Physical Practices Mark Training Camp

Short Practice Today: The Bills held a shorter practice today which was expected with the players getting tomorrow off. Cornell Brown suffered the latest injury for the Bills. Chan Gailey said he just tweaked something and shouldn't be out too long. Kyle Williams was back on the practice field and was full go. He missed a few days with a hand injury.

Brown To Be Honored: Former Bill Ruben Brown will be the 25th recipient of the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Distinguished Service Award given by the Monday Quarterback Club. He will be honored during the November 14th game against the Detroit Lions. Brown played nine seasons in Buffalo and went to eight Pro Bowls at guard. He still lives in the Buffalo area.

Spiller Practices: C.J. Spiller made his official Bills debut tonight when he took part in the night practice. He fielded some punts in a rotation with Leodis McKelvin and Roscoe Parrish and signed autographs after the practice. He also addressed the media before the session. Parrish left practice early as he limped off and did not return. Chan Gailey said it's nothing serious. A new addition to the non participant list was RB Chad Simpson. The offense looked a bit better tonight then they have the past few days as Trent Edwards made a few plays including a 66 yard bomb to Lee Evans.

Practice Pushed Back: C.J. Spiller will take part in his first practice as a Bill tonight when the Bills hit the field. The team officially announced his signing. Tonight's practice has been pushed back a half hour and will start at 7:30. No reason was given for the time change.

Spiller Expected Today: The Bills have yet to confirm the signing of C.J. Spiller but reports say he is expected at camp sometime today. There is a chance he will be on the practice field for tonight's session. Front Office Page.

Spiller Signed: ESPN reporting that the Bills have signed C.J. Spiller to a 5 year deal worth $25 Million. With incentives it can max out at $37.5 Million and includes $20.8 Million in guaranteed money. This puts him at the high end of his slot as the ninth pick in the draft.

15 Players Out: The Bills hit the practice field this morning for a closed workout. 15 players are sidelined according to WGR. One player back on the field is Chris Kelsay. He has been sidelined with a shoulder injury since hurting it on day one of camp. They will hold a night practice open to the public who have tickets for the event.

Wood Out Again: For the first time in training camp Eric Wood is missing a second straight practice today. Chan Gailey has said all along that he would be brought along slowly as he rounds back into shape from his broken leg last year. The O-line woes continue as WGR is reporting that Jason Watkins came off the field with trainers and so did Kyle Williams. The starting nose tackle had his hand wrapped. Players being held out for the first time in camp today are David Nelson, Derek Schouman, and Cornell Green. According to the team's website Nelson may have tweaked something last night. Green and Schouman may be just getting rest. Injury Page.

Bills Practice In The Rain: The new tough attitude of the Chan Gailey era continues at training camp. The team is practicing on the grass field in the rain instead of moving to turf or inside like they used to do. The coach isn't letting a little mud get in the way. There was a heavy rain storm about an hour before practice began at 3pm. NFL officials are making their yearly visit to St. Johns Fisher. Officials go to each team's training camp to go over rule changes and to take in a practice session to discuss plays that would be called penalties in a game. They are expected to spend a couple of days at camp.

Defense Leads The Way In Last Night's Practice: The defense dominated the practice last night especially in the passing game. That made Chan Gailey feel good for the defense but bad for the offense. He would not comment specifically on the play of Trent Edwards. He was encouraged by the running game which he feels has performed well so far in camp. Gailey said he continues to evaluate players individually not as units. Gailey gave the team the morning off yesterday because he felt they earned it and were getting a little sluggish and needed the time off. He felt they were a little more energized for the night practice because of it.

Schobel Officially Released: The Bills have officially released Aaron Schobel ending his 9 year association with the Bills. He finished his Bills career 2nd on the team's all time sack list with 78. Buddy Nix called the move the fair thing to do and in the best interest of the team and Schobel. If he does decide to retire, he will retire as a Bill. Schobel hasn't decided yet what he'll do but all signs point to him playing for one more year somewhere else. Front Office Page.

Schobel To Be Released: Adam Schefter, who is at Bills camp today, reports that the Bills are planning on releasing Aaron Schobel today. That will make him a free agent and allow him to sign with any team. Buddy Nix announced on Monday that the team would part ways with Schobel but at that point they had no plans to release him. He is currently on the reserved/did not report list.

Morning Practice Cancelled: The Bills have decided to cancel this morning's closed practice. They will have an open night practice tonight. No word on why it was cancelled but it may be to give the players a break after a very tough first week of camp. The news was to the dismay of Adam Schefter as ESPN is at Bills camp today and were planning live reports.

Easley Misses Practice: It was a hot and humid day on the practice field at St. Johns Fisher College. Marcus Easley was the newest non-participant because of injury. He came down akwardly on his knee last night and was experiencing some soreness. Ed Wang did have surgery today for a hand injury, not a leg injury as previously thought. He is out indefintiely. Chan Gailey updated the status of Danny Batten, saying the rookie will miss 2-6 weeks with his shoulder injury. Injury Page.

Nothing New In Spiller Talks: Buddy Nix spoke to the media after today's single practice session and said there is nothing new to report on contract talks with C.J. Spiller. He did say if he isn't signed in a few days then he'll have more to say. Chan Gailey said his holdout is hurting his progress and he hopes to have him there as soon as possible. Spiller is one of just two first round picks that is still unsigned.

Wang May Need Surgery: Chan Gailey spoke to the media last night after practice and said that Ed Wang may need surgery and would be out a significant amount of time. The nature of the injury was not disclosed but Gailey said it's not related to the left high ankle sprain he suffered in the OTAs. Wang was on the sidelines yesterday with his lower right leg wrapped. The injury news wasn't good for another draft pick as well. Gailey said the shoulder injury suffered by Danny Batten is fairly significant and he will be out indefinitely. He also watched practice with his right arm in a sling. He injured it on Sunday in a collision with another draft pick, Kyle Calloway. Undrafted rookie OL Cordaro Howard is out with a head injury. He had been practicing very well. Injury Page.

Monday August 2, 2010

No Release For Schobel: Buddy Nix told the media after this morning's practice that Aaron Schobel will remain on the reserve/did not report list and will not be released. They will wait until he decides what to do and then will try to work out a trade with possible teams that Schobel would want to play for. Schobel told AP that he will play this year.

Schobel "Relieved": The AP contacted Aaron Schobel after Buddy Nix announced the team was moving on. Schobel said he was told he would be released if he reported. He said he understands the move and would have done the same thing if he was in the Bills shoes. He said he was sort relieved by the move. He went on to say he has no regrets and won't bad mouth the organization and appreciated the team, fans, and Ralph Wilson. Schobel had no plans to retire but will take two weeks to decide what his next move is and said he will play one more season for someone else.

Bills Moving On From Schobel: During the morning workout, Buddy Nix announced to reporters that the team was moving forward without Aaron Schobel. The team released a statement from Buddy Nix, "Aaron has been contemplating retirement for the past seven months, but we are at the point where we are moving forward and have informed his agent of our plans, Aaron has been a very good player for the Bills and we wish him and his family the best, but there comes a point where we have to move forward and that point is today. We are focusing on the team’s best interests." Nix is expected to talk to the media more later on.

Bills Short At Linebacker: The Bills are back on the practice field this morning in a closed session with just eight linebackers practicing according to Joe Buscaglia of WGR radio. Danny Batten is out after leaving practice early yesterday with a shoulder injury. No new news on him except he told the team's website he'll be ok. Paul Posluszny, Chris Kelsay, Kawika Mitchell, and Keith Ellison remain sidelined. Mitchell was given the day off yesterday it is interesting that he isn't practicing today either. Buscaglia tweeted that Posluszny was doing some work on the side running and stretching and testing out his groin muscle.

Bell Takes Part: It was a momentus day for Demetrius Bell yesterday at training camp. For the first time since camp started Bell took part in some of the team 11-on-11 drills. He had just been taking part in individual drills as he gets eased back into the game from his bad knee injury last season. Injury Page.

Sunday August 1, 2010

Batten Banged Up: Rookie LB Danny Batten left today's practice early with a shoulder injury. Eric Wood did not practice as he got his first day off since camp began. Chan Gailey had said Wood would require extra rest early on as he eases back in playing shape after overcoming a broken leg last season. The defense ruled the day during this afternoon's lone practice as they recorded four interceptions and had the upper hand on the offense.

Team Continues To Put Pads On: Today will be the fifth training camp practice in four days and in all likelihood they will be putting the pads on once again when they hit the field. Chan Gailey is a big believer in practicing with pads on so the players can get used to them again and he feels it helps avoid injuries. He feels to be a physical football team you need to hit and you need to have the pads on. He feels walktrhoughs help but to understand the game and leverage you need to be in pads. The players aren't complaining since they know the way they used to do things around there have not been working over the past decade.
