Bills Fall Just Short In Carolina

Sunday September 17, 2017

Gameday Grades: You can guess where these grades went. All Fs on offense and mostly As on defense. Gameday Grades.

Bills Blitz: In a game where no touchdowns were scored it was exciting in the end but the Bills fell fingertips short in a 9-3 loss to the Panthers. The Bills defense had a beautiful goal line stand to force the Panthers to kick a field goal with 2:35 left. The Bills drove down the field for the best drive of the day when on 4th and 11 Tyrod Taylor had Zay Jones wide open for a game winning touchdown but the high throw went off his hands at the four yard line and that was the ballgame. The Bills defense played a great game with the offense struggling mightily throughout the game. The Bills sacked Cam Newton six times but couldn't take the ball away which was needed to help the pitiful offense. Bills Blitz.

Injury Update: The Bills suffered several injuries but only one player didn't return. Cordy Glenn didn't return to the game after having problems once again with his ankle and he didn't come out at the start of the second half. LeSean McCoy who left after re-injuring his wrist that he hurt in the opener but didn't miss a play. Marcell Dareus injured his right ankle on the opening series and missed most of the first half before returning late in the second quarter and he seemed limited the rest of the way. E.J. Gaines was shaken up just before halftime and left the game momentarily before returning. Kyle Williams got poked in the eye and left for a play before returning. Andre Holmes suffered a shoulder stinger while covering a punt but he came back in the game. Injury Page.

Inactives: Jerel Worthy is the lone inactive because of an injury as he remains in concussion protocol and was ruled out on Friday. The other inactives are: Brandon Tate, Jelani Jenkins, Vlad Ducasse, Conor McDermott, Khari Lee, and Joe Banyard. Tate being inactive is a surprise leaving Kaelin Clay active instead of him, he likely will handle at least punt return duties. We possibly will see Taiwan Jones returning kicks.

Gameday Weather: It will be a hot and humid day in Charlotte today for the Panthers home opener against the Bills as Hurricane Jose churns off the coast. It will be partly sunny and humid for today's game with a kickoff temperature in the low to mid 80s but the feels like temperatures thanks to the humiditiy will be in the low 90s. The winds will be light out of the NNE at 7mph.

McDermott Presser: LeSean McCoy is being given a day off to rest but Sean McDermott added he has soreness of the groin as well. He did say he's not worried about it and he is very confident he will be able to handle a full workload on Sunday. He said the same about Leonard Johnson who was limited yesterday with a quad injury. He is officially listed as questionable but if there is an issue they will likely have to active Greg Mabin from the practice squad by tomorrow. Jerel Worthy has been ruled out again this week with his concussion. The coach doesn't want the team to win the game for him that would be the wrong approach. The coach said he's confident in these guys and they have an 'it' factor. While the Bills only have two players on the injury report the Panthers have nobody on there report which is highly unusual. Game Preview: The Bills head down to Carolina for their first road game of the year as Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott return home. This opponent will be a much tougher one than the Jets were on opening day as the Bills strive to go 2-0 in the new era. Game Preview.

Mabin Back: The Bills now only have four corners on the depth chart so they made a move to bolster that unit on the practice squad by bringing Greg Mabin back to that unit two days after he was released. To make room they released TE MyCole Pruitt from that unit.

McCoy Fine: LeSean McCoy said his wrist is a bit swollen but he will be fine for Sunday's game. He was full go in practice today. The only one not practicing at all was Jerel Worthy who remains in concussion protocol. Tanner Vallejo was back on the field after missing time with a knee injury. E.J. Gaines was limited but will be able to go on Sunday. Charles Clay and Mike Tolbert were new additions to the report. Injury Page.

McDermott Presser: Today is media day and Sean McDermott held his morning press conference before the start of practice. He said E.J. Gaines will practice today and although he will be a little bit limited today they expect him to play on Sunday. The Panthers will be a huge challenge as they are a team that has been together for 7 years. They are a very talented football team, talented and fast defense. He is aware of their strengths and weaknesses because of his history but the players will be the ones on the field making plays and they have a lot of work to do. It is about them growing as a football team. We will try every week as coaches to put our players in position to be successful. It is about how they continue to evolve as a football team and creating their identity. They need to close the gap in areas where they need to from last week. They will always rotate players regardless of the weather but they are preparing for hot, muggy weather with their hydration process. They take what defenses give them and that is why they didn't throw downfield so much last week. There are a lot of different ways to win football games and they felt they got into a rythym last week. There are areas they need to improve on and they have to play smart. When it comes to giving them a best chance to win a football gam he doesn't factor salaries into it. He knows people are expected to see Marcell Dareus on the field more but he believes in rotating guys up front to keep them fresh and that gives them a better chance to win. He though Dareus did a heck of a job in doing what he needed to do to help them win last week. They have a plan on how to handle his ongoing hip issue but it didn't effect his playing time on Sunday. He said Cam Newton was an MVP in this league for a reason and he felt he looked like his old self in their week one win over San Francisco. On the signing of Jelani Jenkins he has played outside mostly and they will start him off there. They will acclimate him to their system first so he can play fast when he gets on the field. He his athletic and they like the system he came from in college. He can run and diagnose while being a very instinctive player. He did admit the emotions may be a bit stronger going back to Carolina earlier in the season than it would have been if later in the season.

Roster Moves: The Bills made it a roster move today by adding LB Jelani Jenkins and releasing CB Greg Mabin. The release of Mabin may be mean that the team feels E.J. Gaines will be ok for Sunday's game after leaving the opener with a shoulder contusion. Jenkins was a 4th round draft pick of the Dolphins and a starter there in 2014 and 2015 and made 8 starts in Miami in 2016 before signing with the Raiders as a free agent. He got an injury settlement after being placed on injured reserve 10 days ago. He adds much needed experience to the linebacker corps but leaves them with just four corners on the roster. Mabin was the last of the undrafted free agents still on the roster. The team also added Malachi Dupre to the practice squad and released Daikiel Shorts in a swamp of wide receivers. The Bills also reached an injury settlement with T.J. Yates and he has now been released off of injured reserve. Front Office Page. Depth Chart.

Bogyo Column: It's a new season that means our columnist Tony Bogyo returns with his weekly look at every Bills game. Tony talks about his feelings on the rebuilding project at One Bills Drive and what fans should be rooting for. Complete Story.

McDermott Presser: Sean McDermott held his Monday press conference the day after the Bills won his first game as a head coach. He opened his presser talking about the solemn day 9-11 is. He said there is a lot to learn from yesterday's game they played extremely hard as a team. They need to get better from what didn't work and they need to replicate what they did well. He acknowledged that Carolina is the next opponent and they are a talented football game but wouldn't say it's a bit bigger for him. He knows it's a huge challenge since especially with it being their home opener. He learned a lot from Coach Rivera and others in Carolina. He called it a great organization that has won a ton of games and does things the right way. He has a lot of respect for what they do and how they do things. He wouldn't say it's an advantage that he knows how they do things. They have to put in their time in getting ready for the game. There were missed opportunities in the first half and should have scored more points they also had a costly penalty on special teams. He wasn't happy with the four minute offense as they didn't finish the game like he wanted to. There are a long list of things that they can do better. On the positive side, there was some really good fundamentals yesterday and that tackled well as long as blocked well. He loved how Ramon Humber played especially with his history of not starting many games over his long career. He was around the football a lot yesterday and made plays. On the injury front, he said there was some bumps and bruises but the only real injury was to E.J. Gaines and it looks to be just a contusion to his shoulder at this point. He said it feels good to be 1-0. On Marcell Dareus he said he thinks he played a good game opening things up for others to make plays. There system calls for fresh bodies up front and a healthy rotation that is why Dareus didn't have as many snaps as he has had in the past. He liked the combination of LeSean McCoy and Mike Tolbert and he was happy with the way they both played. On Cordy Glenn the important part is he came out of the game healthy but they wanted to ease him back into it so Dion Dawkins saw reps at left tackle. Injury Page.
