Bills Fire Dennison Replace Him With Daboll

Sunday January 14, 2018

Bills Hire OC: The Bills didn't waste too much time finding a new offensive coordinator. They were able to pry Brian Daboll from the National Champion Alabama squad where he served as their offensive coordinator. Daboll has ties Western New York as he went to High School at St. Francis and played college ball at the University of Rochester. Daboll has known Sean McDermott since their days together at William and Mary where McDermott was a player and Daboll was a graduate assistant. Before going to Alabama this year he was with the Patriots for 10 years serving a variety of roles under Bill Belichick including being the TE coach on last year's Super Bowl winning team. He was also an offensive coordinator for the Browns, Dolphins, and Chiefs. He also served as a QB coach for the Jets. Sean McDermott released a statement that read "we are excited to hire Brian as our offensive coordinator and welcome him back to Western New York. I know how much this area means to him. He is a good coach and a good teacher and has been part of winning programs in the NFL and college."

Jones Played Hurt: Part of the reason why Zay Jones struggled this season may have been a torn labrum he played with. His Father, former pro player Robert Jones, told Robert Quinn of the Bills Wire podcast that his son will have surgery on Tuesday. It is the 2nd torn labrum Jones has had. Injury Page.

Goat Tally: As we do every year we tally up all the goats we give out during each Bills Blitz on the season. Despite leading the Bills to the playoffs Sean McDermott and Tyrod Taylor led the way with five goats. Goat Tally.

Dennison Fired: The Bills have announced that they have parted ways with offensive coordinator Rick Dennison. He was the 12th offensive coordinator since 2000 for the Bills they will also have their fifth offensive coordinator in as many seasons in 2018. Sean McDermott said on Tuesday that they will methodically evaluate the entire staff but did recognize that time would be a factor in making a change since several teams are out there looking for coaches. The search will be on for a new head of the offense immediately. Front Office Page.

Bills Lose Gaine: The Bills lost one of their stars in the front office as VP of Player Personnel Brian Gaine is going back to Houston to become the GM of the Texans. Ian Rapoport is reporting that they are finalizing details tonight. This will leave a hole in Branon Beane's administration.

Bills Sign Two: The number of reserve/future contract signings is up to 12 as the Bills signed two more that were on the practice squad late in the season. Added to the offseason roster was LB Xavier Woodson-Luster who was the only player on the practice squad at the end of the season not added to the futures list earlier in the week. The second player added was S L.J. McCray who was released from the practice squad to make room for RB Aaron Green before wildcard week. Front Office Page.

Beane On WGR: After the end of the season press conference Brandon Beane appeared on the John Murphy Show on WGR and MSG. He said you know what the fanbase is but you really don't. He got chills when he saw those videos from the fans and from the locker room. It was one of the most fun days in his life when they clinched the playoff drought. He thought Sean McDermott handled adversity very well with the three game skid, the QB debate, and the trades that were made before and during the season. He told the team that he thought Sean did a great job keeping the team focused and stable throughout the year. He thought Sean handled the QB situation as well as he could have. Nobody is perfect and the coach owned up to that maybe they shouldn't have did that and that helped keep the team focused each day and each practice. The evalution process will begin with what they did on both sides of the ball. What did they do well on offense? What didn't they? Not punching the ball in while in the red zone hurt them throughout the year. On Defense, they would play great at times but then give up running yards in droves. What personnel issues were there amd what systematically could they do better? He applauded these players and this coaching staff on what they did this year but next year is a different season and they need to re-focus. They take their motives out of the equation and make moves on just what will help the Buffalo Bills. Beane said it was great getting the young guys some experience and thought some of the pickups really came through for them like E.J. Gaines since the team went 8-3 when he played.

End Of Season Presser Intro: GM Brandon Beane and HC Sean McDermott addressed the media in their end of season press conference this afternoon. McDermott started the press conference and praised the fans the way they showed up all season and in Jacksonville. He called it a team effort from the start and wanted to show his appreciation for Terry and Kim and then turned it over to Beane who re-iterated the outpouring and passion of the fans. It's emotional to see what it means to the fans and everyone saw that especially when they showed up at the airport in zero degree weather. Beane said he thought Shawn and his staff did a heck of a job to handle the curve balls that were thrown at them with trades and the handling of the three game losing streak. Beane said they are just at the beginning of the evaluation process of the season as he turned it over to questions. The GM said despite making the playoffs they have a long way to do and have to get better. Their plan does not change the only adjustment is wear they are drafting. It is great to be drafting at 21 because they made the playoffs.

GM, Coach on Players: Beane said they are not satisified with the whole offense and it is not just Tyrod Taylor. They know they have to get better and they are far from a finished project and the work will get started after this press conference. Beane said Tyrod has a lot of ability but he will tell you he has weaknesses to work on. The great thing about him is you can never question his work ethic. He gives himself the best chance to succeed by the work he does off of it. McDermott was asked if the media jumped the gun saying they were moving on from Tyrod when he was benched. He said they felt that was the right decision at that time for the football team. On Kyle Williams, Beane said who doesn't love Kyle Williams and he is a big time leader. He was a big part of the leadership that they would definitely want back but they will give him time to sit back and figure things out but they would love to have Kyle back. They are excited to get Kelvin Benjamin healthy and see him ready to go next year. Cordy Glenn had surgery and he is getting himself healthy to participate in the offseason workouts.

Coach On Staff: The coach would not get into speculation about coaches and players futures with the team when he was asked about Rick Dennison returning. McDermott said they will take a hard look at everything to make sure they are doing the right thing as he would not commit to any of his coaches for next year at this point. They will be responsible and make smart decisions even though there is a time element with coaches moving around in the league.

Beane On Incognito Incident:They spoke to Richie Incognito about the on the field incident and they are following protocol on the matter. They are also doing their own investigation and are still gathering the facts. They understand his side of the story but won't comment on it. They was definitely an exchange of words but there is a misunderstanding on what was said. McDermott calls the whole situation unfortunate.

More Presser Snippets: Beane said there is no substitute for playing time in real games and postseason games and the young players getting in the games is huge. He thought Shawn and his staff got the team to gel quicker than he tought they would. They have to continue to get the guys that fit the culture they are trying to build for the future success of the club. In a lot of areas McDermott said they are on schedule and in others they have a lot of work to do. There is a whole other level to get to and they have to sustain the success they have had. Playing in the playoffs is a learning process the coach said. Beane confirmed that they gave the Texans permission to talk to Brain Gaine about their GM position.

Free Agency and The Draft: Beane admitted to having a lot of draft capital but they still have a long way to go in the scouting process for the draft but they will go where they need to go to get the right players for this football team. Free agency comes down to responsible spending sometimes guys price themselves out and sometimes they become bargains. They will try to fill as many holes as they can before they get to the draft. The key is to spend wisely you have to set where you think a guy belongs and not get caught in chase mode on an individual. McDermott said he and Beane communicate on a lot of things and are on the same page when it comes to the draft. If they draft a quarterback every situation is different regarding to playing right away or not. Beane said his main job as GM is to find a franchise quarterback whether it's in the draft or free agency.

Gaine Interview Today: John McCain of the Houston Chronicle reports that Bills vice president of player personnel Brian Gaine will interview today for the general manager vacancy the Texans have. Gaine came to the Bills last year from Houston where he was the Director of player personnel. He is considered a likely favorite to get the job which would be a blow to the Bills administration.

Bogyo Column: Tony Bogyo like most Bllis fans has mixed emotions following the 10-3 loss to the Jaguars in the Wildcard game. While he is bummed the season ended he sees reason for optimism going forward for this organization. Complete Story.

Monday January 8 2018

Locker Cleanout Day: Today was locker cleanout day and not much of note came out of it. Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane will address the media at a press conference tomorrow at 1pm that is where news may be generated. Lorenzo Alexander said at the 35 years old he has a lot left in the tank and hopes the Bills feel the same way. Eric Wood and Dion Dawkins defended Richie Incognito who was accused of saying racial slurs during the Wildcard game by a Jaguars Defensive Linemen. Incognito did not talk to the media. Kyle Williams said once again that he will take his time to make the decision on his future. Kelvin Benjamin said he will have surgery later this week to trim his torn meniscus and that is a 4-6 week recovery period. He said he will be ready for OTAs and said he likes playing in Buffalo. Leonard Johnson and Preston Brown are both impending free agents that say they would love to be back in Buffalo next season.

Nine Signed: The Bills have signed 9 of their 10 practice squad players to reserve/future contracts. RB Aaron Green, WR Quan Bray, TE Jason Croom, OT De'Ondre Wesley, OT Josh James, C Adam Redmond, DT Marquavius Lewis, S Dean Marlowe and P Cory Carter. On January 1st they signed WR Rod Streater to a reserve/futures contract. The only practice squad player not signed was LB Xavier Woodson-Luster.

Draft Position: Now that the season is over for the Bills it's time to start looking at the draft. Based on how the Wildcard round shook out the Bills will pick 21st and 22nd in the first round of the draft. The 21st pick is their own while the 22nd is the Chiefs pick. They can use both those picks plus their two second round picks to move up to get their quarterback. Going by the draft value chart the two first round picks should allow the Bills to move up to the 6th or 7th position. Of course in reality when you are trying to get a franchise quarterback you are probably going to have to overpay to get up and get one. It's a long way to the draft but we will be here through all the speculation that is to come.

Williams Not Ready To Decide: Kyle Williams said after the game that he is excited about the direction of the team under Sean McDermott and the coach came through with everything he said he would do when he coaxed Williams back this year. The veteran say he has a lot of time to decide what his future holds and it will be a joint decision between him, his family, and the organization.

Incredible Fans: Bills Mafia is a resilient bunch that never ceases to amaze. There was a sizable crowd in frigid temperatures once again at the airport to greet the team. This time after a loss.
