Bills Suffer First Loss Of The Season

Mike NugentGameday Grades: A lot of people will blame the refs for the loss since they did have a bad game and all calls went the Bengals way. There were many missed holding plays and the controversial reviews. They didn't cost the Bills the game though. The defense was terrible down the stretch and the offense struggled mightily and that will come out in the position by position report card. Gameday Grades.

Bills Lose To Bengals : You live by the comeback, you die by the comeback. Mike Nugent hit a 43 yard field goal as time expired to lift the Bengals to a 23-20 upset win over the Bills giving Buffalo their first loss of the season. This game was the opposite of the last two as the Bills opened up a 17-3 lead at the half before the Bengals roared back after halftime. The Bills gained the lead on a Bryan Scott interception return for a score and a Fred Jackson one yard touchdown run. The Bengals took control in the second half and closed the gap on a 17 yards touchdown pass from Andy Dalton to Jermaine Gresham. They tied the game with 4:09 to go on a Dalton QB keeper. Three pivotal replay reviews went against the Bills and deflated them at key points in the game. Bills Blitz.

Bell Hurt: Demetrius Bell hurt his right shoulder in the fourth quarter and did not return. Marcell Dareus left the game in the 2nd quarter after hurting his elbow but put a brace on it and returned to the game. Fred Jackson seemd to bang up his right arm and missed a play but returned and seemed ok. C.J. Spiller limped off on the next play but returned quickly as well. Injury Page.

Gameday Inactives: Terrence McGee, Kraig Urbik, Aaron Williams, and Chris White are inactive with injuries. The healthy inactives are: Sam Young, Terrence Wheatley, and Kellen Heard. Torell Troup and Lee Smith are active for the first time this year. Troup is over his lower back injury and Smith is now the number two tight end since David Martin was released.

Clear, Crisp Day: Fall is in the air in Cincinnati for the first football game in October. Today's game will be played under sunny skies with a gametime temperature of around 56° climbing into the upper 50s. Wind may be a factor as it will be out of the North Northwest at 17mph making it feel like the low 50s.

Urbik Upgraded: Kraig Urbik practiced on Friday and has been upgraded to doubtful although Chan Gailey ruled him out yesterday. It is unlikely that has changed. Terrence McGee, Aaron Williams, and Chris White were the only three not practicing today and have been ruled out. Injury Page.

Moats On The Move: The Bills human yo-yo was at it again, Arthur Moats has switched positions once again. During the open portion of today's practice Moats was getting reps back at outside linebacker. He was moved inside when the lockout ended but now is back at the position that he thrived in last year. Moats told WGR's Joe Buscaglia that he will do what they say and he doesn't really think about anymore. He has been told he will get some pass rushing opportunities on Sunday. Depth Chart.

Johnson Returns: As expected Stevie Johnson returned to practice today after resting his injured groin on Wednesday. This pattern may continue for a while but he will play on Sunday. Terrence McGee, Aaron Williams, Kraig Urbik, and Chris White all sat again. All but Urbik have been ruled out for Sunday. McGee continues to do more work on the side with a trainer so he is improving. Injury Page.

Fitz Honored: The honors keep rolling in for the Bills. Ryan Fitzpatrick has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September. He led the Bills to a 3-0 start and 2nd in the AFC with 9 touchdown passes and a 103.5 QB rating. He is the first Bill to win the award since Drew Bledsoe won it in September of 2002. He is only the third Bills QB to ever win the award.

Training Camp Renewed: The Bills are holding a press conference today to announce a new deal to keep training camp at St. Johns Fisher College. The only hold up had been reconfiguring the fields so they will have a 100 yard grass field. That was taken away this past year because of the construction of a new track and field stadium on the campus.

Bills Try To Avoid Trap Game: The Bills head to Cincinnati as a road favorite for the first time since 2008. They also will be defending the new longest winning streak against an opponent in the NFL right now. Since they beat the Patriots their 10 game winning streak against the Bengals is the longest current streak in the league. Who would have thought after three weeks we would worry about a trap game for the Bills? The potential is there but this team does seem focused. Game Preview.

Johnson Sits: As expected Stevie Johnson did not practice today as he rests his groin injury. He likely will be back on the field tomorrow. Terrence McGee, Aaron Williams, Kraig Urbik, and Chris White all sat as well but Kirk Morrison and Torrel Troup did practice. McGee did some work on the side with a trainer so he is improving. Injury Page.

Lindell Honored: Rian Lindell was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. He got the honor for hitting both field goals and all four extra points in the win over New England. It included the game winning 28 yard kick as time expired. It is the third time Lindell has won the honor.

Practice Squad Addition: The Bills have added CB Brandon Bing to the practice squad. He takes the spot vacated by Terrence Wheatley when he was activated yesterday. Bing was an undrafted free agent signed by Denver but released before the season. He played his college ball in Rutgers and had 13 career starts. Front Office Page.

Martin Released: The Bills needed to add numbers to the depleted cornerbacks corps, they did that today. They have activated CB Terrence Wheatley from the practice squad. To make room they released veteran TE David Martin. Wheatley was a 2nd round draft pick of the Patriots in 2008 and appeared in 11 games for them over two seasons. Front Office Page.

The Euphoria Of The Big Win: Life is usually tough for our correspondent Tony Bogyo as a Bills fan living in Boston. It isn't tough for him now as he writes this week about the euphoria and all eight steps he has gone through since Rian Lindell's kick sailed through the uprights late Sunday afternoon. Complete Story.

Bills Thin At CB: Chan Gailey addressed the media today and updated the injury situation. The team is now extremely thin at cornerback as the injury suffered by Aaron Williams will keep him sidelined a few weeks. Terrence McGee is not ready to return either. Rookie 7th round pick Justin Rogers will be active for the first time in his career and will have to step up according to Gailey. Chris White suffered a hamstring injury yesterday and will be sidelined a few weeks. In positive injury news, Gailey said Kraig Uribk, Kirk Morrison, and Torrel Troup all have a chance to return this week against Cincinnati. Injury Page.
