Bills Lose Preseason Opener

Wynn Likely Done For Year: Rex Ryan said after practice today that Jairus Wynn is likely done for the year with a serious ACL injury. This means recently signed embattled IK Enemkpali has a better chance of making the team as a pass rusher. On the field today, EJ Manuel saw almost all his reps with the third team, Ryan explained he will see almost all his action against Cleveland on Thursday night with the third team so that is why he is practicing with that unit. He would not rule out Manuel getting 2nd team reps however. Tyrod Taylor and Matt Cassel split first team reps with Taylor picking up where he left off on Friday night throwing the ball very well. Bryce Brown left practice early with a slight hamstring injury and Tobais Palmer left practice after getting sick. Percy Harvin is set to return from a hip injury on Monday. Injury Page.

Carpenter Activated: The Bills have activated Dan Carpenter off of the Active/Non-Football Injury List as he hit the practice field with his teammates this morning for the first time this training camp. That leaves just Cam Thomas and Leodis McKelvin on injured lists. Richie Incognito also returned to practice today after missing a couple of days with an ankle injury. Jairus Wynn, Marcus Easley, and Corbin Bryant sat out after they all suffered knee injuries on Friday night. None of those injuries are considered serious. Percy Harvin remains sidelined with an undisclosed injury. Anthony Dixon, Fred Jackson, Alex Carrington, and Kyle Williams remain sidelined. The team did not practice in pads this morning staying in shells on a hot morning in Pittsford. This should be a less physical day with back to back practices coming up against Cleveland Monday and Tuesday.

Panthers Beat Bills 25-24: Joe Webb hit Wegher for a 42 yard catch and run with :54 seconds left and then completed the two point conversion to give the Panthers a 25-24 come from behind victory over the Bills in the preseason opener. EJ Manuel hit Deonte Thompson with a beautiful 51 yard touchdown bomb late in the third quarter to give the Bills the 24-17 lead. Tyrod Taylor used his feet and his arm to lead the Bills to two second quarter touchdown drives as Karlos Williams had a one yard scoring plunge and Bryce Brown ran one in from four yards out. The Bills other points came on a 52 yard field goal by Jordan Gay. Cam Newton and Derek Anderson each threw touchdown passes for Carolina. Jairus Wynn, Corbin Bryant, and Marcus Easley left the game early after getting banged up. Injury Page.

Who Helped Themselves: All three quarterbacks helped themselves in the loss but none more than Tyrod Taylor who led the Bills to two touchdown including a 90 yard drive. He completed 5 of 8 passes for 49 yards but two of the incompletions were drops. He added 47 yards on six carries. Rex Ryan said he will start against Cleveland. Matt Cassel was solid in leading the Bills starters completing 7 of 8 passes, all short ones, for 45 yards and got them into field goal position but Jordan Gay missed it. EJ Manuel was 4 for 8 for 77 yards and the victim of a couple of drops and two bad snaps from center. He threw a beautiful bomb for a touchdown to Deonte Thompson who is making a bid for a roster spot. Also helping themselves were two running backs as Bryce Brown led the team with 52 yards rushing on just six carries and a touchdown while Karlos Williams had 40 yards on 14 carries and a score.

Who Hurt Themselves: Ronald Darby looked like a rookie as he struggled to finish plays as he was picked on often by Derek Anderson. TE Matthew Mulligan had two penalties to thwart a drive. Chris Hogan and Marquies Gray each had a dropped pass. Alex Kupper had two bad snaps while playing center. Matt Simms played most of the fourth quarter and couldn't do much.

Football Is Back! Yes, it's only the first preseason game but NFL football if finally back as the Bills face off against the Carolina Panthers tonight at The Ralph. Matt Cassel gets the start at quarterback and a solid performance will go a long way in helping him wrap up the starting job to start the season. Tyrod Taylor was the sharpest of the three quarterbacks during Wednesday night's practice and will go with the 2nd team. EJ Manuel by all accounts continues to remain in third spot of the three horse race and will likely not play until late in the game. We will have our list of players who helped themselves and hurt themselves by their performances in the game late tonight. In other news, The Bills came to an injury settlement with waived/injured WR Justin Brown which grants him his release. Front Office Page.

Enemkpali Statement: LB IK Enemkpali was at St. Johns Fisher College today and passed his physical with the team. This afternoon he took to the podium and issued a one minute statement without taking questions. He said, "I apologize...It should have never happened. I should have walked away from the situation. I'm very grateful, thankful and happy to be a Bill. I look forward to being a good teammate."

Taylor Sharp: Tyrod Taylor was the sharpest of the three quarterbacks during Wednesday night's practice. Matt Cassel regressed a bit from a solid showing on Tuesday. EJ Manuel by all accounts continues to remain in third spot of the three horse race. Stefan Charles limped off and did not finish the workout while Percy Harvin had a maintenance day and was no where to be seen. Deonte Thompson got a lot of reps with the first team. The team has Thursday off and will travel back to Buffalo to play the Panthers on Friday night.

Bills Claim Smith Puncher: The Bills have claimed LB IK Enemkpali off of waiver from the Jets. He was a 6th round draft pick of Rex Ryan's last year in New York. He was released yesterday after punching Geno Smith in the locker room and breaking his jaw putting the Jets starting QB out of action for 6-10 weeks. He appeared in 6 games for the Jets last year and made three tackles. He was mostly a special teams player who will have a hard time making the roster on this defense. Rex Ryan admitted this was his waiver claim saying that Doug Whaley is showing a lot of confidence in him with this move. He said there is no guarantee he makes the team and said he could play Friday night. Ryan took the high road when asked about the incident at Jets camp yesterday and said he has not talked to Enemkpali yet but knows the man he is. The Bills designated Clay Burton as waived/injured to make room for Enemkpali on the roster.

Bills Add CB: The Bills have signed CB Lavelle Westbrooks to help with a shortage at the position because of injuries to Leodis McKelvin and Ross Cockrell. Westbrooks was a seventh round draft pick for the Bengals in 2014. He was waived-injured last summer after getting hurt in training camp with Cincinnati. To make room for him on the roster they waived-injured Caleb Holley who suffered a a hamstring injury on Monday. Front Office Page.

Taylor 2nd One In: The reps in practice today were not divided equally during today's practice as Matt Cassel got the most reps followed by Tyrod Taylor with EJ Manuel getting the least reps. Rex Ryan confirmed after practice that Taylor will play with the twos during Friday night's preseason game. The Bills ran more read option with Taylor and he had some success in it. Cassel continued his better play of late while Manuel struggled again. Richie Incognito is the newest man on the injury report as he will miss a day or two with an ankle injury. Aaron Williams was back on the field for the Bills after being sidelined a couple of days. Ross Cockrell is expected to miss 2 to 3 weeks with a knee injury suffered in Saturday's scrimmage.

Depth Chart Released: The Bills were back on the practice fields of St. Johns Fisher College Monday for day 9 of training camp after a day off on Sunday. Rex Ryan announced that Matt Cassel will start at quarterback on Friday night against Carolina in the opening preseason game. That didn't matter on the team's newly released first unofficial depth chart where all three quarterbacks are listed as #1. We are constantly updating our depth chart with where we think things are with the team. The team had their first squirmish of camp yesterday when Robert Woods and Stephon Gilmore exchanged punches. The team is back on the field this morning for their 10th practice of training camp. Depth Chart.

Back On The Field: The Bills are back on the practice fields of St. Johns Fisher College today for day 9 of training camp after a day off on Sunday. Kyle Williams left practice early after getting tangled up with Karlos Williams. He injured his right leg and they stretched it out on the sidelines before he walked off very gingerly to the locker room. It was diagnosed as a quad injury and he should miss 3-4 days. Alex Carrington also will miss a couple of days with a bruised roator cuff. Caleb Holley went down with a non contact leg injury and was carted off the field with a second degree hamstring injury that will have him sidelined a while. Marquise Goodwin had an upset stomach and did not finish practice. The Bills got a few injured players back today as Jarius Wynn, John Conner, Clay Burton, and Deonte Thompson returned to practice in some capacity. Fred Jackson, Aaron Williams, Boobie Dixon, Jimmy Gaines, Ross Cockrell, Merrill Noel, and BJ Larsen all are still out. Seantrel Henderson remains with the starters at right tackle and we have now updated our depth chart to reflect that. Injury Page.

Roster Move: Three days after being released the Bills have brought back DE Erik Williams. He was released on Thursday to make room RB Bronson Hill. He takes the roster spot of WR Justin Brown who has been designated waived/injured. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent from Bethune-Cookman on May 4th. Depth Chart.
