Bills Keep Playoff Hopes Alive With Monumental Win

Gameday Grades: A fantastic effort by the defense and special teams along with the roar of the crowd allowed the Bills to overcome another terrible performance by the offense. The result was a satisfying 21-13 win thanks to some spirited play by two of three units. Gameday Grades.

Bills Blitz: Marcus Thigpen returned a punt 75 yards for the Bills only touchdown and Mario Williams clinched a great defensive effort with a strip sack that resulted in a safety to give the Bills a huge 21-13 victory over one of the best teams in the league in the Green Bay Packers. It is the first time since 1971 that the Bills had a punt return TD and a safety. The win clinches at least a .500 season for the Bills for the first time since 2004. League MVP favorite Aaron Rodgers became the second straight future hall of famer to have one of the worst games of his career against the vaunted Bills defense. He was just 17 of 42 for 185 yards and for the first time in his career was held without a touchdown pass while throwing two interceptions. Bacarri Rambo of all people had both picks when he came in the game for the injured Duke Williams. The Bills offense played awful and every drive unraveled as they got close but Dan Carpenter was money as usual hitting all four field goal attempts. Kyle Orton completed just 14 of 27 passes for 158 yards and an interception as they used a short passing attack. Fred Jackson had 71 yards on 20 carries. Bills Blitz.

Duke Hurt In Game: Duke Williams left the game in the third quarter with concussion like symptoms. Stephon Gilmore went down with an apparent left shoulder injury on the 2nd play of the game but came back out for the second series. Injury Page.

Gameday Inactives: Chris Gragg and Da'Norris Searcy were ruled out on Friday. Jairus Wynn was listed as questionable after missing a month with a knee injury. He is also inactive. The healty scratches are newly signed Deonte Thompson, Cyrus Kouandjio, Randell Johnson, and Frank Summers.

Nice Day For Home Finale: Can't complain about the weather for a December home finale in Orchard Park. The gametime temperature wil be 37° and the game will be played under cloudy skies but no precipitation is expected. The wind shouldn't be too much of a factor either as it will be out of the west at 11mph.

Searcy Ruled Out: Despite practicing on a limited basis again on Friday, Da'Norris Searcy has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Packers at soldout Ralph Wilson Stadium. Duke Williams will start in his place. Chris Gragg has also been ruled out after once again missing the week of practice with his knee injury. Jairus Wynn is listed as questionable after he returned to practice this week, he has been out a month with a knee injury. Stephan Charles and Dan Carpenter are both probable for the game. Injury Page.

Mario Returns: Mario Williams and Chris Hairston returned to practice on Thursday after sitting Wednesday with illnesses. Chris Gragg was the only player not on the field Thursday as he remains out with his knee injury. Jairus Wynn and Da'Norris Searcy were limited again along with Stefan Charles who has a quad injury. Dan Carpenter was limited again with his groin injury but he should kick on Sunday. Injury Page.

Packers Preview: For a second straight week the Bills take on a future hall of famer at the most important position. Aaron Rodgers tries to do what no other Packer QB has done, beat the Bills in Buffalo. The Bills need the win to keep their flickering playoff hopes alive so they will be playing in desperation mode in front of the home crowd for the final time this year. Complete Preview.

Wednesday December 10, 2014

Mario, Hairston Sick: Mario Williams and Chris Hairston missed practice today with illnesses. Chris Gragg was the only other player not practicing as he remains out with his knee injury. Jairus Wynn was back on the field on a limited basis for the first time since injuring his knee against Kansas City. Da'Norris Searcy was on the field doing some stretching but officially did not practice after injuring his hamstring during Sunday's loss to Denver. Stefan Charles was limited with a quad injury. Mike Williams cleared waivers and has been placed on the team's injured reserve list. He will be released once he is recovered from his calf injury so they won't need to reach an injury settlement with him or be on the hook for next year's salary. Injury Page.

Jackson Honored: Fred Jackson has been named the Bills Walter Payton Man of the Year. The award goes for his community efforts. Kyle Williams was named to USA Football All Fundamentals Team. That honor goes to 26 players who exhibit exemplary football techniques for young players to emulate.

Orton To Start: Doug Marrone confirmed yesterday that Kyle Orton will indeed remain the starting quarterback for this week's game against the Packers. He stayed with the line that he gives them the best chance to win. The other interesting tidbit from Monday's press conference was that the coach admitted he was unaware that Jerry Hughes was benched. He had Hughes pulled after the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty but expected him to go back in the game. Pepper Johnson made the call to keep him on the sidelines and didn't let the head coach know the change in the rotation like he is suppose to. The players continued to be upset by the officiating in the loss including the fist pump between the two officials.

Another Frustrating Loss: Tony Bogyo breaks down the latest loss to the Broncos. It was a very frustrating defeat that almost left our columnist speechless. Complete Story.

Monday December 8, 2014

Bills Sign WR; Mike Williams Waived/Injured: The Bills have added Mike Williams to the reserved/injured list, if he clears waivers he will go to the Bills injured reserve list. The team will likely look to reach an injury settlement at that point. The Bills have signed WR Deonte Thompson off of the Ravens practice squad. He played in six games for Baltimore with five catches in 2012 and had 10 catches in 7 games in 2013. He has been on and off their roster and practice squad a couple of times this year.
