Bills Shutout Patriots In New England

Sunday October 2, 2016

Gameday Grades: The defense pulled off the first shutout by an opponent in Foxboro since 1993 and the first win ever at Gillette Stadium. The offense won a game when Tyrod Taylor threw more than 30 passes. Special teams were fantastic with great coverage skills and three field goals. Our grades are pretty good today. Gameday Grades.

Bills Blitz: The Bills defense swarmed rookie third string quarterback Jacoby Brissett all day long as they handed the Patriots their first ever shutout at Gillette Stadium 16-0. The victory was the second straight for Buffalo and pulled them to within a game of first place and in sole possession of 2nd place in the AFC East. Tyrod Taylor hit LeSean McCoy for a 7 yard touchdown on the opening series and Dan Carpenter added three field goals as the Bills controlled the game from the start. Bills Blitz.

White Banged Up: Corey White was hurt in the fourth quarter while trying to recover a muffed punt. He did not return as it took several minutes before he could walk off the field very unsteadily. He went straight to the locker room and was put in concussion protocol. Jordan Mills was shaken up but just missed one play. Injury Page.

Inactives: The Bills have a few players that are inactive because of injury. Sammy Watkins isn't one of them since he was placed on injured reserve on Friday. Patrick Lewis, Cyrus Kouandjio, and Greg Salas lead the inactive list as they were ruled out on Friday with their injuries. Cardale Jones is inactive as the third quarterback and because he's battling a right shoulder injury he's had since the preseason. That leaves just three healthy scratches as Gabe Ikard, Reggie Bush, and Justin Hunter will also sit. Hunter was claimed off of waivers too late in the week to be ready to play. Bush is a bit of a surprise since he could have helped out in the slot. He is almost certainly going to be cut to make room for the returning suspended players. Colt Anderson is healthy for the first time this year and will make his Bills debut.

2nd Surgery For Watkins? Adam Schefter is reporting that Sammy Watkins is headed to North Carolina to meet with foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson. He will be determining if a second surgery is needed. If he does need a 2nd procedure on his Jones fracture his season will be officially over and coming back for the stretch run will not be possible. Schefter reports that they believe a 2nd surgery is needed. Meanwhile, it is still unknown who will play QB for the Patriots. Adam Schefter is also reporting that Jimmy Garoppolo will be inactive and Jacoby Brissett will start at quarterback and be backed up by WR Julian Edelman.

Gameday Weather: It will be cool and damp for today's game outside of Boston. A high temperature of 63° is expected with a shower or two possible during the game. Winds will be out of the Northwest gusting up to 9mph.

Looks Like It's Garoppolo: WEEI's Kirk Minihane is reporting that Jimmy Garoppolo will be the starting quarterback for the Patriots tomorrow against the Bills. Garoppolo was fantastic in the first game and a half of the season before injuring the AC join in his throwing shoulder forcing him to miss the last game and a half. He practiced on a limited basis all week along with the third string quarterback Jacoby Brissett who injured the thumb in his throwing hand in last week's victory over Houston.

Watkins To IR: The Bills have made the decision to shutdown Sammy Watkins and has placed him on the reserve/injured list. He is not automatically out for the season. He can be the player they end up designating to return and he could come back in eight weeks. Teams no longer have to make that designation when they place the player on IR. The team filled his roster spot by claiming Justin Hunter off of waivers. He played for Tennessee and Miami since entering the league in 2013. He has appeared in 36 career games with 68 receptions for 1,116 yards and 8 TDs. Depth Chart.

Watkins Out: Sammy Watkins was not on the field during today's practice and has been ruled out of Sunday's game. Rex Ryan said his foot is becoming a major concern and there is no timetable for his return. Ian Rapoport says that the foot is still structurally sound it is just a matter of being able to play through the pain and rest should help. More bad news at the receiver position as Greg Salas has been ruled out as well. Leaving the Bills with just Marquise Goodwin, Robert Woods, Walter Powell, and Brandon Tate has healthy wideouts. There is a chance they could make a roster move and add Dez Lewis from the practice squad. Cyrus Kouandjio, and Patrick Lewis have also been ruled out. Cordy Glenn, Jonathan Meeks, Colt Anderson, Aaron Williams, and Ronald Darby all practiced today increasing the likelihood they will play on Sunday. Injury Page.

Game Preview: The Bills look to keep up the momentum of last week's win with a big matchup against the Patriots. It will be interesting to see who plays quarterback for New England with Jacoby Brissett and Jimmy Garoppolo coming off injuries. The one person we are sure not to see is Tom Brady who serves the last game of his suspension. Complete Preview.

Watkins Sits Again: Sammy Watkins sat out practice again today adding to the concern that he will sit out a second straight game this week. He is not expected to practice tomorrow but they are hopeful he will fly with the team to New England. Greg Salas, Cyrus Kouandjio, Jonathan Meeks, and Patrick Lewis sat out practice. Cordy Glenn and Ronald Darby were out there for a second straight day while Charles Clay returned to practice. Injury Page.

Wednesday September 28, 2016

Three Don't Practice: Cordy Glenn returned to practice today on a limited basis which is a good sign for him according to Rex Ryan. Charles Clay, Cyrus Kouandjio, and Sammy Watkins did not practice. Glenn's possible return comes at a perfect time with Kouandjio's injury. Aaron Williams, Kyle Williams, Grag Salas and Marquise Goodwin are also limited today. Ryan pranked Julian Edelman jumping on his conference call with the Western New York media and asked him if he was playing quarterback this week. Edelman didn't recognize the voice. Injury Page.

Bills Sign OL: The Bills have filled the open roster spot vacated by the release of Jordan Gay. They have signed OT Michael Ola. They may need an extra tackle since Cyrus Kouandjio rolled his ankle late in the win over the Cardinals and Cordy Glenn has been sidelined since re-injuring his ankle in the opener. Seantrel Henderson is back from his suspension on Monday. Ola has 19 career starts in 23 games played. He played for Aaron Kromer in Chicago. Depth Chart.

Tuesday September 27, 2016

Gay Released: The Bills have opened up a roster spot by once again releasing their kickoff specialist Jordan Gay. They also released LB Carlos Field and S Damian Parms from the practice squad while adding WR Ed Eagan and C Terran Vaughn to that unit. Eagan spent time with the Cowboys and the Browns. Vaughn spent time with the Raiders. Both players were undrafted free agents in this year's draft. Front Office Page.

Whaley On WGR: Doug Whaley joined Howard Simon and Jeremy White on WGR this morning. Among the highlights Whaley said getting the first win under their belt felt good since it's been a long time coming. He saw a good flow and rythym with Anthony Lynn running the offense and they took it to the defense which was encouraging. They need to exploit the running ability of Tyrod Taylor but they need to continue to pound into him that he has to run smart. His passing skills still need to improve his comfortablitiy in the pocket. He needs to learn to slide around it a bit more. He can throw over the middle even with his size he needs to just find the passing lanes but moving around. On Sammy Watkins, Whaley said they are leaning on the medical staff. They know Sammy wants to play and if there is no further damage to the foot that can come by playing they will let him play. The medical staff seems to feel that is the case. There have been no setbacks on the progression of the ankle injury to Cordy Glenn so they will see how it goes this week. They are cautiously optimistic he will get on the field in practice this week. Whaley praised the way Cyrus Kouandjio is playing even after getting his ankle rolled late in the win over Arizona. The GM says Shaq Lawson is on schedule to begin practicing when he's allowed to after week 6. He assumes Marcell Dareus will be rotated in the first game or two he is back to ease him into football shape. Injury Page.

Monday September 26, 2016

Ryan Presser: Rex Ryan had his normal Monday press conference and was in a good mood as you can imagine. He started out mimicking Bill Belichik and said he has an idea who will play QB for the Patriots but he assumes they will keep them guessing right up until kickoff. The coach said defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman will call plays again this week after he was successful last week. He praised the play of Lezer Douzable and Kyle Williams. He said it hurt to only see Williams play six games last year.
