and not an injury to worry about. Jones was the only change to the injury report for the Bills and the Ravens had no changes. Injury Report.

Game Preview: We have launched our Gameday Homepage for the 2016 season and it now has the first game preview of the season as the Bills prepare for the opener against the Baltimore Ravens. Baltimore is coming off a very disappointing season in 2015 that saw them lose QB Joe Flacco with a torn ACL that his now healed. His former backup is Tyrod Taylor who makes his return to the place where he groomed his skills for four years running the scout team. This is a huge homecoming for him and Rex Ryan who thought he was slighted by the team when he was passed over for the head coaching job when he was there as the defensive coordinator before getting the job with the Jets. So there are a lot of storylines in this opener making it an intriguing matchup to start the season. Gameday Preview.

Wednesday September 7, 2016

Short Injury Report: After a summer of injuries the team is pretty healthy heading into the opener. Kevin Seymour and Colt Anderson did not practice but media reports say he appeared to do at least individual drills. Anderson hurt his foot in the preseason finale. Jonathan Williams was full go as he recovers from a rib injury. Ryan Groy has a rib injury and was limited along with Cardale Jones. For the Ravens pass rusher Elvis Dumervil is out with a foot injury. Injury Report.

Practice Squad Changes: The Bills have added two more players to the practice squad and released one they signed yesterday to give them their full compliment of 10 scout players. The team released Damian Parms from the unit and added TE Gerald Christian and DT Deandre Coleman. Christian was a 7th round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2015. Coleman was an undrafted free agent with Jacksonville in 2014 and played in five games Miami over the past two seasons.

Henderson Facing Suspension: Adam Schefter is reporting that Seantrel Henderson is facing a four game suspension from the league for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Henderson has been battling health issues relating to his Chron's Disease and he plans to appeal the suspension. Ian Rapoport is reporting the suspension is for marijuana use. It is known to help with the symptoms of Chron's Disease. If indeed he was using it for medicinal purposes and obtained it legally the league could have a fight on their hands. Rex Ryan said it's a league issue and he can't comment but the team is prepared for whatever happens.

Two More To Practice Squad: The Bills continue to fill out their practice squad by adding two more yesterday. The team added S Damian Parms and LB Carlos Fields. That leaves one open spot on the 10 man unit. Fields came into the league as an undrafted free agent in 2014 as a member of the Raiders and saw action in five games with the Redskins last year. Parms was an undrafted free agent last year with the Falcons. Practice Squad.

Bills Sign Tate: The Bills have filled their open roster spot by signing wide receiver/return specialist Brandon Tate. He spent the last five seasons in Cincinnati before being released during the final cuts. The eight year veteran has averaged 24.6 yards per kick return and 9.2 yards per punt return in his career with three touchdowns. He will likely battle Walter Powell for the main backup spot as a returner behind Reggie Bush. The Bills also added another player to the practice squad inking CB Marcus Roberson. The team now has three open spots on the scout team. Front Office Page.

Regular Season Mode: The Bills are back on the practice field today after getting three days off for the holiday weekend. They have begun preparations in earnest for the season opener on Sunday against the Ravens. Rex Ryan addressed the media before practice and showed a video of his son making a nice play in grabbing a high snap and getting the hold down for a Clemson FG. On the injury front, Aaron Williams is out of concussion protocol and is practicing fully along with Seantrel Henderson, Mike Gillislee, Marquise Goodwin, Nickell Robey-Coleman, and Cordy Glenn. Henderson practicing his a huge step but Ryan was uncertain if he will be active on Sunday. One player who will be active and helping at least on special teams is recently signed LB Lerentee McCray. Kevin Seymour and Colt Anderson are sidelined. Anderson hurt his foot in the preseason finale on Thursday night and Seymour remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. Jonathan Williams and Ryan Groy are limited. LeSean McCoy was excused from practice for personal reasons. Injury Page.

Monday September 5, 2016

Vitale Gone; Practice Squad Additions: The Bills have added CB Doran Grant, WR Matt Hazel, G Gabe Ikard and LB Max Valles to the team’s practice squad. Ikard was on the team last season for a while and Valles was with the team all summer. The team also released Danny Vitale who they signed yesterday. That means they have an open spot on their 53 man roster. Grant was a fourth round draft pick of the Steelers in 2015. Hazel was a sixth round draft pick of the Dolphins in 2014. Practice Squad.
