Bills Wrap Up Offseason Program With Mandatory Minicamp

Watkins To Be Ready? Sammy Watkins thinks he will be ready for training camp. He told tsn.ca that he may sit out the first two or three days of training camp but should be good to go after undergoing surgery for a broken foot this offseason. That cost him all of the team's offseason program. He did hedge his bet though saying there isn't a timetable and they won't rush it. While most of the players have scattered across the country for the next six weeks, Watkins said he is staying in Buffalo most of the time to concentrate on getting healthy.

Roster Move: The Bills signed of the players they brought in for a tryout during the mandatory minicamp. They added OT Justin Renfrow to make room they placed S Phillip Thomas on the waived/injured list. The former Miami Hurricane, Renfrow has been on four teams in two years since college. He played defensive end at the beginning of his college career before moving to the offensive line. He is still a raw prospect. Front Office Page.

Minicamp Wrapup: Rex and Rob Ryan both addressed the media after minicamp wrapped up yesterday and there were some interesting comments as you would expect from the Ryan brothers. Rob said that Preston Brown will be a star. Rex said that the Bills won the offseason. That comment raised eyebrows but what he meant was that the team was much further ahead than last year on the field, in the playbook, and in the weight room. The coach also singled out Dez Lewis as a receiver that has stepped up in the wide open competition at wide receiver. Ed Reed also addressed the media and said watching film told him last year's problem was that the defense didn't communciate enough and that has now changed already. Dennis Thurman said his role as defensive coordinator has not changed at all with the arrival of Rob Ryan. The head coach held a lottery that allowed a player and a coach to take the last day of minicamp off. The winners were Corey Graham and Greg Roman. Rex said normally he's excited for this vacation but he can't wait to get back to work after winning the offseason he now wants to win July meaning he wants the players to stay in shape and out of trouble.

Injury Update: Rex Ryan said thatKyle Williams feels he's pretty much ready to practice but they won't rush it when training camp starts although it sounds like he will be on the field pretty quickly at St. Johns Fisher. It is still unknown when Sammy Watkins will hit the field but the coach does expect him to practice sometime during training camp. Jerry Hughes missed the last two days of the minicamp with an illness. It isn't known when Seantrel Henderson will be ready to take the field as he tries to get back into football shape after his illness. Cordy Glenn has a minor foot injury but should be fine for camp along with LeSean McCoy who has an ankle issue. Marcell Dareus has a minor thumb injury but should be fine along with Aaron Williams who has a hamstring strain. Injury Page.

Minicamp Wraps: The Bills wrapped up their last practice of the offseason this morning with several veterans sitting out. The minicamp ended in a rough way when rookie guard Jamison Lalk suffered a knee injury while racing to the line of scrimmage in the two minute drill. He literally got run over. The team walked off the field while he was still down holding his knee. There were some fireworks as Ik Enemkpali and Jordan Mills got into a scuffle. The team is now off until July 30th. The players will report to St. Johns Fisher on July 29th.

Minicamp Ends: Today is the final day of the three day mandatory minicamp. When the players come off the field they will be off and away from the facilities until they report to training camp at St. Johns Fisher College on July 29th with the first practice taking place the morning of the 30th. Karlos Williams plans on spending some time over the next couple of weeks with the conditioning staff to get back into shape. Injury Page.

Karlos Overweight: The big story coming out of day one of minicamp was not the arrival of Stephon Gilmore or Marquise Goodwin but the shape Karlos Williams was in during his first appearance this offseason at One Bills Drive. Williams wasn't at the voluntary OTAs as he concentrated on the birth of his son. He showed up overweight and was not practicing as they tried to work on his conditioning on the side. Rex Ryan expressed concern over the running back's ability to lose the weight for training camp without adding to the risk of injury if he loses weight too fast. Williams said he's a professional and will lose the weight and isn't worried about it. He said he added weight when eating along with his pregnant wife.

Gilmore Holdout? Stephon Gilmore did show up at the mandatory minicamp and said his tweet about being their not to get fined was a joke paying homage to Marshawn Lynch. He did appear unhappy with his contract situation which has him playing out an option year for $11 Million. He did say he will go to training camp but didn't rule out holding out at the start saying "we'll see" to the question of will he be there when camp starts.

Back On The Field: The Bills were back on the practice field this morning and several members of the media were tweeting about the mandatory workout. Here's some notes from various tweets. Stephon Gilmore and Marquise Goodwin are back but not practicing as anticipated. LeSean McCoy took part in individual drills but was held out of team drills as they are being very careful with his tight hamstring. Karlos Williams is doing conditioning work on the side and looks a tad bigger according to Joe Buscaglia. Seantrel Henderson is not practicing but riding the bike on the side. Jerel Worthy continues to get first team reps with Kyle Williams sidelined. Manny Lawson and Ik Enemkpali spliting first team reps in Shaq Lawson's spot. Cordy Glenn is in attendance but not on the field at all for practice. Cyrus Kouandjio getting the first team reps at left tackle. Marcus Easley remains sidelined as expected. Terry Pegula was taking in practice on the sidelines. Sammy Watkins was on the field with no boot or a noticeable limp as he continues his recovery from a broken foot. Seven tryout players are in camp trying to make an impression. The team's website says those players are: WR Kain Colter from Northwestern, CB LaMarcus Farmer from Troy, Houston CB Lee Hightower, Miami OT Justin Renfro, St. Lawrence OL Ryan Schmidt, G Jacob Schunke from Towson, and Maryland G Andrew Zeller.

Minicamp Begins: Today starts the only mandatory workouts of the offseason as the team gathers for a three day minicamp. The players were back in town yesterday doing some social media stuff and signing memorabilia. Stephon Gilmore is back in town. He tweeted that he is back so he won't get fined. Some took it as a player that is disgruntled about his contract. Others took it as a toungue and cheek statement mimicking Marshawn Lynch's famed line to the Super Bowl media. He did tell the Bills twitter feed in a video message that he's happy to be back with his teammates and to get to work. Of course, he won't be doing much work as he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery. WGR and the Buffalo News both report that a longterm deal for Gilmore is not close. Marquise Goodwin is also with the team for the first time this offseason as he takes a break from preparing for the olympics. He is not expected to do any work on the field.

Bills Make Two Roster Moves: The Bills tinkered with their 90 man roster on the eve of the mandatory three day minicamp. They have signed DL Leger Douzable and OT Chris Martin. To make room they released DE Claudell Louis and OT Keith Lumpkin. Douzable visited today and has been with the Jets the past three years, two of those with Rex Ryan as his head coach. He should fit in as a situational 3-4 defensive end. Martin spent two months on the Bills practice squad last year. Lumpkin and Louis had little chance of making the team, Depth Chart.

Free Agent Visits: The Bills are reportedly bringing in former Jets DL Leger Douzable for a free agent visit today. He fits Rex Ryan's scheme well as a defensive end in the 3-4. He previously played for the Jaguars and Rams before joining the Jets as a backup defensive linemen the past three years. He is considered a run stopper but does have four sacks since joining the Jets. The Bills also reportedly are visiting with former Bowling Green QB Matt Johnson. He has originally signed with the Bengals who cut him after signing former UB QB Joe Licata. Johnson the MAC player of the year last season when he threw for nearly 5,000 yards with 46 touchdowns and just 8 interceptions.

Boom Is Back: The Bills definitely subscribe to the theory that you can never have enough running backs as they have brought back Boom Herron and released Syracuse CB Julian Whigham. Herron was on the team for part of last season and saw action when the position was decimated by injuries. The move leaves the Bills with six running backs on the depth chart. During yesterday's OTA practice they only had one back as Jonathan Williams was the only back at the workout. Whigham has struggled in workouts and had no chance of making the team. Wednesday June 8, 2016

Bills Back On The Field: Today was the 2nd of three OTA practices this week and the only one open to the media. TJ Barnes was back with the defensive line as it appears the experiment of playing him at offensive tackle is over. According to John Warrow of the Associated Press 17 players weren't practicing and 15 weren't even in attendance for the voluntary workout. Among those not working out are Cordy Glenn, Seantrel Henderson, Karlos Williams, Mike Gillislee, James Wilder Jr, Charles Clay, Sammy Watkins, Kolby Listenbee, Davonte Allen, Marquise Goodwin, and Marcus Easley. Henderson was in attendance but not practicing he was riding a bike on the side. The attendance will be much different next week when the team holds their only mandatory minicamp of the offseason from Tuesday thru Thursday. They have one more voluntary OTA tomorrow. Preston Brown created a buzz by wearing a Lebron James over his jersey at the workout.

Tuesday June 7, 2016

Jones Signs: The Bills now have their entire draft class signed as 4th round pick Cardale Jones signed his rookie deal a day after top pick Shaq Lawson signed.

Monday June 6, 2016

Lawson Signed: The Bills have signed their top draft pick as injured DE Shaq Lawson has agreed to his deal today. That leaves just 4th round pick Cardale Jones still unsigned. Lawson will likely start the season on the PUP list and should miss the first six weeks while rehabbing his shoulder injury.

Goodell On New Stadium: Roger Goodell spoke to the media at the 30th annual Jim Kelly golf tournament today and was asked about a new stadium. He said that the team does need to keep up with other facilities around the league. He did praise the Pegulas and said they know what needs to be done and will research everything. My take on it is that logic dictates there will be a new stadium when the lease expires in 2022.

Kyle Williams Improving: Kyle Williams also spoke to the media at Kelly's golf tournament. He is still rehabbing his knee but was able to play in today's tourney, he is considered the best golfer on the team. He feels he will definitely be ready to play by the opener but may not be ready for the start of training camp. He considers himself on schedule for his return.

Kelly Tourney: The Bills were scheduled to get back to work today in the final week of organized team activities. Rex Ryan has decided instead of workouts the entire team will travel to support Jim Kelly at his 30th annual golf tournament. May former teammates, opponents, and celebrities are in town. The annual auction took place last night at the Adams Mark hotel downtown. Among the people in town are Marv Levy, Bill Polian, Mary Wilson, Darryl Talley, Dan Marino, Goldberg, Roger Goodell, and Bruce DeHaven.
