Bills Get Off The Snide With Road Win

Sunday November 20, 2016

Gameday Grades: It was a tale of two halves on defense. They struggled mightily in the first half but shutdown the Bengals after halftime. Meanwhile the offense could do nothing after losing both LeSean McCoy and Robert Woods in this game. Gameday Grades.

Bills Blitz: Andy Dalton's Hail Mary pass fell incomplete into the end zone on the final play of the game allowing the Bills to escape Cincinnati with a 16-12 win. LeSean McCoy had a seven yard touchdown run on the Bills first possession but left the game with a dislocated thumb. That was the only touchdown for the Bills as they would need three Dan Carpenter field goals, including a 54 yarder, to pull off the win. Stephon Gilmore picked off two passes and returned one to the three yard line in a drive that would stall as the Bills struggled inside the five yard line in this game. Tyrod Taylor had a touchdown run called back by a holding penalty on Richie Incognito. He did not throw a touchdown pass and threw one interception on the goal line. The Bills defense struggled mightily in the first half but was lights out after halftime forcing four straight three and outs before the final drive ran out of time. Andy Dalton ran for a score and threw for another but both extra points were missed by Mike Nugent. Bills Blitz.

Injury Update: LeSean McCoy left the game late in the first half with a thumb injury and quickly went to the locker room. He did not return. It reportedly is dislocated and they couldn't pop it back in place. Robert Woods hurt his lower left knee after it got bent backwards awkardly. He walked off the field gingerly under his own power and did not return. Robert Blanton was evaluated for a concussion but he did return to the game only to leave before the final play with a leg injury. Preston Brown was shaken up in the second quarter but quickly returned. Injury Page.

Gameday Inactives: The only player ruled out on Friday was Corbin Bryant. Walter Powell is inactive after battling a hip injury all week but his injury may be more about numbers than his injury. Justin Hunter is active after being added to the report Friday with a groin injury. The healthy scratches are Cyrus Kouandjio, Brandon Spikes, Marcus Roberson, Gerald Christian, and Cardale Jones. Patrick Lewis is active for the first time all year as he will backup Ryan Groy at center. Seantrel Henderson will likely rotate in at right tackle with Jordan Mills. Spikes is a surprise inactive for the first time this year.

Gameday Weather: The cold air has finally worked in to the central and eastern United States. Today's game will be played under partly cloudy skies but cold and windy with a high temperature of 40° in Cincinnati and winds out of WNW at 21mph and gusting to 30 mph. It will only feel like the upper 20s.

Hunter Added: The Bills have added Justin Hunter to the injury report with a groin injury. He is listed as questionable on the final report along with Marcell Dareus who is expected to play. Rex Ryan said that Ryan Groy will start at center but would not say who would start at the other positions up for grabs. Corbin Bryant has been ruled out with his shoulder injury. Injury Page.

Harvin To Start: Offensive Coordinator Anthony Lynn said he expects Percy Harvin to start on Sunday but will still be on a pitch count as he rounds back into football shape. Lynn also said that Jordan Mills, Cyrus Kouandjio, and Seantrel Henderson to all see time at right tackle. Rex Ryan also said that Ronald Darby has had an excellent week at practice so it sounds like he received the message and will likely remain the starter for now. Marcell Dareus did a lot in practice today even though he was officially listed as limited. It sounds very likely he will play on Sunday. Injury Page.

Bryant Still Out: Corbin Bryant remained sidelined for a second straight day with his shoulder injury increasing the likelihood he will miss his second straight game. Cyrus Kouandjio and Cardale Jones were not on the field as well. Kouandjio was becoming a United States citizen today so was given the day off. Marcell Dareus and Brandon Tate were on the field again. Tate took reps with the return team which is a good sign he is ready to return from his concussion. Still no Sammy Watkins on the field as expected. Joe Buscaglia of WKBW tweeted that Ronald Darby was taking the first team reps for a second straight day so maybe he is holding on to his starting job afterall. Injury Page.

Game Preview: The Bills are fresh off the bye and getting healthier as they head to Cincinnati to face the struggling Bengals in the first of many must win games coming up. This will be a tough road matchup for the Bills no matter how disappointing the season has been for Cincinnati so far. Game Preview.

Robey-Coleman Demoted: Nickell Robey-Coleman confirmed to the media yesterday that he has been demmoted and that rookie Kevon Seymour will take over his starting nickel corner spot. This is one of many potential changes being considered by Rex Ryan. He is unhappy with the play of the secondary as they have given up 7 pass plays of 50+ yards this season. He is looking to get taller bodies in the secondary with players like Seymour and Corey White who may supplant Ronald Darby for a starting spot as well. At center, Tyrod Taylor said he's taking most of his snaps from Ryan Groy so it appears he will get the first shot at replacing Eric Wood. Depth Chart.

Bills Healthy: Rex Ryan said the team is as healthy as they have been all season. Everyone participated in practice today with the exception of Corbin Bryant. Practicing on a limited basis were Marcell Dareus, Jerry Hughes, Robert Woods, Walter Powell, and Brandon Tate. On the secondary, Ryan admitted nobody fears throwing vertically against them and he will give everyone an opportunity to take over starting jobs there. Kevon Seymour will get some snaps in the nickel as Corey White continues to get first team reps on the outside in place of Ronald Darby. He also plans on getting newly signed James Ihedigbo involved somewhere since he has a proven track record. On the offensive line they have to decide who will play center and Seantrel Henderson will indeed work in some at right tackle. Injury Page.

Tuesday November 15, 2016

Safety Swap: The Bills continue to try to upgrade their struggling secondary. For the second time in three weeks they have added a safety. The team has signed James Ihedigbo and released long time safety Duke Williams. Ihedigbo is an eight year veteran who made 8 starts for the Lions last year. He also played under Rex Ryan with the Jets in 2009 and 2010. He should also help on special teams. Williams was a fourth round draft pick of the Bills and this was his fourth year with the team. Front Office Page.

Practice Squad Addition: The Bills filled the open spot on the practice squad created when they elevated Marcus Roberson to the active roster. The team added a center to that unit to help in case they need another body to fill the void left with the injury to Eric Wood. Dalton Freeman comes over with 16 games experience in the league with the Jets in 2014. He also was with Houston over the summer. Depth Chart.

Monday November 14, 2016

Wood To IR: The Bills have placed Eric Wood on injured reserve effectively ending his season. They have bolstered their struggling secondary by re-activating Marcus Roberson from the practice squad.

Battle At CB: Rex Ryan said that Ronald Darby was benched last Monday night because he was ill but it seems like it was more than that. After doing some self scouting over the bye week, Ryan has opened up some positions for competition including Darby's corner spot. Corey White took first team reps there today in practice and he told the media that he was told it's an open competition. There seems to be a wide open battle for Aaron Williams' safety spot as well.

Watkins Not Ready Rex Ryan addressed the media before the team held a light practice today. Sammy Watkins is not ready to practice just yet and was not on the field today. He told the coach he feels fantastic but until the medical people are on board with him practicing he'll be back out there. Marcell Dareus is progressing nicely while fellow tackle Corbin Bryant is getting better as well. He says they will have a better idea about Dareus' availability on Wednesday. Brandon Tate remains in concussion protocol. The team will see who earns the starting center job between Ryan Groy and Patrick Lewis now that Eric Wood is out long term. The coach said there will be competition at other positions as well notably the secondary and the offensive line praising the play of Seantrel Henderson which leads to speculation that Jordan Mills may be headed to the bench. The coach hopes to get more reps out of Percy Harvin this week. Injury Page.

Bills Get Back To Work: The bye week is now over and the Bills hit the practice field today for the first time since their loss to Seattle on Monday night. Rex Ryan gave the team the whole bye week off after they arrived back in town in the wee hours of the morning on Tuesday. All eyes will be looking to see if Sammy Watkins returns to practice. He was eligible to begin practicing with the team on Friday. He is eligible to return to game action next Sunday against Jacksonville.
