NEWS ARCHIVES - OCT 20TH - OCT 26TH, 2008 PREVIOUS WEEK

Bills Collapse In First Division Matchup

Jauron Doesn't Comment On Contract: Dick Jauron did not comment on the reports that the has reached an agreement on a contract negotiation. In the post game press conference he said he doesn't talk about those things. Don't expect an official announcement from the Bills either as they don't comment on contracts of non-players.

Offense Collapses In Loss: It wasn't pretty especially when you think that the Bills had a nine point lead in the third quarter. The defense immediately struggled stopping Miami and got no help from an offense that was suddenly in a charitable mood in the fourth quarter. This week's grades won't be pretty. Gameday Grades.

Bills Lose 25-16: The Bills turned the ball over three times and gave up a safety all in the fourth quarter as Miami pulled away with a 25-16 come from behind win over the Bills. Marshawn Lynch had an eight yard touchdown run to give the Bills a 16-7 lead early in the third quarter but Miami took over from there re-gaining the lead at 17-16 before the Bills turnover fest began. Trent Edwards threw for 227 yards but threw an interception lost a fumble and fumbled the ball another time that resulted in a safety. Game Review.

Reed Hurt: Josh Reed left early in the third quarter with a strained achilles tendon and did not return. He may have hurt it late in the first half and came out in the third quarter but couldn't compete. Marshawn Lynch left the game after the first play with a knee injury that wasn't serious. Marcus Stroud had his ankle banged up and had it re-taped. Both players returned. Terrence McGee returned to the lineup and came through the game fine health wise but struggled in coverage. Melvin Fowler was active and played late in the fourth quarter when Duke Preston was moved to guard. Jason Whittle left the game no word on what his injury is. Injury Page.

Jauron Gets Extension: NFL Network reports today that Dick Jauron has agreed to a three year contract extension with the team. He was in the final year of his deal and reports have stated for about a month that a new deal was being worked out. He becomes the first Bills coach since Marv Levy to get a second contract with the team.

McGee Active: Terrence McGee and Melvin Fowler are active for today's game. McGee will likely resume his role in the starting lineup but Fowler will likely be used only as a backup since Duke Preston took all the first team snaps this week. The only gametime decision that is inactive is Ashton Youboty. A surprise inactive is WR Justin Jenkins leaving the Bills with just four active wideouts and leaving a hole on special teams. Reggie Corner will likely replace Jenkins in the gunner role. Jenkins was scratched to make room for Derek Fine who will make his NFL debut today as he is active for the first time as he is finally healthy after having thumb surgery. As was known on Friday Aaron Schobel and Brad Butler are inactive as well. The other inactives are draft picks Steve Johnson, Xavier Omon, and Demetrius Bell.

Showers Possible: It looks like sunny South Florida won't be that sunny or overly hot for today's game. There is a 60% chance of thunder showers throughout the game. The temperature at kickoff is expected to be around 80°. The chance or rain and the temperature should decrease slightly as the day wears on. Winds will be light at around 8mph out of the North.

Saturday October 25, 2008

Ferguson May Play: The Bills thought they would get a break but may not. Run stuffing DT Jason Ferguson has an oblique injury for the Dolphins and did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday. He did practice fully on Friday and is listed as questionable. He will likely play if he feels ok today and Sunday morning. Injury Page.

Edwards Honored: Trent Edwards was voted the Fed Ex NFL Air Player of the Week. He beat out Tampa's Jeff Garcia and Houston's Matt Schaub. Edwards broke a club record for best completion percentage in a single game.

Friday October 24, 2008

Schobel, Butler Out: Aaron Schobel and Brad Butler have been ruled out of Sunday's game after both missed practice again on Friday. Terrence McGee is listed as questionable as he practiced all week on a limited basis. He will be a gametime decision along with Ashton Youboty and Melvin Fowler. Youboty is unlikely to play, Fowler practiced on a limited basis all week and will test his injured elbow in pregame warmups. Even if Fowler could go it's likely that Duke Preston will start in his place. The Bills want to make sure Schobel gets healthy before putting him back on the field. Ryan Denney will start for him for the second straight week. Jason Whittle will start for Butler. Injury Page.

Thursday October 23, 2008

Schobel, Butler, Youboty Out: Ashton Youboty, Brad Butler and Aaron Schobel remained sidelined during today's practice session. Dick Jauron won't rule any of three out yet but he doesn't know if any of the three will be able to practice on Friday. It seems unlikely that any of the three will play. On the positive front Terrence McGee practiced for a second day and took more first team reps although he was officially still limited. Melvin Fowler practiced on a limited basis but not with the first team. For the Dolphins, CB Michael Lehan suffered a hamstring injury in practice today, his status for the game is unknown. Injury Page.

Ellison Gets Radio: John DiGiorgio was the backup player on defense that had the radio helmet. Now that he's out of the season those duties go to Keith Ellison. He now will have two helmets, the regular one he'll wear when he plays outside next to Paul Posluszny and the radio helmet if Poz is out. He is also expected to move into the backup spot at middle lineback if Poz was to leave the game. Depth Chart.

Wednesday October 22, 2008

Schobel Likely Out: Aaron Schobel remains in a walking boot and out of practice. Dick Jauron said he likely won't practice tomorrow as well and he's not optimistic about his availability on Sunday. Brad Butler and Ashton Youboty remain sidelined but Terrence McGee and Melvin Fowler returned on a limited basis. Injury Page.

Whitner Remains Free: Donte Whitner continued to take the majority of his practic reps at free safety and some at nickel in practice today. Dick Jauron would not say this is a permanent move but it is more based on who they are playing and how they want to lineup but it appears it may be a more permanent move. If that's the case then Ko Simpson may be the odd man out with Bryan Scott seeing more time at strong safety Depth Chart.

Smith Added To Practice Squad: With the promotion of Marcus Buggs to the active roster the Bills filled the spot on the practice squad by signing DE Marcus Smith. He was on the Cowboys practice squad last year. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona.

McCargo On IR: As expected the Bills placed John DiGiorgio on injured reserve today and have activated Marcus Buggs from the practice squad. Buggs was an undrafted free agent that spent the summer with the Bills. He plays more of an outside linebacker so it is unknown who will backup Paul Pozluszny in the middle. DiGiorgio is the third linebacker to go on IR this year for the Bills. It is a big blow to the special teams and Buggs is expected to help out in that aspect of the game. Front Office Page.

Division Stretch Starts: The Bills are starting what perhaps is the most important stretch of their schedule with three straight division games, two of them on the road. It starts this week in sunny and hot South Florida as they go and play the fiesty and much improved Dolphins. A win in Miami would be a good start to this very important stretch. Game Preview.

Bills Charged Up: It was an interesting weekend of technical difficulties that kept fans from watching the beginning of game 6 of the ALCS and a good portion of the Bills game. Despite the power problems at the Ralph the Bills were able to keep the fans very excited about this team with a big win. Tony Bogyo breaks downt he bizarre weekend with his latest article. Complete Story.

Tuesday October 21, 2008

DiGiorgio's Season Over: The worst fears were realized as John DiGiorgio's season is over. His agent told AP tonight that DiGiorgio will have season ending surgery next week. The team reportedly told the agent that DiGiorgio will be placed on injured reserve. Injury Page.

Secondary Personnel Changes Work: Dick Jauron said before the game against the Chargers the Bills would have to get creative in order to slow down the Chargers passing attack. Perry Fewell deserves huge kudos for keeping the Chargers in check despite missing Terrence McGee and Ashton Youboty who were active but didn't play. Ko Simpson also played very sparingly as he recovers from his hamstring injury. Even if he wasn't banged up, his playing time was likely to be limited. The Bills decided to use Bryan Scott in Donte Whitner's strong safety spot while Whitner played free safety. The reasoning was that the bigger Scott can stop the running of LaDainan Tomlinson and more importantly be able to cover Antonio Gates. In passing situations Whitner moved to the nickle while George Wilson played free safety. Whitner also played some cornerback and was successful in all three roles.

Monday October 20, 2008

DiGiorgio, Butler Biggest Injuries: John DiGiorgio is undergoing an MRI today to see how bad the knee injury is that he suffered in yesterday's win over the Chargers. He was carted off the field and Dick Jauron said he's not optimistic about it. Brad Butler said he is ok after spraining his knee yesterday. He was walking without crutches after the game. He did come back and then leave the game again. Brian Moorman suffered a cramp but did remain in the game. Injury Page.
