NEWS ARCHIVES - DEC 9TH - DEC 15TH, 2013 PREVIOUS WEEK

Bills Pick Up Needed Road Win

Robert WoodsGameday Grades: The Bills got the win but were far from perfect as they were very inconsistent causing the game to go through many ebbs and flows. The Bills had a chance to put the game away in the third quarter but allowed the Jags to hang around. They also fell behind early because of a poor start. Gameday Grades.

Bills Hold On For Win: Stephon Gilmore picked off a Chad Henne pass in the end zone with 3:15 left to allow the Bills to hang on for a 27-20 road victory in Jacksonville. Jim Leonhard had a big tackle for a four yard loss two plays earlier as the Bills used a great goal line stand to seal the win. EJ Manuel hit Frank Summers with a one yard TD pass with 9:35 remaining to give the Bills the winning margin of victory. Jacksonville opened up a 10-3 lead before the Bills offense got going with 17 straight second quarter points as Manuel hit Robert Woods for a score and ran one in to give the Bills a 20-10 halftime lead. Jacksonville battled back to tie it early in the fourth quarter. The Bills ran for 198 yards as C.J. Spiller ran for 67 and Fred Jackson had 80 yards on the ground. Bills Blitz.

Dareus, Williams Hurt: Marcell Dareus left the game late with an ankle injury and was ruled out the rest of the way. Aaron Williams suffered a rib injury in the fourth quarter and didn't return. Marquise Goodwin got banged up when he took a helmet to helmet hit but he was ok. Injury Page.

Alonso, Urbik Will Play: Kiko Alonso and Kraig Urbik are both active and will play. They were both gametime decisions after being limited in practice this week and being listed as questionable. How much they'll play is another question, Alonso has not missed a snap all season. Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reported he looked pretty good in pregame warmups moving around well. Brandon Smith is out with an injury although he likely would have been inactive anyway. The other inactives are: Jeff Tuel, Antoine McClain, Ronnie Wingo, Tony Moeaki, Jonathan Meeks, and Mark Asper. The Jaguars are without starters Maurice Jones-Drew, Johnathan Cyprien, Will Rackley and Cecil Shorts. Wingo is back on the bench in favor of two fullbacks being active.

Decent North Florida Weather: Any overnight and early morning thunderstorms should end in time for kickoff. The gametime temperature is expected to be 62° with winds out of the WNW at 10mph. There should be cloudy skies for most of the game.

Jags Add To Report: The Jaguars added LG Will Rackley to the injury report as questionable with a concussion. The Bills left snowy Buffalo this morning and landed in rainy Jacksonville this afternoon. The Jaguars also will likely be without Maurice Jones-Drew starting safety Johnathan Cyprien, both are listed as doubtful. Injury Page.

Alonso Tweaks Knee: Kiko Alonso tweaked his knee in practice today and is now listed as questionable for Sunday's game. He wants to play and will be monitored over the next 48 hours to see if he can go. He is now a gametime decision. Doug Marrone had said he would play unless anything changed and it did today. If he can't go, Arthur Moats will start in his place. Kraig Urbik returned to the practice field today and is also listed as questionable. Brandon Smith remains sidelined and has been ruled out. That is not an issue since he's normally inactive anyway. Kyle Williams and Jonathan Meeks are listed as probable. For the Jaguars, Maurice Jones-Drew is doubtful and Cecil Shorts is questionable. Injury Page.

Thursday December 12, 2013

Smith, Urbik Sit: Kraig Urbik and Brandon Smith were the only two players not practicing today. Smith hurt his ankle in practice yesterday and Urbik is out with a foot injury and wearing a walking boot. He is expected to be a gametime decision and his progress will not be updated this week. Kiko Alonso was limited again but Doug Marrone said that was more the coaching staff holding him back as a precaution. He is still on target to play on Sunday and will most likely be listed as probable. He was seen by the media limping around a bit during the open portion of the practice. Injury Page.

Back To Florida The Bills head back to Florida for a second straight weekend as they play another four win team in the surging Jacksonville Jaguars who have won three straight games. Buffalo will try to bounce back from their abysmal showing in Tampa last week. Game Preview.

Wednesday December 11, 2013

Williams, Urbik Sit: Kyle Urbik was a non participant in practice today with a foot injury. It was in a walking boot and he will be a gametime decision. If he can't go J.J. Unga will get the start in his place. Doug Marrone said on Monday he wants to get Unga more work anyway. Kiko Alonso was limited in practice with a knee injury but is expected to be fine for Sunday. Kyle Williams took his usual day off as he did not practice. He is resting his Achilles that still bothers him after offseason surgery. Injury Page.

Young Player Development: With the Bills all but officially eliminated from the playoff race it is time to evaluate the young players. That evaluation began last week and Doug Marrone liked what he saw from J.J. Unga and Ty Powell. The coach said Unga will get more of a look over the last three games. He is more comfortable at left guard so that means he will eat in to Kraig Urbik's playing time even though he is much better than the always struggling Doug Legursky at left guard. Powell did some good things but it will be harder to get him more reps, according to Marrone, because of the quality of play ahead of him from Manny Lawson and Jerry Hughes. The coach also said the need to get the ball in the hands of Marquise Goodwin more. He would also like to get T.J. Graham more involved but he has to show more consistency first. Depth Chart.

Roster Moves: The Bills made some roster moves today as they released Jamaal Westerman and activated S Johnathan Meeks from the injured reserve designated to return list. The team also swapped wide receivers on the practice squad by releasing Tommy Streeter and bringing back Brandon Kaufman. Westerman was inactive for the first time all year last week and doesn't fit into the future plans of the team as Ty Powell is getting his reps. Meeks was a fifth round draft pick who is now healthy. Kaufman was with the team during the summer and did some good things. Front Office Page.

Was The Optimism Warranted? This week Tony Bogyo takes a look at what the pathetic loss to the Bucs means. Does it mean the team isn't heading in the right direction and are the same old Bills? Or is it just growing pains that happens with a team with a rookie QB and rookie head coach. Complete Story.

Monday December 9, 2013

Marrone To Simplify Things: A dejected Doug Marrone said after the game that it is time to simplify things for EJ Manuel. They had been giving him more and more and going faster with progressions but they now need to re-evaluate that. The coach stressed they will not be starting over but just getting him re-started.

Post Game Meeting: Doug Marrone got to the podium after the game later than usual as the team captains addressed the team following the game. The coach allowed the captains and other players to speak and clear the air about what has happened and what they need to do going forward. They talked about accountability and needing to improve. Coach Marrone spoke after the players and wrapped everything up.
