Bills Lose Preseason Opener
No Big Injuries In Loss: The most important thing in a preseason game happened for the Bills last night. It appears they came away without any new serious injuries. The one injury to note was the late scratch of Terrence McGee. He made the trip to Washington but watched the game in street clothes with an apparent ankle injury. Injury Page.
Players Who Helped Themselves: Many players helped themselves in last night's loss to the Redskins. J.P. Losman played very well completing 7 of his 9 passes for 73 yards and hitting James Hardy on a nice fade pattern for the Bills only touchdown. Roscoe Parrish was active when he played as well. He caught a 30 yard pass from Losman. Ashton Youboty had a fine game as he was good in coverage playing with the first and second teamers. He had a big interception and made a heads up lateral on the play as well. Leodis McKelvin made his mark on the game with three returns for a total of 105 yards. He did make the wrong move on Ladell Betts 12 yard touchdown reception. Who do you think helped themselves the most? Take our poll on our homepage and let us know what you think!
Players Who Hurt Themselves: Derek Schouman got the start at tight end but didn't catch a pass, he also dropped one. Robert Royal didn't catch one either. Trent Edwards struggled in his limited action completing only one pass. Lee Evans didn't catch a pass but he barely played. Dwayne Wright had a costly fumble that resulted in the only points of the 2nd half by either team.

Bills Lose 17-14. The Bills dropped their preseason opener to the Redskins 17-14 tonight. The game got off to a good start as John DiGiorgio forced a fumble of the opening kickoff that was recovered by Rian Lindell. It led to a field goal as Trent Edwards hit Roscoe Parrish to convert a third down but the Bills couldn't punch it in. The first team defense stopped the Redskins on the opening series but the Redskins would score touchdowns on their next two possessions. J.P. Losman performed well as he led the Bills back from a 14-3 deficit to tie the game before halftime. The highlight was a 16 yard touchdown pass to James Hardy. The score was setup by an Ashton Youboty interception. Terrence McGee was a surprise scratch from the game. Leodis McKelvin had a solid game with a 45 yard punt return and 60 yards on two kickoff returns.
Hardy Expected To Start: James Hardy has recovered enough from his hamstring injury that he's not only expected to play tonight, he's expected to start. Josh Reed remains sidelined with a back injury which gives Hardy a chance at more reps. The Bills other top rookie, Leodis McKelvin is expected to see extensive time returning punts and kicks. Roscoe Parrish should get the first crack at punt returns and Terrence McGee is expected to return at least one kickoff before giving way to the 1st round pick. With Copeland Bryan sidelined, Spencer Johnson is expected to get extra reps tonight at defensive end as well as his expected defensive tackle reps.
Bills Ready To Hit Field: The Bills are ready to hit other people for the first time since December. The team is in the nation's capital to take on the Redskins tonight at 7. For those of you that have the NFL Network it is broadcasting the game live in HD for those that have it. We will have a complete recap including who helped themselves and who hurt themselves early tomorrow morning.

Edwards To Get Reps: Trent Edwards said he expects to get 10-20 reps tomorrow night against the Redskins. The starting offense and defense are expected to get that many reps. The team shortened practice a bit yesterday as they prepare for the first preseason game. The team has a closed practice this morning before flying to Washington. On the positive side, James Hardy will play.
Whitner, Reed, Crowell Out: Four players will not make the trip to Washington when the team faces the Redskins tomorrow night. Angelo Crowell, Donte Whitner, Josh Reed, and Copeland Bryan will not play. Crowell's troublesome knee swelled up and he missed Thursday's practice. Whitner and Reed remain out with what appears to be minor injuries. Bryan is battling a hamstring injury which will give newly signed Derrick Jones a chance to play. Injury Page.

Bills Add DE: The Bills have signed DE Derrick Jones today. To make room they placed Alvin Bowen on the waived-injured list. If he goes unclaimed they will be able to place him on their injured reserve list later today. Jones played with the Falcons as a rookie last year and appeared in one game. He was originally signed by the Steelers as an undrafted free agent. He played his college ball at Grand Valley State. Front Office Page.
Favre To Jets: The competition in the AFC East just got tougher. The Jets have sent a conditional 4th round draft to the Packers for Brett Favre. The disgruntled former Green Bay QB will be fired up to show the Packers they made a mistake and this could be bad news for the Bills. What do you think? Take our poll on our homepage and let us know.

Whitner, Reed To Miss Game: Josh Reed, and Donte Whitner did not practice once again today and they will very likely miss the preseason opener against Washington on Saturday night. James Hardy returned to practice on Wednesday but it has yet to be determined if he'll play on Saturday. There were new players sidelined for today's practice. Scott Mayle was held out with a hamstring injury that doesn't appear too serious. Matt Baker was held out with a groin injury. Injury Page.
Rainy Night Practice: The team dodged rain drops during last night's practice that caused a 15 minute delay at the start of practice and a delay in the middle of practice. The players benefited from practicing with a wet, heavy football but Dick Jauron did not want to risk injury so they were cautious. Trent Edwards threw the ball well with the weather. Reggie Corner continued his fine camp as he had first team reps at nickel and had his camp leading third interception.
Players Still Out: Copeland Bryan, Josh Reed, and Donte Whitner remain sidelined. Reed will have his back re-examined today by team doctors. Whitner's ankle is feeling better and they are being cautious with him. Will James and James Hardy were going to try and return last night but were limited to individual drills because of the weather. Injury Page.

Losman, Crowell Return: J.P. Losman and Angelo Crowell returned to practice yesterday. Losman has been battling a sore thumb and Crowell returned after missing a week with a recurring knee problem. Bowen To Have Surgery: Dick Jauron said today that Alvin Bowen will have surgery next week to repair a torn ligament in his knee. He will miss most if not the whole season. The team has yet to decide if they will put him on IR.
Reed, Whitner Hurt: Donte Whitner is undergoing an MRI after suffering an ankle injury. He likely hurt it during Saturday's practice and it hasn't responded to rest over the weekend. The team is being extra cautious with Whitner and they don't think it's serious but want to have tests to determine the course of treatment. Josh Reed aggravated his lower back today and they are being careful with it since he had offseason back surgery. Injury Page.
Spragan Happy: LB Donnie Spragan addressed the media before hitting the practice field today. He is already putting in a lot of time as he tries to learn the defense. He's happy and excited to be a Bill and is looking forward to playing football. He was confident he would get the opportunity to play somewhere. He has a lot to get used to and he thinks he can help the team. He has been around the league long enough to be somewhat familiar with how the Bills do things defensively.
Bills Add WR: The Bills filled their last open roster spot today by signing rookie free agent WR C.J. Hawthorne. He takes Jason Peter's roster spot who has been placed on the reserve did not report list. He only played the position his final year in Hawaii, before that he was a cornerback. In 13 games he had 61 receptions for 859 yards and six touchdowns. Depth Chart.
Players Return To Work: The team gets back to the practice field today after having the day off yesterday. There is a 45 minute closed walk-thru this morning and then a full open practice this afternoon. The players hope to be rested and the team hopes to get some of the players back that have been hampered by bumps and bruises including J.P. Losman, Angelo Crowell, and James Hardy.
