NEWS ARCHIVES - OCT 22ND - OCT 29TH, 2007 PREVIOUS WEEK

Losman Leads Bills To Second Straight Win

AP Photo - J.P. Losman QB Decision Wednesday: Dick Jauron addressed the media on Monday and said he will wait to Wednesday to see who will start at quarterback against Cincinnati. He would not elaborate but wants to see how Trent Edwards recovers from the sprained wrist he suffered on a third quarter sack against the Jets. He did say he knows who will start if both QBs are healthy but wouldn't share his thoughts with the media.

Defense Shines Again: Got to hand it to Perry Fewell, he has his young, no name defense playing really well now that some of the injured players are back. They held the Jets to only 254 yards offensively as the unit just gets better and better. Of course their effort are reflected very favorably on our position by position analysis. Gameday Grades.

Bills Beat Jets 13-3: Is the QB controversy back? J.P. Losman came off the bench for an injured Trent Edwards and led the Bills to 10 fourth quarter points in a 13-3 win over the Jets at the Meadowlands. It was the Bills second straight win. The big play was an 85 yard touchdown pass to Lee Evans. On that play he went up for it and brought it down with two defenders on him. Game Review.

X-Rays Negative On Wrist: The only injury of note in the win was to Trent Edwards. X-rays on his injured right wrist were negative. The Bills may update his situation later today but it is probably not going to be known if he will play against Cincinnati until later in the week. There was some good news as Chris Kelsay was able to play and made it through the game fine. Marshawn Lynch missed some time in the game with a hip injury getting Dwayne Wright more playing time. Injury Page.

Sunday October 28, 2007

Nice Fall Day In NJ: It will be sunny and seasonable at the Meadowlands today. The gametime temperature will be in the upper 50's to low 60's. It will be a windy day with winds out of the northwest at around 18mph.

Lynch Honored: Marshawn Lynch received his first rookie award this week for his performance against Baltimore last Sunday. He was named the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week by voters on NFL.com and sprint wireless. He ran for 84 yards on 27 carries and a touchdown in the win over the Ravens.

Kelsay Game Time Decision: Chris Kelsay did not practice again today and will be a game time decision. He's listed as questionable for the game Sunday. The Bills just don't seem to be getting healthier. Just when you think there is a light at the end of the tunnel, several players return seems to be delayed. Ryan Denney, Leon Joe, and Ashton Youboty are all out for the game after they all seemed to be getting closer to returning. Jim Leonhard is doubtful as he seemed to backtrack a bit today. Injury Page.

Leonhard Returns To Practice: Jim Leonhard and Leon Joe did work out on a limited basis yesterday in practice. It is possible Leonhard may dress on Sunday but not start. The other walking wounded including Chris Kelsay remain sidelined. The Bills hope Kelsay can work today but they don't appear too optimistic. Injury Page.

Vilma Out: The Jets got some bad news as they get ready to face the Bills on Sunday. They will be without Jonathan Vilma not only this week but for the rest of the year. Complete Preview.

Wednesday October 24, 2007

Losman To Act Like A Captain: J.P. Losman addressed the media after practice today to talk about being officially named the backup quarterback for the team. He called it a disappointment as a competitor and all he will do is support the move, the quarterback, and the teammates as the captain he is. He is going to stay positive in his new role. It will be a challenge to prepare as a starter even though he isn't one but he's doing ok with it at this time. When asked if he got a raw deal, he chose his words carefully and called it a tough situation and will let the situation sink in before he analyzes it, he will just ride it out. He expects to be ready to play if he needs to get in there.

Five Held Out Of Practice: The Bills had several players that did not practice today because of injuries. Not on the field were Chris Kelsay, Leon Joe, Ryan Denney, Jim Leonhard, and Josh Stamer. Dick Jauron said it doesn't look like Kelsay will practice until Friday at the earliest making it unlikely he will play this week with his ankle sprain. On the positive front, Sam Aiken practiced fully after missing last week's game with a hamstring strain. Ryan Neufeld and Ashton Youboty both practice on a limited basis. Neufeld has a quad injury that wasn't reported earlier, Youboty is still battling his ankle injury. Injury Page.

Edwards Is The Starter, Not Just This Week: Dick Jauron called this week a tough game since both team's have their backs against the wall and have had some tough losses. He said they will have to play their best game to win it. He confirmed that Trent Edwards is the starter, not just for this week. He will be treated like any other starter and it is his job until someone takes it from him. Jauron said he likes both of his young guys. He feels Edwards has gotten better every week although he acknowledged they haven't scored too many points behind either guy. He also said it isn't fair to J.P. Losman but life isn't fair. He feels J.P. is ready to play if needed and did a nice job on gameday last week. It was hard for him to tell Losman he has lost his starting job. He feels he has the ability to be a good QB in the league and he works hard.

Jets Stick With Pennington: The Jets have decided to stick with Chad Pennington at quarterback. There has been talk of them switching to former 2nd round draft pick Kellen Clemens. Coach Eric Mangini said he liked his decision making process during last week's loss to the Bengals when looking at film. He also feels comfortable with this decision. Many Jet fans have been clamoring to see the young player.

Jets Could Be Dangerous: The Bills seem to be on the way up while the Jets are wallowing in a really bad year, worse then the Bills. That doesn't mean a Bills victory however, as the Jets should be desperate as they are on notice that no job is safe, that will make them dangerous on Sunday. Complete Preview.

Bills Add Two: The Bills added two players to the practice squad today to fill the open spots. WR Felton Huggins and LB Blake Costanzo are the newest players on the taxi squad. Huggins was with the team this summer before being released in late August. Costanzo was with the Jets this summer and was originally an undrafted free agent signee by the Jets in 2006. He received All-Europa honors this year playing for the Rhein Fire.

Owners Meeting Goes Well Bills Owner Ralph Wilson feels the owners meeting went well and that the Bills playing games in Toronto is a real possiblity. In a statement Wilson said that the discussions were constructive and encouraging. He expects the matter to be finalized. The owners will vote on the plan most likely at their next meeting within two months. The Bills are looking to play a regular season game in Toronto starting next year and going through the end of the lease in 2012 and a preseason game there in 2008, 2010, and 2012.

Edwards Move Appears Final: Although Dick Jauron didn't say it exactly, it appears Trent Edwards is now the starting quarterback and it is not a week to week thing. He released a statement through the team's website saying, "We are naming Trent Edwards as our starting quarterback, I have spoken with both Trent and J.P. Losman and want to get the word out to our fans." He said he will address the issue further in his usual Wednesday media day press conference.

Edwards Again: The team's official website reports that the coach has decided to stick with Trent Edwards this week against the Jets. No word yet on if this is a permanent move or if the decision remains on a week to week basis. The offensive coaches were very impressed with how Edwards ran the no huddle offense against the Ravens. They were also happy with how his cadence kept the aggressive defense off balance and forcing them to jump offsides on several plays.

League Owners Talking About Toronto: The owners meeting is taking place in Philadelphia today and tomorrow. Not much is expected out of it except that the owners will talk about the Bills plan to play in Toronto. WGR is reporting that the team is only looking to play one regular season game over the next four or five years in Toronto. Ralph Wilson is not adverse to playing a preseason game there as well to save the season ticket holders some money. Erie County has approved the plan as has the state.

Players Off: The players were given an extra day off yesterday to celebrate the win. It is the first time this year that Dick Jauron has given the players an extra day off. There are two big QB issues for next week's game against the Jets. We should know later today or tomorrow on who will QB for the Bills. Eric Mangini has also yet to decide if he will bench Chad Pennington for Kellen Clemens.

Monday October 22, 2007

Monday Injury Report: Dick Jauron updated the media on the Bills injuries from the win over the Ravens. The injury to Chris Kelsay is to his ankle, he'll be re-evaluated today. Leon Joe has a bone bruise. Those are the most serious injuries and neither appears to be too bad but there is a chance the Bills will be without them this weekend in the Meadowlands. Kiwaukee Thomas suffered from cramps and is ok. Josh Stamer played through a calf strain. Injury Page.

QB Decision Wednesday: Dick Jauron isn't ready to annoint Trent Edwards as his starting QB for next week's game against the Jets. He said he will evaluate everything and let the players know before practice on Wednesday. It will be hard to hide behind the knee injury of J.P. Losman in this controversy for one more week. Edwards numbers were pedestrian in the win but he does have two wins under his belt.
