Bills Pull One Out Late 24-21

AP Photo - Lee Evans Total Team Effort: The Bills finally put it all together and were able to pull out a win on the road. The defense struggled early but the offense had them in the game. When the offense bogged down and gave up seven points themselves, the defense rose to the occassion and made big stops. It is all reflecting in our position by position analyst of the win. Gameday Grades.

Bills Win Thriller 24-21: In his first opportunity for a game winning scoring drive, J.P. Losman did not disappoint. He hit Peerless Price in the back of the end zone for a 15 yard scoring strike with :09 remaining to give the Bills the 24-21 win in Houston. The Bills opened up the offense as Losman threw a pair of 83 yard scoring strikes to Lee Evans in the first quarter as he broke a club record with 265 receiving yards on 11 catches. Losman had a career high 340 yards passing but did throw an interception that was returned for a touchdown by Dunta Robinson giving the Texans the lead in the third quarter. David Carr had a huge day for the Texans completing an NFL record tying 22 passes in a row at one point. The Texans running game ran up 188 yards in their running back by committee approach including two touchdown runs in the first half. Game Review.

Injury Update: The win was sweeter since the Bills had no apparent new injuries in the victory. As we reported earlier, all three players on the injury report for the Bills were inactive. Injury Page.

Youboty, Bowen Active: Injured players Willis McGahee and Josh Reed are obviously inactive as they were ruled out of this game on Wednesday. Placing Chris Villarrial and Ryan Neufeld on injured reserve opens up two spots to be filled on the active list. Matt Bowen and Ashton Youboty are both active for the first time this year. Keith Ellison is the only other injured inactive player as he is out with a knee injury. The healthy inactive are: Tutan Reyes, Jason Jefferson, and Eric Powell. Brad Cieslak is active as the third tight end after being signed off the practice squad on Thursday. The Bills only needed six inactives because they have an open roster spot.

Roof To Be Open: The retractable roof at Reliant Stadium will be open today as the weather is expected to be beautiful. The gametime temperature is expected to be in the mid 60s under Sunny skies with no chance of rain. Winds will be light out of the North Northeast at 10mph.

Ellison Likely Out: Keith Ellison was held out of practice once again yesterday with his knee injury making it very unlikely he will be available for tomorrow's game against Houston. If he is inactive that may allow the Bills to activate Matt Bowen or Ashton Youboty for the first time this season. Injury Report.

Friday November 17, 2006

Cieslak Activated: As expected the Bills have added Brad Cieslak to the 53 man roster. He replaces Ryan Neufeld who was placed on injured reserve yesterday. The Bills still have one open spot on the roster. Cieslak has spent the whole season on the practice squad. He was also on the eight man unit last year until replacing Neufeld for the final two games when Neufeld suffered a knee injury.

Carr Upgraded: The Texans have upgraded QB David Carr to probable as he practiced yesterday. He should start against the Bills on Sunday. That was the only change to the report for Houston. Injury Report.

Reed, Thomas Hall Semi-Finalists: The list of 25 semi finalist candidates for the Hall of Fame were announced and two former Bills are on it. It is no surprise that Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed are on the list. The list will be cutdown to 15 finalists plus two senior committee candidates in mid-January with the Class of 2007 being announced Super Bowl weekend. Thomas was a finalist last year and appears to have a good shot at being part of that class. Wide Receivers traditionally have to wait a bit longer making Reed more of a longshot at this time.

Thursday November 16, 2006

Villarrial, Neufeld On IR: The Bills placed two of the four players listed as out this week on injured reserve. Ryan Neufeld and Chris Villarrial are now on the list and their seasons are over. Neufeld is suffering from plantar Fasciitis which is an injury to the foot and Villarrial has a tendon injury to his right ankle that will likely require surgery. No word yet on who will be activated for the Bills to fill the open roster spots but it appears obvious that practice squad TE Brad Cieslak will be activated. Injury Report.

Losman More Mobile? In his Wednesday press conference Dick Jauron indicated the Bills may be willing to move J.P. Losman out of the pocket a bit more. It would probably help him as he is good throwing on the rund and should help with the pass protection problems. Jauron said Losman has the green light to run when things break down but don't want that to be his first option. He also said he expects Losman to take advantage of his mobility more as time goes on.

Roster Move Possible: With the injury to Ryan Neufeld the Bills are down to just two healthy tight ends making a roster move a possibility. Dick Jauron said they can go with just but will wait unti the end of the week to make a decision. The most likely move would be to activate Brad Cieslak off of the practice squad. They can make room for him by placing Chris Villarrial on injured reserve if he elects to have surgery on his ankle tendon injury.

Ellison Injury Happened Sunday: The one surprise on the injury report was to Keith Ellison. He injured his knee during the loss to the Colts but did finish the game. They were surprised how it got progressively worse since the game on Sunday. He is day to day at this point. Injury Report.

Wednesday November 15, 2006

Villarrial Likely Out For Year: Dick Jauron said today that it is likely that Chris Villarrial is out for the year with the ankle injury suffered against the Colts. Jauron said it is a good chance his season is over with a tendon injury that is very painful because it moves across the ankle. Surgery is being considered as an option. Duke Preston will start in Villarrial's place. Injury Report.

Four Players Out: The Bills have ruled Josh Reed, Chris Villarrial, Ryan Neufeld and Willis McGahee as out for Sunday's game against the Texans. McGahee is much improved but not ready to return with three broken ribs. Reed remains out with his kidney injury and Villarrial and Neufeld are out after getting injured against the Colts. Keith Ellison is the only surprise on the report, he's questionable with a knee injury. Injury Report.

Let Losman Loose: All fans have weighed in on the J.P. Losman controversy in recent weeks. Tony Bogyo takes his stab at it this week in his column. Is Losman the guy? Is the offensive line the problem? Bogyo feels it's time to find out by letting Losman loose and give him a chance to prove himself. Complete Story.

Sunday's Game Winnable: The Bills head to Houston this week to take on a Texans team with the same record they have. It is a winnable game but the Bills must get past the tough loss in Indianapolis that seemed to hit them hard. It will also be a time for Eric Moulds to catch up with his former teammates. Do you think the Bills will win on Sunday? Take our poll on our homepage. Game Preview.

Charge Expected To Be Dropped: The harassment charge against Donte Whitner is expected to be dropped today. The prosecutor is recommending the dismissal to the judge after receiving a letter from Whitner's girlfriend requesting it. In the letter she said she did not requre medical attention after police were called ot their home on November 5th. The charge is a violation called simple harassment, it is not a misdemeanor.

Monday November 13, 2006

Neufeld Has Plantar Fasciitis Injury: The Bills updated the injury to Ryan Neufeld after the game. It is a Plantar Fasciitis injury. That is an inflammation of the band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the base of the toes. He was carted off the field in the fourth quarter and taken to the locker room and did not return. Injury Report.

Offense Needs To Punch It In: J.P. Losman called the loss tougher since they were in it all the way. The protection issues are missed assignments, they aren't getting overmanned physically. They need to get that cleaned up. He said he still has faith in his line and they just have to do it. The offense needs to find a way to get the ball into the end zone especially when they get the ball down close like they did on the long kickoff return. They will go back to the drawing board to see how to get those things done. The offense needs to execute whatever is called by the coaches. They need to expect to score but until they do it they won't have confidence to get it done but they definitely need to pick it up in the red zone. Losman is sure the defense and special teams are very frustrated by the lack of scoring. Those units did everything possible to make the offense successful and it starts with him. He doesn't have the answers but he knows it takes time. He thinks they are capable of doing great things but there are glaring things on offense that they need to pick it up.

Painful Loss: Dick Jauron said it was a painful loss to be that close and not take it in the end. The guys played hard but did enough things to hurt themselves. Winning the turnover battle gave them a chance. They played close to the kind of game they needed to but not up to where they needed to be. It was just very disappointing. The gameplan was to keep the ball away from the Colts. A big problem once again was protecting the passer. He said Rian Lindell was crushed by his missed field goal and when he does miss it you are surprised since he's been automatic all year. The coach said the players were down after the loss.
