Bills Fall To Steelers 19-16 On Last Second FG

Who Helped Themselves: Doug Carpenter helped himself with field goals of 37 and 53 yards in the first half and a game tying 44 yard field goal late. He had to handle the kickoffs since Dustin Hopkins was inactive and did well which may mean the end to the carrying two kickers thought. All five of them went into the end zone and four were touchbacks. He did miss a 49 yarder in the 4th quarter. Fred Jackson looked good running and receiving as he caught 7 passes for 28 yards and added 27 yards on six carries. Robert Woods looked good as he was targeted six times and made three catches for a game high 49 yards. Scott Chandler had four catches for 40 yards. Stefan Charles had two sacks, one of them forced a fumble that Landon Cohen returned 59 yards to setup the Bills only touchdown. Nickell Robey had a nice interception.

Who Hurt Themselves: EJ Manuel just can't do anything in the red zone and did not look good in this game after coming off his best practice of the summer. Thad Lewis was very inaccurate completing just one pass to each team in six attempts. Jeff Tuel didn't do much better fumbling the game away in the final minute. Cyrus Kouandjio gave up the sack to Tuel. Bryce Brown got in the game late and had only 12 yards on six carries. Alan Branch didn't get into the game until the final minutes and Doug Marrone said he's fighting for a roster spot. The entire starting defensive unit didn't help themselves after giving up two touchdowns on the first two Steeler possessions.

Manuel Struggles: Jeff Tuel was sacked and fumbled the ball away with :15 left in the game that setup the game winning 20 yard field goal by Shaun Suisham. That play saved everyone from the dreaded preseason overtime as the Steelers beat the Bills 19-16. Less than two minutes earlier Dan Carpenter tied the game with a 44 yard kick as he hit three of four attempts on the day. The Bills wanted to get a touchdown from their first team offense and Doug Marrone kept the starters in for the entire first half as they ran 45 plays but still couldn't get in the end zone. They went 0 for 2 on 4th downs in the first half and failed on two plays from the two yard line just before halftime against the Steelers 2nd string. Manuel didn't have Sammy Watkins because of his injured ribs and went 17 of 28 for 148 yards and one interception but no touchdowns. Ben Roethlisberger threw touchdown passes on each of his first two series including a 76 yarder to Antonio Brown on their second offensive play. Boobie Dixon had a one yard scoring plunge after Stefan Charles had a strip sack that Landon Cohen returned 59 yards to setup the Bills only touchdown.

Watkins Injures Ribs: Sammy Watkins injured his ribs on the Bills opening possession tonight but it is just a contusion according to the team. He did give them a scare and the feeling is he will be ok. He is expected to be fine. He got hurt on an incomplete pass when a secondary defender went up over this back and got him with a knee to the side. He got off the field in discomfort and then went down on the sidelines. He went to the locker room and did not return. There was no surprise on the inactive list as the eight players we have listed on our injury page (excluding Kiko Alonso are not playing. Jonathan Meeks, Marquise Goodwin, Tony Moeaki, Cordy Glenn, Leodis McKelvin, Dustin Hopkins, Ty Powell, and Chris Williams are not playing. Doug Legursky was the surprise starter at left guard. Kraig Urbik got all the first team reps at right guard.

Kelly Looking For Partners: Tim Graham of the Buffalo News is reporting that the Bon Jovi Toronto group reached out to Jim Kelly about teaming up to buy the team. It is seen as an act of desperation by both sides. The Bon Jovi group knows any chance of getting the team is slowly slipping away. Jim Kelly is trying to find a group to be a part of as a minority owner. The report was quickly denied on twitter by Jill Kelly who said they would never been involved with a group that wanted to move the team. Graham backs up his story saying he has 7 sources. Jim and his brother Dan reportedly are making heavy demands to be part of an ownership group including control of all football related matters. These terms were reportedly unacceptable to Kelly's friend Donald Trump. WGRZ's Adam Benigni reports that Kelly has talked to Tom Golisano as well but not the Pegulas. It is unkown if Kelly is still aligned with Jeffrey Gundlach on this potential partnership with Bon Jovi. The two reporteldy met with the trust and were looking for them to find a majority partner for them.

Manuel Shines: By all media accounts it seems like EJ Manuel had by far his best day of training camp when the Bills and Steelers held their second day of joint practices yesterday as he was very accurate and decisive with his passing. Mike Williams said it was the best he ever saw him throw the football. Sammy Watkins made another highlight play that started going viral yesterday when he totally faked out a Steelers cornerback to get wide open in the end zone. Leodis McKelvin took more team reps yesterday and seems to be closer to being full go but isn't there yet. Cordy Glenn continues to take part in individual drills but hasn't been cleared for team drills as of yet. The same players that sat on Wednesday sat out yesterday as Tony Moeaki, Marquise Goodwin, Ty Powell, Dustin Hopkins, Jonathan Meeks, and Chris Williams remain sidelined. Injury Page.

Bon Jovi Group Slip Up: The Buffalo Fan Alliance uncovered documents that suggests the Toronto group plans on moving the Bills to Toronto if they are successful in buying the club. A press release refers to Rogers Communications consultant Roger Rai as part of the ownership group that is "attempting to acquire and move the Buffalo Bills to Toronto." Rai told the AP that it was a misinterpretation by a co-worker who wrote the biography for the press release. Rai says he's not involved in the bid personally. The group reportedly met with the trust in New York City on Tuesday. John Kryk of the Toronto Sun said the meeting was seen as going through the motions as neither side expects the group to win the bid. The AP reports that the Pegulas met with the trust on Wednesday in New York. Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reports that a source that was involved in the bidding process says it's Pegula's to lose and that the Bon Jovi group is disorganized and unfocused.

Physical Practice With Steelers: The Bills and Steelers got together for their first of two joint practices at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe Pennsylvania and it was a very physical practice with some pushing and shoving. By all media accounts the Steelers got the better of the Bills as they were more physical and their defense dominated a Bills offense that featured a lot of dropped passes and inaccurate throws. Leodis McKelvin was back on the field in team drills for the first time in a couple of weeks. Not taking part in the workout were Tony Moeaki and Marquise Goodwin who are still battling hamstring injuries. Chris Williams who continues to be sidelined with a back injury. Jonathan Meeks with his neck problem, Dustin Hopkins was out with a groin injury while Ty Powell was sitting with an undisclosed medical problem.

No Spiller Trade Talk: If you do a twitter search on C.J. Spiller you will see a lot of crazy trade rumors which Doug Whaley tried to put to rest before today's joint practice session. He said he has not taken one phone call regarding Spiller. He understands why people are dotting the lines between the Bills depth at running back and teams without such depth but there has been no talks. With the additions of Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon to go along with Fred Jackson's contract extension the speculation has run rampant that they would try to move Spiller in the final year of his contract. I don't see it happening since he is still their best back and they are in win now mode with the uncertain future of the organization.

Season Ticket Numbers Rise: The Bills announced yesterday that they are now over 46,000 season ticket holders which is the most amount since 2009. Season tickets remain on sale until the Tampa Bay preseason game a week from Saturday. The team also changed their policy on announcing sellouts. They will no longer announce when a game is soldout until the blackout deadline three days before each week's kickoff. Chief Marketing Office Marc Honan did say the first five home games against Miami, San Diego, New England, Minnesota and Green Bay are selling very well. There is significant inventory left for the final three home games against the Jets, Browns, and Packers.

Practice Cancelled: The Bills cancelled this morning's practice due to the weather at St. John Fisher College. They held a walkthrough in the gym before they head to Latrobe Pennsylvania for two days of workouts with the Pittsburgh Steelers. They will practice at Saint Vincent College tomorrow from 2:55pm to 5:00pm and then again on Thursday from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. They will have Friday off before they play the Steelers at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on Saturday night at 7:30pm.

CB Swap: The Bills made a move at the bottom of the depth chart at corneback yesterday. They released Michael Carter and signed Sam Miller. Carter struggled throughout camp and was beaten for a long score in the Hall of Fame game. Miller was with the team as a rookie tryout players during the team minicamp. Front Office Page.
