Bills Lose In New England
Sunday December 24, 2017
Gameday Grades: The Bills defense was fired up and played tough until they wilted in the end thanks to a no touchdown performance by the offense. Gameday Grades.
Bills Blitz: In a game of controversial calls the Patriots waited the Bills out and took control of the game in the 2nd half enroute to a 37-16 win in a game that was much closer than the final score indicates. The loss means the Bills need to beat the Dolphins next week and have Tennesee and the Chargers lose or a Baltimore loss to end the playoff drought. The Bills started strong and took a 10-3 lead when Jordan Poyer picked off Tom Brady and returned it for a touchdown. The Bills thought they recaptured the lead just before halftime when Kelvin Benjamin made a nice catch in the corner of the end zone but after a very lengthy review, the league office called it incomplete while everyone else thought it was a good catch. The Bills took a 16-13 lead early in the fourth quarter as the offense couldn't turn field goals into touchdowns. The Patriots took over from there scoring 24 unanswered points getting touchdowns from Rob Gronkowski, Mike Gillislee, and two late scores from Dion Lewis They were helped along the way with a couple of pass interference penalties to take control of the game. Bills Blitz.
Injury Update: Travaris Cadet suffered a bad ankle injury whene he got his leg twisted on a run. He was quickly carted to the locker room and ruled out. Shareece Wright got shaken up late in the game but walked off and seemed ok. Injury Page.
Gameday Inactives: The Bills had five players listed as questionable for the game and of that group John Miller and E.J. Gaines are inactive. Gaines injured his knee last week and did practice some this week and worked out his knee on the field in the morning but wasn't ready to go. Miller likely would have been scratched anyway as he has not been active most of the season. Kelvin Benjamin, Kyle Williams, and Nick O'Leary are all active after being listed as questionable. Andre Holmes was ruled out on Friday with his neck injury. The healthy scratches are Breon Borders, Logan Thomas, Brandon Reilly, and Conor McDermott. With Holmes sidelined it was thought training camp favorite Brandon Reilly would be active for the first time this year but the club decided to go with three running backs instead.
Gameday Weather: The Christmas Eve weather in New England couldn't be better for football. It will be partly sunny with a high temperature of 40°. Winds will be light out of the NNE at 6mph. There is a chance at snow after the game.

Injury Update: The Bills got several players back to the practice field today on a limited basis. Kelvin Benjamin, E.J. Gaines, Nick O’Leary, Lorenzo Alexander, and Kyle Williams all were on the field in some form. Alexander got a rest day yesterday while Williams and O'Leary have been battling nagging injuries that aren't keeping them out of the lineup. Williams officially didn't practice today but did some work. Gaines being back on the field is a positive sign as it appears his knee injury isn't too serious. Benjamin will have his reps limited all week in hopes they can get something out of him on Sunday. Andre Holmes did not practice. Injury Page.
Game Preview: The Bills hit the final two games of the season still very much alive for the playoff race. The bad news is that they are playing in their house of horrors this week up in New England. The good news is they can lose this game and still have a decent shot at making the playoffs since next week's game against Miami is more important in the playoff race. Complete Preview.

McDermott Presser: Sean McDermott addressed the media before today's media day practice. E.J. Gaines, Kyle Benjamin, Andre Holmes, Nick O'Leary and Kyle Williams will not practice today. Kelvin continues to work through his knee as he is toughing it out. Holmes is still battling a sore neck, Williams has an ongoing groin issue and O'Leary has a back issue. He called Gaines day to day with a knee injury so it doesn't appear overly serious. Colt Anderson is back practicing as he is eligible to come off of injured reserve which he was on for a broken forearm. He called Tre'Davious White a legitimate candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He congratulated the players that made the Pro Bowl. Injury Page.

Three Bills Make Pro Bowl: The Bills have three players in the Pro Bowl as the rosters were announced tonight. Micah Hyde, LeSean McCoy, and Richie Incognito are the three representatives from the Bills on the squad. Hyde was the leading vote getter for the AFC at safety. The Bills also have four alternates in case players drop out or are on a Super Bowl team. Eric Wood is a first alternate. Kyle Williams is a second alternate. Mike Tolbert and Charles Clay are third alternates. Tolbert is an alternate at fullback even though he didn't play there this year.
Bogyo Column: Tony Bogyo breaks down the win over Miami and how the Bills are still alive for a playoff berth as we head into Christmas week. They need to be more consistent to win a game against a better team. If they are, then who knows we may get a Christmas miracle. Complete Story.

McDermott Presser: Sean McDermott addressed the media on victory Monday. As expected he said E.J. Gaines is still under evaluation and they will know more in a couple of days. He says he spends very little time going over playoff possibilities but he's excited and it's fun that they are in that position for the players and the fans. They know enough to have the information they need to make the decisions they have to make during the game. The important thing is to remain focused on themselves and getting better as a team. Nathan Peterman has officially cleared concussion protocol and practice this week again and be cleared to play. He thought the performance by both the offense and defense in the red zone was important. He said he meant what he said about owning the drought and wants to end it for the fans. On Kelvin Benjamin he said the good thing is he had no setbacks yesterday like he did last week against Indianapolis but they should get a better feeling on where he is at as the week progresses. He sees the passion of the fanbase and the alumni that are still here. He wants to earn the right to win for them so they have to keep working hard. Every week you have to bring your A game it's a test how long a group of people in a building can hang together during the highs and lows of the season. They continue to build and grow and these are valuable experience for the draft picks. It's all good stuff. On Kyle Williams, they all feel that there is nothing more they want then getting him the experience of playing in the playoffs. He was not happy with the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and said there is no time to dwell on what happened two weeks ago with Rob Gronkowski. The player driven leadership is so important to the coach led by Williams and Eric Wood. To have those caliber of people in the locker room to help communicate his message is huge. On Preston Brown being on the hands team, they have a lot of confidence in him and they know he wants that play back. He was proud of Tre'Davious White for going down this time after his second game clinching interception. Last time he didn't go down and returned it. Injury Page.
